Abstract

The purpose of the study was to develop an electronic portfolio instrument to assess concept mastery and creative thinking on project-based acid-base materials. The research participants are class XI, who will study acid-base materials. This research uses the 4D Research and Development model which are carried out up to stage 3 (Define, Design, and Development). On the define stage, a literature study, a field survey, material analysis, indicator analysis, and task analysis were conducted. The design stage designed grids and assessment rubrics, the preparation tasks consisting of four: making papers, practicum reports, posters, and concept maps. The design stage compiled an electronic portfolio instrument. The developmental stage conducts quality tests: initial development test, expert validity test obtained a CVR value of 1.00, reliability test with inter-rater obtained a Cronbach Alpha value between 0.652 and 1.000. After the electronic portfolio instrument was valid and reliable, a limited trial was conducted with N-Gain scores of task 1, task 2, task 3, and task 4, respectively: 0.17 (low), 0.13 (low), 0.46 (medium), and 0.32 (medium). The overall average of the pretest and posttest N-Gain scores is 0.90, with a higher category. This electronic portfolio instrument based on Project-Based Learning (PjBL) is expected to help teachers assess tasks on concept mastery and students' creative thinking on acid-based materials.

Abstract

The presence of excess Mn²⁺ in water can result in unpleasant odors and tastes, and its consumption can lead to neurological disorders in humans. Adsorption using oxidized cellulose is an efficient method for removing Mn²⁺ ions. In this study, cellulose was oxidized using the TEMPO/NaOCl/NaBr system with varying NaOCl concentrations (5, 15, and 30 mmol/g) to identify the optimum conditions for Mn²⁺ adsorption. The carboxyl group content in the oxidized cellulose samples was 0.2393, 0.2435, and 0.2664 mmol/g, respectively. The adsorption efficiencies were 92.40%, 91.71%, and 91.43%, with the highest efficiency observed at 5 mmol/g NaOCl. The decrease in adsorption efficiency at higher NaOCl concentrations was attributed to the oxidation of secondary hydroxyl groups, forming undesirable ketone groups and disrupting the reaction pathway. FTIR analysis confirmed successful oxidation with a new absorption band at 1646 cm⁻¹. XRD analysis showed an increase in the crystalline index to 82.8%, 83.1%, and 83.13% for NaOCl concentrations of 5, 15, and 30 mmol/g, respectively. This study highlights the potential of TEMPO/NaOCl/NaBr-oxidized cellulose as an effective adsorbent for Mn²⁺ removal under optimized conditions.

Abstract

This study addresses the issue of low active participation among students in chemistry learning, as well as their difficulties in understanding macroscopic, microscopic, and symbolic concepts, which contribute to unsatisfactory learning outcomes. To tackle these challenges and enhance students' performance in chemistry, a valid, practical, and effective IPSIA learning model was developed. The research employed a development approach based on the ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate) model, beginning with a thorough analysis of the curriculum. This was followed by the design of the IPSIA model, which was validated using a questionnaire instrument. The results of the validity test scored 98, categorizing it as "very good." Additionally, the practical test of the IPSIA model also received a score of 98, indicating that it is user-friendly. During the implementation phase, the effectiveness of the model was assessed through test results. The improvement in students' chemistry learning was evidenced by normalized gain scores: 0.57 for the control class and 0.72 for the experimental class at Senior High School (SMA) 2 Padangsidimpuan, as well as 0.52 for the control class and 0.64 for the experimental class at SMA 5 Padangsidimpuan. These findings demonstrate that the IPSIA learning model is valid, practical, and effective in improving students' chemistry learning outcomes.

Abstract

The lignocellulosic component contained in palm frond waste has potential as an alternative fuel by converting it into bio-oil through a pyrolysis process. However, bio-oil has poor quality when compared to conventional fuels. Therefore, the Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) process has been widely developed as a promising way to improve the poor physicochemical properties of bio-oil. In this study, a bimetallic CuO-ZnO catalyst loaded on mordenite zeolite was used as a catalyst for HDO bio-oil from palm fronds. Optimization efforts were made on several parameters that affect the reaction including temperature, catalyst mass, and reaction time. This study aims to improve the quality of bio-oil and determine the effect of variations in reaction parameters on the physicochemical properties of upgraded bio-oil. The optimum condition found was the HDO process with a catalyst mass of 3.5 wt% at 325 °C for 120 min. The physicochemical properties of bio-oil after the upgrading process were successfully improved from those of raw bio-oil. The result is a decrease in water content and total acid number, an increase in C and H content accompanied by a reduction in oxygen content with a degree of deoxygenation reaching 72.9%, and an increase in higher heating value (HHV).

Abstract

This research aims to compare the effectiveness of sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid catalysts in the esterification of frankincense cinnamic acid (STYRAX paraleoncomud PERK). Esterification of sulfuric acid catalyst is carried out with ethanol and for hydrochloric acid catalyst with methanol. Esterification was carried out by refluxing a mixture of 1:20 cinnamic acid - ethanol and methanol, with 3 mL of each catalyst at a temperature of 60oC for one hour. The results were rinsed with 3 x 50 mL distilled water and dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate. The results were filtered and verified for functional groups using FTIR and composition analysis using GC “ MS. The results of FTIR interpretation show a decrease in absorption intensity (-OH) at 3500 cm-1 as a functional group that reacts compared to the ester results as an indication of the ongoing esterification reaction. The resulting ethyl cinnamate has a high conversion of 84.42%. Methyl cinnamate also has a distinctive ester aroma but is clearer and based on GC-MS, the content of methyl cinnamate is relatively low, namely 34.40%, the remaining cinnamic acid is 37.28%, and various side products of 28.32%. Thus, the catalyst that provides better conversion is sulfuric acid, but it requires further purification by examining the appropriate absorbent and bleaching agent. The brown color of the ester product catalyzed by sulfuric acid is thought to occur due to the oxidation of the cinnamic acid double bond by the catalyst.
