Abstract

Farmers in Lembang Tumbang Datu apply environmentally friendly agricultural practices, such as the use of organic fertilizers and efficient traditional irrigation systems. However, despite its significant potential, this local wisdom is often underrecognized by authorities, who tend to prioritize modern agricultural technologies that are not always suitable for local conditions. This study employs a qualitative research design aimed at understanding social phenomena from the participants’ perspectives. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling, in which informants are selected based on their relevance and in-depth knowledge of the village context being studied. In addition, snowball sampling is applied to identify additional participants through recommendations from initial key informants. The key informants in this study include traditional leaders and farmers who are familiar with the cultural practices in Lembang Tumbang Datu and are directly involved in these activities. The total number of participants in this study is 16 individuals. The results of the study show that several applications of local wisdom of the Lembang Tumbang Datu community in rice farming demonstrate a close relationship between culture, spirituality, and environmental sustainability. Each stage of farming, from Mangrara Banne, Manglammak Banne, Mantanan, to Mangrakan, is carried out with meaningful traditional rituals, reflecting gratitude, togetherness, and respect for nature and ancestors. These rituals serve to maintain harmony between humans and nature, while also regulating sustainable agricultural management. Customary prohibitions, the use of natural materials, and determining planting times based on natural signs demonstrate the high ecological value of this traditional knowledge. Thus, the agricultural system in Lembang Tumbang Datu is not only a means of food production, but also a manifestation of cultural identity that affirms food independence through spiritual, social, and ecological balance.

Abstract

The plantation sector plays a strategic role in the national economy. Tobacco is one of the leading commodities that contributes to national economic development. This is evidenced by the tobacco industry, which employs an average of 47,840 people. Bojonegoro Regency is one of the largest tobacco producers in East Java Province, but crop productivity tends to fluctuate. This is due to the diversity of production inputs used by farmers. This study aims to group tobacco farmers based on their patterns of production input use. The approach used in this study is multivariate cluster analysis with the K-means algorithm. The method used in this study is descriptive quantitative with primary data collection through questionnaires to 100 tobacco farmer respondents from six sub-districts using the Simple Random Sampling technique. The sub-districts were selected based on the largest tobacco production in descending order, starting from Kepohbaru, Kedungadem, Baureno, Sugihwaras, Sukosewu, and Temayang. The variables analyzed included land area, number of seedlings, amount of fertilizer, labor, pesticides, and capital. The data were processed through Z-score standardization and analyzed using the K-Means Clustering algorithm with the help of SPSS software. The determination of the optimal number of clusters was validated using the Elbow and Silhouette Coefficient methods. The characteristics of the farmers revealed that the majority of tobacco farmers in Bojonegoro were of productive age (51-60 years) with considerable farming experience (16-25 years), but in terms of education, they were predominantly elementary school graduates with relatively small land holdings (≤0.5 Ha). The grouping of tobacco farmers using K-means clustering is expected to form groups of farmers based on patterns of production input use so that the results of this study can be used as a reference in the formulation of agricultural policies.

Abstract

Indonesia, once a major global sugar producer, has become increasingly dependent on imports to meet domestic demand. This study analyzes the determinants of sugar import dependency in Indonesia using an econometric approach. The research utilizes time-series data from 2000 to 2024 and applies model economic Indonesian sugar to examine the effects of key variables, including domestic sugar production, consumption, international sugar prices, exchange rates, and government policies. The findings show that domestic production has a significant negative effect on sugar imports, while consumption and international prices have a positive and significant impact. Exchange rate depreciation is also associated with higher import values. In addition, inconsistent government policies contribute to structural inefficiencies in the sugar sector, further reinforcing import dependency. These results indicate that Indonesia’s reliance on sugar imports is driven not only by the imbalance between domestic supply and demand but also by broader economic and institutional factors. Therefore, policy efforts should focus on increasing agricultural productivity, modernizing sugar processing industries, and ensuring consistent trade regulations. Strengthening these aspects is essential to reduce import dependency and enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of Indonesia’s sugar industry.
