Abstract

In second/foreign language learning, motivation, anxiety, and attitude play a role (Pham, 2021). Dörnyei (2001) pointed out that the classroom is such a complex place that a single motivational principle cannot explain what happens within because motivation is a complex, composite entity with distinct and state-like context-specific components. Additionally, anxiety and attitude are complex constructs, and despite the differences in research methods used and the conceptualization of various motivational configurations, the general view among these studies is to treat motivation, anxiety, and attitude as dependent constructs characterized by multiple guiding variables (Dörnyei, 2010; Galánta, 2009; MacIntyre et al., 2015). Current approaches have also called for integration between these constructs and language learning situations in the FL classroom. These multi-variable approaches help this research explores motivation, anxiety, and attitude in 280 international students in Hungary taking courses in L2 Hungarian with a 34-item questionnaire. As expected, motivation, anxiety, and attitude are strongly related, and the self-guides emerge as strong predictors of motivated behavior and attitudes and have a negative correlation with language anxiety (Csizér & Dörnyei, 2005). Anxiety integrates with self-confidence, and language proficiency has the highest correlation with attitude. Finally, the attitude toward the course correlates highly with the attitude toward the community. Learners who report high ideal selves are thus most likely linguistically self-confident and exhibit a motivated behavior that encourages them to be exposed to Hungarian outside their classrooms and to have a positive attitude toward the community, the Hungarian language, and their teachers.

Abstract

This research seeks to explore parents' investment in English for young learners. Nowadays, English is not a compulsory lesson in state elementary schools in Indonesia. However, parents invested their children in non-formal English education. This research offers the point of view of state elementary school students' parents regarding English education at an early age. This research implemented a qualitative with a case study approach. It involved six parents of state elementary school students. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and demographic questionnaires. The interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis. This research finding indicated that all parents had high or positive expectations after their children joined an English course. The main factor indicating this was that English is not a compulsory lesson anymore in Indonesian state elementary schools. Thus, the parents' involvement in supporting their children to learn English made them practice it at home and in additional English courses.

Abstract

Private early childhood education encounters significant challenges in delivering inclusive education. This study investigates management strategies in these institutions, focusing on RA Ulumul Qur'an Al-Madani in South Kalimantan, a pilot for inclusive education. Using a case study approach, data was gathered through interviews, observation, and document analysis. The findings indicate a structured approach to management across various aspects. Admission procedures involve engaging parents, assessing children's special needs, and forming suitable groups. Curriculum management includes modifications, substitutions, and providing individualized education programs. Strategies to enhance teacher competency include selection, training, and expert support. Facility management focuses on planning, maintenance, and procurement of necessary resources with external support. Public relations utilize social media for community engagement and Whatsapp group for effective communication. Effective management positively impacts student learning, parent involvement, and children's rights. Abstract

This research aimed to describe the English learning strategies of English Education Study Program students inside and outside the classroom, how students used English in daily communication, and how students acted as tour guides in Yogyakarta. This qualitative research obtained the data from interview protocol and audio-visual recordings. The results showed that students were not aware of the language learning strategies used. Most students had difficulties in communicating by using English in the class because of their unsupported environment. However, they were able to communicate outside the classroom. They used memory and social strategies, followed by metacognitive and cognitive strategies. In these strategies, the participants gave a large second portion after the memory strategies. It showed that students still tended to be controlled by memory and awareness of the ability to use English. Affective strategies took the third sequence. Two strategies related to this social environment were applied by participants with different portions of the previous strategies.

Abstract

Various ethnic students have triggered social interaction forms, like looking for friends during break time to go to the cafeteria or sitting relaxed in the school park. Likewise, students tend to choose the optional extracurricular activities based on their friends because they are reluctant to get involved in an activity if their fellow friends are not in the group. This research aimed to identify forms of social interaction of students of different ethnicities at a public senior high school in Batam. It used qualitative with a case study approach. The participants were the student assistant principal, the English teacher, and students at a public senior high school in Batam. Data analysis used the interactive analysis model. The research results showed the associative social interaction forms were seen during extracurricular activities, collaboration in study groups, and classroom cleaning competitions. Meanwhile, the dissociative social interaction was used when the use of local languages during conflicts and disputes over student council elections.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the process of adaptation from online learning to face-to-face learning in post-Covid-19 and describe the extent to which students and teachers can adapt from online learning to face-to-face in post-Covid-19. This research used the theory of habitus and environment by Pierre Bourdieu. It used qualitative with case study research. The research participants were the teachers, students, and curriculum assistant principals of SMAN 15 Batam. Data validity tests include credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability tests. Meanwhile, data analysis used the interactive analysis model Miles and Huberman (2002). The research results showed that the process of adapting online learning to face-to-face has stages of preparation, implementation, and learning. The level of achievement of teachers and students in adapting to learning can be seen from the learning methods used by teachers, attendance, and student tardiness.

Abstract

The research was conducted as a potential means to address the issues about low student learning outcomes, especially in cognitive abilities. Facts show that the score was still below the minimum mastery criteria of 75, especially in the field of social science for sixth-grade students. Social studies learning is recorded as it still uses conventional methods and teachers rarely give feedback on student work, coupled with the minimal use of media and not providing motivation to students. The present research aimed to apply the teams’ games tournament (TGT) approach to enhance the students’ cognitive abilities. The researchers employed two improvement cycles in the form of classroom action research procedures. The progress of students' learning outcomes was in each cycle, starting at 34.62% in the pre-cycle, completeness rose to 84.6% after the first cycle and reached 92.3% in the second cycle. The research results suggest that the implementation of the TGT method yielded a significant improvement in cognitive abilities of academic achievement among the research participants.
