Abstract

The rapid development of data and technology in science encourages the collaboration of various disciplines to produce new branches of science, one of which is Bioinformatics, which studies molecular biology data stored in digital databases. The process of studying digital data requires special skills, such as analytical thinking skills and digital literacy. Efforts are needed to improve these two skills, one of which is by applying innovative teaching materials in project-based learning (PjBL). This study aims to determine the effect of the application of ARMOD E-Module teaching materials in PjBL on these two skills. Research with quasi-experimental methods and pretest-posttest control group design was conducted on students of the UNJ biology education study programme. The results showed that the application of ARMOD E-Module in PjBL can increase the average post-test in the aspects of segmentation ability, ability to connect system functions, ability to compare, ability to evaluate which are aspects of analytical thinking. The average post-test increases also occurred in the aspects of information and data literacy, communication and collaboration, digital content creation, security, and problem solving which are all aspects of digital literacy. The results of the one-way MANOVA test between the experimental class and the control class were 0.026, indicating a significant difference. The significant difference is thought to be due to the innovative features of teaching materials used in learning bioinformatics.

Abstract

Climate change disasters as a result of environmental degradation have become a threat to every component of the Earth's environment. These disasters are strongly suspected to be caused by harmful behaviors toward the environment, including among student groups. Therefore, efforts are needed to promote and empower pro-environmental behavior (PEB) in society. The purpose of this study is to provide information and confirm pro-environmental behavior (PEB) based on antecedent factors of environmental instructional leadership (EIL) and environmental personality traits (EPT), mediated by the New Environmental Paradigm (NEP). A quantitative research method with a causal study approach was carried out involving 47 Environmental Health students who selected using multistage random sampling. Four research instruments were used, consisting of statements adapted from previous research. Data analysis techniques employed were path analysis. The results confirmed that EIL had a direct effect on NEP and PEB, but the effect was not significant. Meanwhile, EPT had a very significant direct effect on NEP and PEB. The NEP variable was found to be a good mediator in bridging the influence of EIL and EPT on PEB. If pro-environmental behavior among students is to improve and its variability minimized, these antecedent factors can be empowered through environmental education and learning strategies, prioritizing NEP based on empirical findings.

Abstract

Understanding scientific culture (USC) and developing problem-solving skills (PSS) are important elements in facing complex global challenges in the digital era. This study examines the effects of creativity (CRV), communication (CMN), and digital literacy (DGL) on USC and PSS in biology students at Universitas Negeri Makassar, Universitas PGRI Sumatera Barat, and Universitas Pendidikan Mandalika in Indonesia. A cross-sectional quantitative survey approach was used with a structured online questionnaire, and data were analyzed using the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) method. The results showed that CRV had a significant direct effect on USC and PSS. CMN also had an effect on USC. However, the direct effect of CMN on PSS was not significant, indicating that its role in improving problem-solving skills was mediated by USC. In contrast, DGL showed a weaker direct effect on PSS and USC, indicating a less dominant role than creativity and communication. These findings emphasize the importance of a synergistic educational approach that integrates CRV, CMN, and DGL to support USC and PSS. Emphasis on creativity as a transformative tool and communication as a collaborative medium in scientific contexts is highly recommended, while DGL needs to be further developed to effectively complement these competencies. Future research needs to explore these relationships in different contexts to refine educational strategies and address evolving challenges.
