Abstract

This article explores the ordered concepts of ‘Law and Gospel’ by Martin Luther and ‘Gospel and Law’ by Karl Barth. On the one hand, Luther understood Law and the Gospel as two different but not separate concepts of Christian life. The Law is what God asks Christians to do, while the Gospel is what Christians receive from God. On the other hand, Barth believes that theology should focus on the incarnation of Jesus Christ as proclaimed in the Gospel. This article answered two research questions: First, what is the relationship between the approach presented by Luther and Barth? Second, how can these approaches contribute to the attempt to trans(form) theologia viatorum in the living church? This study was conducted by a literature study. The result of the study showed that to transform and form theologia viatorum of the living church, the ability to hold hand in hand (manus in manu) the duty to God (Law), as proposed by Luther, and receiving the good news (Gospel), as suggested by Barth should enable the church to serve the world better.

Abstract

Abstract. The concept of evil and the fall of man remains a fascinating topic as it illustrates moral complexity, freedom of choice, and its impact on civilization and man's relationship with transcendent values. This article aims to analysis the concept of Manichaean dualism and measure it against the concept of the fall of man, according to John Calvin. This research uses a literature study method. The analysis results show that Manichaean dualism is eclectic and syncretic in different contexts by combining elements from various religious traditions. In contrast, Calvin's thought is very focused on reinterpreting the Christian tradition and emphasizing the authority of the Bible. For Calvin, the concept of dualism is very erroneous and unbiblical; the fall of man and evil should be understood through the doctrine of Adam and Eve's original sin, which resulted in the fall of man into sin because of their disobedience to God.Abstrak. Konsep kejahatan dan kejatuhan manusia tetap menjadi topik yang menarik karena menggambarkan kompleksitas moral, kebebasan pilihan, dan dampaknya terhadap peradaban serta hubungan manusia dengan nilai-nilai transenden. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis konsep dualisme Manichaean dan mengukurnya dengan konsep kejatuhan manusia menurut John Calvin. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode studi literatur. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa dualisme Manichaean bersifat eklektik dan sinkretik dalam konteks yang berbeda dengan menggabungkan elemen-elemen dari berbagai tradisi agama. Sebaliknya, pemikiran Calvin sangat fokus pada penafsiran atas tradisi Kristen dan menekankan otoritas Alkitab. Bagi Calvin, konsep dualisme sangat keliru dan tidak alkitabiah. Kejatuhan manusia dan kejahatan harus dipahami melalui doktrin dosa asal Adam dan Hawa, yang mengakibatkan kejatuhan manusia ke dalam dosa karena ketidaktaatan mereka kepada Tuhan.

Abstract

Abstract. The holiness of the Church, in the Scripture and magisterium, could be explained in its depiction as the bride of Christ. With the same depiction, Hans Urs von Balthasar was observantly concerned with the sins of the Church as summarized in his essay, “Casta Meretrix.” This research is a literature study with a historical-critical approach, seeking to explore Balthasar's perspective and its novelty. The study found a new angle offered by Balthasar in understanding the reality of the sinful Church, which centered on the figure and saving action of Jesus Christ, the Bridegroom. Balthasar's view influenced the renewal of the Church in real life, especially during the pontificate of Pope John Paul II. The Church confessed and asked for forgiveness for sins that have been committed as the way of the cross. Finally, we offer two antinomies to understand the nature of the Church. At the same time, the Church: is made up of sinners, but is always called to holiness; and she is historical on earth, but seeks her holiness in union with God in heaven.Abstrak. Kodrat Gereja yang kudus, dalam Kitab Suci dan ajaran resmi Gereja, dapat dijelaskan dalam penggambarannya sebagai mempelai Kristus. Dengan penggambaran yang sama, secara jeli Hans Urs von Balthasar menaruh perhatian pada dosa-dosa Gereja sebagaimana terangkum dalam esainya, “Casta Meretrix.” Kajian ini, dengan metode studi pustaka dan pendekatan historis-kritis, berusaha menggali pandangan Balthasar beserta kebaruannya. Studi ini menemukan cara pandang baru yang ditawarkan Balthasar dalam memahami realitas Gereja yang berdosa, yakni berfokus pada figur dan tindakan penyelamatan Yesus Kristus, Sang Pengantin Laki-laki. Pandangan Balthasar berpengaruh pada pembaruan Gereja secara real, secara khusus pada masa pontifikat Paus Yohanes Paulus II. Gereja melakukan pengakuan dan permohonan pengampunan atas dosa-dosa yang pernah dilakukan sebagai sebuah jalan salib. Akhirnya, kami menawarkan dua antinomi untuk memahami kodrat Gereja. Pada saat bersamaan Gereja: terdiri atas orang-orang berdosa, tetapi selalu dipanggil menuju kekudusan; dan ia menyejarah di dunia, tetapi berusaha mengusahakan kesuciannya dalam kesatuan dengan Allah di surga.

Abstract

The implementation of the General Election, including its implications for governance, has so far been full of various deviations from the principles of democracy. Therefore, with a theological perspective, democracy needs to be rebuilt to free society from democratic shifts in the Election and governance that have an impact on discomfort in living together. This article aims to construct a liberating political commitment of Christian society based on a dialogue between the ideas of democracy according to Karsadi and Franz Magnis-Suseno with the idea of the prophetic role of the church according to John Chr. Ruhulessin. The result of this study shows that a liberating political commitment can be built through the internalization of church teachings, so that the church is responsible for providing Christian political ethics education.

Abstract

Abstract. The argument of this research is that the church has a moral and ethical responsibility to conduct political education through discourse on political ethics in public spaces. This is based on historical facts that the Cristianity since the independence movement until now has had potential power and significant influence in politics in Indonesia. This research used the hermeneutic phenomenology method in the context of socio-political history. The result of the research showed that the church is quite proactive in responding to national and state issues in the Reformation Era, but it is still not optimal to conduct discourse on political ethics in public spaces. The political role of the church in general is still limited to carrying out liturgical ritual activities, praying together, and issuing formal shepherding calls at every election event.Abstrak. Argumentasi penelitian ini adalah gereja memiliki tanggung jawab moral dan etis melakukan pendidikan politik melalui diskursus etika politik di ruang-ruang publik. Hal ini didasarkan atas fakta sejarah bahwa agama sejak masa pergerakan perjuangan kemerdekaan sampai dengan masa kini memiliki kekuatan potensial dan pengaruh signifikan dalam perpolitikan di Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode fenomenologi hermeneutik dalam konteks sejarah sosio-politik. Hasil peneliteian menunjukkan bahwa gereja cukup pro aktif menyikapi persoalan bangsa dan negara di Era Reformasi, namun masih kurang maksimal memanfaatkan ruang publik untuk melakukan diskursus etika politik. Peran politik gereja secara umum masih sebatas melakukan kegiatan ritual liturgis, doa bersama, dan mengeluarkan seruan formal penggembalaan pada setiap perhelatan pemilu.

Abstract

Abstract. Martyrdom plays a fundamental role in shaping the identity and faith journey of Christians in Asia. This study aimed to obtain understanding the factors that shape Christian martyrdom in Asia, especially the role of political power, religious rivalry, and xenophobia. Using a historical-comparative method, this study analyzed cases of persecution from the early Christian period to the modern era, such as in the Roman Empire, Persia, China, and Japan. The result of the study showed that martyrdom is a phenomenon that is closely related to social, political, and cultural dynamics. Thus, the results of this study can be a guide for more contextual evangelism efforts to minimize conflict and violence.Abstrak. Kemartiran memainkan peran fundamental dalam membentuk identitas dan perjalanan iman kekristenan di Asia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami faktor-faktor yang membentuk kemartiran Kristen di Asia, terutama peran kekuasaan politik, rivalitas agama, dan xenofobia. Dengan menggunakan metode historis-komparatif, penelitian ini menganalisis kasus-kasus persekusi dari periode awal kekristenan hingga abad modern, seperti di Kekaisaran Romawi, Persia, Tiongkok, dan Jepang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemartiran merupakan fenomena yang sangat terkait dengan dinamika sosial, politik, dan budaya. Dengan demikian hasil penelitian ini dapat menjadi petunjuk bagi upaya penginjilan yang lebih bersifat kontekstual sehingga meminimalkan terjadinya konflik dan kekerasan.

Abstract

Abstract. Unresolved conflict in the Batak Toba community can lead to the severance of family relation with the emergence of the statement, "Mardomu di Tano Rara." This severance of family relation occurs because each party does not want to forgive. This article aims to analyze the concept of Paul's theology of reconciliation in the letter of Philemon as a resolution of severance of family relation in the conflict in the Batak Toba community. This study used a grammatical analysis approach to the Letter of Philemon. The results of the study show that Paul's approach in the Letter of Philemon provides a perspective that reconciliation not only bring abaout the restoration of damaged relationship, but also result in the reformation of relationship.Abstrak. Konflik yang tidak terselesaikan dalam masyarakat Batak Toba dapat menimbulkan keterputusan hubungan kekeluargaan dengan munculnya pernyataan, “Mardomu di Tano Rara.” Keterputusan kekeluargaan ini terjadi karena masing-masing pihak tidak mau mengampuni. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis konsep teologi pendamaian Paulus dalam surat Filemon sebagai resolusi keterputusan kekeluargaan dalam konflik di masyarakat Batak Toba. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan analisis gramatikal terhadap Surat Filemon. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan Paulus dalam Surat Filemon memberikan perspektif bahwa rekonsiliasi bukan hanya menghasilkan pemulihan relasi yang rusak, namun juga menghasilkan reformasi relasi.

Abstract

Abstract. The progress in artificial intelligence (AI) technology has revolutionized the perspectives, activities, and behaviors of human beings. AI has facilitated virtual interactions with humans at a remarkably advanced level, making it accessible to everyone. It has developed robots capable of emulating human behavior and engaging in a wide range of tasks, including participating in worship services. On the one hand, the inclusion of AI pastors has a beneficial effect on church services but, on the other hand, causes a detrimental effect on interpersonal services. This study investigated the function and influence of AI pastors on the future of the church in Indonesian through an analysis of Christian theology and ethics. We contended that AI pastors serve as tools that can enhance the future ministry of the church by critically considering ethical, biblical, and spiritual principles.Abstrak. Kemajuan teknologi AI telah mengubah cara pandang, cara kerja, dan tingkah laku manusia. AI telah membuka ruang kepada semua orang untuk dapat berinteraksi secara virtual manusia dengan kecanggihan dan kecerdasan yang sangat tinggi. AI telah membuat robot yang dapat bertindak seperti manusia dan melakukan berbagai kegiatan, termasuk dalam pelayanan keagamaan dengan hadirnya pendeta AI dalam pelayanan gerejawi. Kehadiran pendeta AI memberikan dampak positif bagi pelayanan gereja, namun berdampak negatif dalam pelayanan yang bersifat relasional. Dalam riset ini, kami melakukan penelitian terhadap peran dan dampak pendeta AI di masa depan gereja di Indonesia dengan melakukan studi teologi dan etika Kristen. Kami berargumen bahwa pendeta AI adalah instrumen yang dapat membantu pelayanan gereja di masa depan dengan memerhatikan secara saksama nilai etis, biblis, dan spiritual.

Abstract

Abstract. The theologians’ views (especially those who come from the patristic view) regarding the concept of the New Heaven and New Earth (Isa. 65:17-25), come to the conclusion that the fulfillment of the promise is with the coming of a new heaven and a new earth that will replace the recent heaven and earth. Through the historical interpretation of the text, I try to show the historical meaning and purpose of the concept. I focus this research on the history of the text by considering the context of the people as recipients of the core message of the book of Isaiah and its subsequent influence. The context of the recipients or initial readers of the text is the basis for the analysis in this study. I argue that the prioritization of the reconstruction of the Temple after the Babylonian exile as a focal point as well as a sign of God's presence blessing and fulfilling His promises by realizing the vision of the promised New Heaven and New Earth. Which means that the promise of the New Heaven and New Earth has been fulfilled.Abstrak. Pandangan para teolog (terutama yang berangkat dari pandangan kaum patristik) terkait konsep Langit Baru dan Bumi Baru (Yes. 65:17-25), sampai pada kesimpulan penantian penggenapan janji tersebut dengan hadirnya langit baru dan bumi baru kelak yang menggantikan langit dan bumi yang lama. Melalui tafsir historis teks, saya berupaya memperlihatkan makna dan tujuan awal konsep tersebut. Saya memfokuskan penelitian ini atas sejarah teks dengan melihat konteks dari sudut keberadaan umat selaku penerima pesan inti kitab Yesaya tersebut dan pengaruh setelahnya. Konteks penerima atau pembaca awal teks tersebut menjadi dasar analisis pada kajian ini. Saya berargumen bahwa pengutamaan pembangunan kembali Bait Suci pascapembuangan Babel sebagai titik fokus sekaligus tanda kehadiran Tuhan memberkati dan memenuhi janji-janji-Nya dengan mewujudkan visi Langit Baru dan Bumi Baru yang dijanjikan itu. Yang artinya, bahwa janji Langit Baru dan Bumi Baru telah digenapi.

Abstract

Abstract. Women and their bodies are highly vulnerable to various acts of violence, including sexual violence. Sexual violence against women's bodies often occurs in the public sphere as well as domestic or family, especially in cultures that uphold the patriarchal system. The narrative of Tamar who was raped by Amnon (2 Sam. 13) is one narrative that represents various narratives of women who are victims of sexual violence. This paper aims to examine the narrative of the body of woman who are victim of sexual violence based on the hermeneutic of trauma developed by Christopher G. Frechette and Elizabeth Boase. This study found that Amnon, Jonadab, Absalom, David, and Tamar were all victims of the patriarchal system, but Tamar as a woman who was a victim of sexual violence, still called for respect for the human body even though it had been "damaged" forever.Abstrak. Perempuan dan tubuhnya sangat rentan terhadap berbagai tindakan kekerasan, termasuk kekerasan seksual. Kekerasan seksual terhadap tubuh perempuan kerap kali terjadi di ranah publik maupun domestik atau keluarga, terutama dalam kebudayaan yang menjunjung tinggi sistem patriarkal. Narasi Tamar yang diperkosa Amnon (2Sam. 13) merupakan salah satu narasi yang mewakili berbagai narasi perempuan korban kekerasan seksual. Tulisan ini bertujuan mengkaji narasi tubuh perempuan korban kekerasan seksual berdasarkan kajian hermeneutik trauma yang dikembangkan oleh Christopher G. Frechette dan Elizabeth Boase. Kajian ini menemukan bahwa Amnon, Yonadab, Absalom, Daud, dan Tamar sama-sama adalah korban sistem patriarkal, akan tetapi Tamar sebagai perempuan korban kekerasan seksual, justru tetap menyerukan penghargaan terhadap tubuh manusia sekalipun telah “rusak” selamanya.
