Abstract

Conceptual understanding in biology is crucial for addressing global and complex issues. However, students often struggle to grasp biological concepts, thus requiring the support of interactive and engaging learning media. This study aims to develop and evaluate a gamification-based learning approach using PowerPoint media to enhance conceptual understanding of biodiversity, specifically the Felidae family. The research method used in this study is Educational Design Research (EDR) with the Hannafin and Peck (1988) model. Hannafin and Peck model is structured around three distinct phases i.e. needs assessment, design, and development/implementation. Each phase includes evaluation and revision. Data analysis includes assumption tests such as normality and homogeneity tests, as well as effectiveness tests including paired sample T-tests and normalized gain analysis. The subjects of this research are 10th-grade students and Biology teachers at SMAN X Jakarta Timur. The gamification-based PowerPoint learning media (FaunaPlay) is highly feasible to be used as a learning tool and is effective in enhancing the conceptual understanding of 10th grade high school students on the topic of biodiversity, specifically the Felidae family. This study recommends implementing the gamification-based learning media (FaunaPlay) in classroom instruction to enhance conceptual understanding of biodiversity (Felidae). The media can be utilized by teachers as a practical tool during teaching and learning activities. Furthermore, it provides a valuable reference for researchers to develop similar gamified learning media aimed at improving educational quality.

Abstract

This research stems from the low utilization of local potential-based biology learning resources in schools, despite their importance in deepening biological understanding, shaping student character, and fostering environmental awareness, amid growing challenges like resource exploitation, land use change, and climate change. This study aims to assess how effective biology learning resources based on local potential affect student attitudes and learning outcomes by conducting a systematic literature review and meta-analysis using the PRISMA method on articles published between 2013 and 2024. The main data source came from Google Scholar, focusing on articles discussing the utilization of local potential as a learning resource. The uniqueness of this method lies in the categorization of articles based on dependent variables, namely student attitudes and learning outcomes. The data were analyzed descriptively for attitude variables and quantitatively using Cohen's d formula to measure the effect size on learning outcomes for articles with adequate data. The results of the analysis showed that local potential-based learning significantly impacted positively on students' attitudinal changes (including environmental awareness and conservation) and improved cognitive learning outcomes, as seen from high N-gain and effect size values. These findings support the application of contextual and constructivist approaches that are in line with the Merdeka Curriculum, which emphasizes the importance of strengthening character and sustainability. In conclusion, learning resources based on local potential can improve learning quality and shape students with character and environmental awareness, while strengthening empirical evidence on contextual biology education and learning based on local wisdom.

Abstract

Climate change has long been an important global issue caused by large-scale environmental changes. In the context of green spatial planning, arboretums are important elements that contribute to improving the quality of urban environments and maintaining the balance of local ecosystems. This study aims to explore the flora diversity of the Samudra University Arboretum and analyze soil macronutrient content to assess the relationship between soil fertility levels and the vegetation growing on it. These findings are expected to be utilized as contextual learning media in biology education on environment, ecosystem and biodiversity materials that will foster understanding and awareness of the importance of protecting the environment, conservation, sustainable spatial management, introduction to the impacts of climate change. Observations were made using the inventory method, with data analysis focused on the content of macro nutrients in the soil taken from the arboretum land. The research location was at the Ocean University Arboretum, the research was conducted in June-November 2023. From the results of the study found 16 species with a total of 437 individuals. The most abundant species was Alysicarpus vaginalis with 92 individuals, followed by Ottochloa arnottiana with 55 individuals and Spermacoce sp. with 45 individuals. The species with the highest cover were Alysicarpus vaginalis and Digitaria sp., each at 220%, indicating significant dominance in the observed plant community. From the results of this study, it is recommended that schools, especially at the middle and high school levels, integrate visits and learning activities at the arboretum into the biology curriculum, because the arboretum can function as an outdoor natural laboratory that supports hands-on understanding of biodiversity, ecology, morphology, and plant conservation.
