Abstract

Reading comprehension is a fundamental skill that enables elementary school students to understand information presented in written texts and supports their success in various subjects. However, some fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 6 Sanggalangi’ still struggle with reading comprehension, which impacts their overall academic performance. This study aims to analyze the factors causing low reading ability and to identify the predominant reading comprehension difficulties experienced by three fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 6 Sanggalangi’. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach. The research subjects consisted of three fourth-grade students as the main participants, while the classroom teacher and the students’ parents served as supporting informants. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that low reading ability is influenced by internal factors, including low intellectual ability, low interest in reading, and low motivation to learn, as well as external factors, namely learning facilities and infrastructure, the family and school environments, and teachers’ instructional competencies. Students also experienced major difficulties in distinguishing similar letters, reading long syllables and words, reading sentences fluently, identifying main ideas, answering questions based on the text, and retelling the content of the reading passage. This study concludes that improving students’ reading comprehension requires ongoing collaboration between teachers, parents, schools, and students through regular reading practice, literacy activities, and appropriate teaching strategies.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of concept understanding among elementary school students in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS), particularly on the topic of the states of matter and their changes, which was caused by teacher-centered learning and the limited use of innovative learning media. This study aims to determine the level of students' IPAS concept understanding before and after the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by the Qreatif Educative digital media, as well as to analyze its impact on improving the IPAS concept understanding of fourth-grade students at SDN 2 Sukajadi Purwakarta. This study employed a quantitative approach with a Pre-Experimental One-Group Pretest–Posttest design. The research sample was determined using a saturated sampling technique, involving 32 fourth-grade students. Data were collected through a concept understanding test and analyzed using the N-Gain test and paired samples t-test. The results showed that the average pretest score of 51.56 increased to 72.97 in the posttest, with an average N-Gain of 0.45, categorized as moderate. The paired samples t-test results showed a t-value of 22.48 with a significance of 0.000 (< 0.05), so H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. It can therefore be concluded that the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by the Qreatif Educative digital media had a positive and significant impact on improving elementary school students' IPAS concept understanding. This study recommends that teachers adopt this model as an alternative approach in IPAS learning, and that future researchers develop research designs with control groups and larger samples. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of icons, indices, and symbols and uncover the construction of meaning in political criticism in the digital comic strip Si Juki on the Instagram account @jukihoki throughout 2025. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a semiotic approach by Charles Sanders Peirce. The research subjects included 15 politically themed comic strips selected using documentation techniques. The results show that the meaning of political criticism is constructed holistically through the integration of visual and verbal sign elements. Icons function to represent political actors, situations, and events through visual similarities. Indices demonstrate the causal relationship between government policies and the real social impacts felt by the public. Meanwhile, symbols convey criticism through specific terms, expressions, and visual attributes understood based on Indonesian socio-political conventions. This study successfully identified five categories of political criticism: criticism of power (5 items), criticism of the state (4 items), criticism of decision-making (2 items), criticism of general policy (2 items), and criticism of budget allocation (2 items). Overall, the Si Juki comic strip utilizes satirical satire and cynicism as an effective means of social control in evaluating the dynamics of government administration and all public policies in Indonesia.

Abstract

Textbooks are one of the primary instructional resources used in Indonesian language learning in schools. One of their essential components is reading tasks designed to develop students' reading skills. This study aimed to identify and analyze the representation of reading tasks presented in an Indonesian language textbook, focusing on the types of reading tasks, the targeted cognitive levels, and their alignment with the scientific approach promoted by the Merdeka Curriculum. The study employed a document analysis method using a descriptive qualitative approach. The findings revealed that the reading tasks were predominantly concentrated at low to medium cognitive levels, whereas tasks designed to foster critical and creative thinking remained limited. These findings suggested that the textbook has not yet provided a balanced distribution of cognitive demands across reading activities. The study highlighted the need for textbook developers and teachers to design more diverse and cognitively challenging reading tasks that support comprehensive reading instruction and promote students' higher-order thinking skills in accordance with the objectives of the Merdeka Curriculum.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the importance of teachers' initial experiences in implementing a deep learning approach in Integrated Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) learning at the elementary school level. IPAS learning should not merely emphasize concept memorization; it needs to be designed by teachers so that pupils can understand the material meaningfully, connect it with real-life experiences, and apply it in everyday life. The deep learning approach requires teachers to create learning processes that are meaningful, mindful, and joyful. In practice, implementing this approach still requires adjustment, particularly for teachers who are beginning to apply it in the classroom. This study aimed to describe a teacher's initial experience in implementing the deep learning approach, identify the challenges encountered, and describe the teacher's efforts to overcome those challenges in fourth-grade IPAS learning at MIN 2 Barito Kuala. This study employed a qualitative approach with a narrative research design. The research subject was a fourth-grade teacher. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data trustworthiness was established through technique triangulation. The findings showed that the teacher's initial experience was reflected in efforts to understand and implement the principles of meaningful learning, mindful learning, and joyful learning in IPAS instruction. The teacher connected the topic of changes in states of matter with pupils' real-life experiences, encouraged engagement through question-and-answer activities, discussion, observation, and simple experiments, and created a more enjoyable learning atmosphere. The challenges faced by the teacher included limited time, diverse pupil characteristics, limited facilities and learning media, and the need to improve teacher competence. The teacher's efforts included effective time management, use of available media, adjustment of learning strategies, and competence development through independent learning, peer discussion, and training. Thus, the implementation of deep learning had a positive impact on pupils' activeness, engagement, and understanding.

Abstract

Biology learning on the human digestive system requires deep conceptual understanding, yet the cognitive engagement of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Kubutambahan remains low due to the limited variation of learning media used. This study aimed to determine the profile of learning outcome improvement, the difference in learning outcomes, and the effect size of applying question-based E-Flashcard learning media with a Think Pair Share (TPS) setting on students' learning outcomes on the human digestive system. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The sample consisted of 58 eleventh-grade science students selected through cluster random assignment, with class XI.3 as the experimental group (n=29) and class XI.4 as the control group (n=29). Data were collected using an essay test that had been tested for content validity (Gregory coefficient = 1.00), item validity (r-count 0.856– 0.930), and reliability (Cronbach's Alpha = 0.973). Data were analyzed using N-Gain and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). The results showed that the mean N-Gain of the experimental class was 0.86 (high category), higher than the control class at 0.53 (moderate category). The ANCOVA test showed a significant difference in learning outcomes between the two classes (Sig. <0.001), with an adjusted mean of 92.711 for the experimental class and 69.289 for the control class. The effect size (Partial Eta Squared) of 0.804 was categorized as a large effect. It is concluded that question-based E-Flashcard learning media with a TPS setting is effective and has a large influence in improving students' cognitive learning outcomes on the human digestive system.
