Abstract

Amputation is a surgery that involves removing part or all of a limb or some abnormal growths from the body. The prevalence of amputations was approximately 1.6 million in 2005 in the United States and will double to 3.6 million in 2050. The main cause of upper extremity amputation is trauma, which is around 80%, especially in young adults with an incidence of amputation due to electrical burn injuries of around 2% (mainly transradial and transhumeral). The effects of an electric current depend on the type of current, voltage, tissue resistance, current strength, the path the current takes through the body, duration of contact, and individual susceptibility. Individuals undergoing upper extremity amputations need comprehensive rehabilitation by physiatrists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, prosthetists, and psychologists. An appropriate rehabilitation program and a comfortable prosthesis (including maintenance of limb length) aim at prosthesis reconstruction. In addition to rehabilitation programs, appropriate amputation techniques can also facilitate individuals in the functional recovery process.

Abstract

Stunting is currently still a problem in Makassar. Incidence stunting from Riskesdas data in Makassar is 25.9% and stunting data at Kassi Kassi Health Center is 22.92%, this figure is still above the stunting limit according to World Health Organization, which is 20%. One of the causes of stunting is mainly influenced by nutritional intake, exclusive breastfeeding for six months because breast milk is needed during the growth period. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and the incidence of stunting in toddlers aged 6-24 months. The research design used was observational analytic with a cross-sectional approach. This research was conducted in the working area of the Kassi Kassi Health Center from November to December 2021. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. A total of 90 samples in this study that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were then analyzed by bivariate test using the Pearson Chi-Square test. The findings from this study were stunted by as many as 55 respondents (61.1%). The study also found that more were getting exclusive breastfeeding as many as 55 respondents (61.1%). The incidence of stunting showed a higher proportion in infants aged 6-24 months without exclusive breastfeeding (p-value 0.001). This indicates that there is a relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and the incidence of stunting in toddlers at Kassi-Kassi Health Center.

Abstract

Maternal mortality is a health problem in Indonesia as the number of cases is relatively high at 7.389 cases which the main cause being bleeding, especially abortion bleeding in young pregnancies. The purpose of this study was to determine the influences of inter-pregnancy interval and the working load of mothers on the occurrences of abortion at RSIA Ananda Makassar in 2021. This research also attempted to investigate the most dominant risk factors causing abortion. The methodological approach used in this research was quantitative analytical research with a case-control design. The sampling method was a purposive sampling technique consisting of 234 samples divided into 117 case samples and 117 control samples obtained from medical record data. The findings of this Chi-square analysis test indicated that the p-value of pregnancy interval and occupation was 0.000 (p<0.05), and the results of the multiple regression test showed an OR value of 3.018 for the occupational variable. Therefore, this study concluded that there were significant influences of the inter-pregnancy interval and maternal occupation on the abortus incidence at RSIA Ananda Makassar in 2021, with the inter-pregnancy interval being considered the most dominant risk factor for abortion.

Abstract

Analysis of Risk Factors of Neonatal Asphyxia in Labuang Baji Hospital, Makassar, 2021. Asphyxia was the second leading cause of neonatal death in Indonesia in 2019, with 5,464 cases reported. Asphyxia occurs due to inadequate blood flow or gas exchange to or from the fetus in newborns. If not promptly and adequately addressed, this condition can damage vital organs. This study aims to identify the risk factors influencing the incidence of neonatal asphyxia at RSUD Labuang Baji Makassar. The research design employed is an observational analytic approach with a case-control method. Sampling was conducted using purposive sampling techniques with secondary data from patient medical records. The sample consisted of 47 cases and 47 controls, and analysis was performed using chi-square tests and odds ratios. The study found a p-value <0.05 for the association between asphyxia and maternal anemia, premature rupture of membranes (PROM), and low birth weight (LBW), with odds ratios of 3.410, 3.872, 7.451, and 7.765, respectively. The p-value >0.05 indicated no significant association between asphyxia and maternal age, preeclampsia, parity, and mode of delivery. This study concludes that maternal anemia, premature rupture of membranes (PROM), low birth weight (LBW), and gestational age are risk factors for neonatal asphyxia at RSUD Labuang Baji Makassar in 2021.

Abstract

The most frequent soft tissue cancer in children is rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS). A diagnosis typically occurs between the ages of 5 and 6 in women. We report a seven-year-old girl was referred to Hospitals with complaints of a protruding left eye. The swelling was presented in July 2021, which was small earlier but has increased and become more prominent. An examination of the left eyelid showed a 2.5 x 2.5 x 1.5 cm solid mass with edema, erythema, and secretion in the superior and inferior affected eyelid. A Head CT scan revealed a left superolateral lacrimal duct tumour with a normal intracerebral structure. The histopathology examination found dacryoadenitis with an RMS tumour. This patient was treated using the RMS multidrug chemotherapy protocol (vincristine, actinomycin, and cyclophosphamide) for three sessions, which decreased tumour progressivity five months later. Early and appropriate treatment of this patient with chemotherapy regimens according to the protocol for RMS has a good prognosis.

Abstract

Sepsis is increasing every year and can be life-threatening. In the diagnosis of sepsis, it is challenging to identify the causative agent of infection. This research aims to determine the proportion of positive blood culture in sepsis patients at Hasanuddin University Hospital, Makassar. Blood cultures were collected from 98 adult patients with sepsis manifestations. This research design is cross-sectional with a descriptive observation approach. The data analysed in descriptive statistics were utilised to summarise patient demographics, treatments, and outcomes. Thirteen of 98 samples were positive for microbial pathogens (13.26%). The elderly group had the highest percentage (76.5%); eighty-seven patients (88.77%) were treated with antibiotic therapy prior to blood culture collection. Cephalosporins are the most administered antibiotics (72.4%). Administration of empirical therapy prior to blood culture collection may decrease the sensitivity of culture results. The culture of the infectious focus should be done to assist in the consideration of antimicrobial treatment.

Abstract

The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is inexpensive and included as part of complete blood counts studied in various clinical conditions and sepsis. Alterations in NLR have been associated with disease severity and outcomes. The study aimed to determine whether NRL can be a prognostic marker for mortality/length of stay in neonatal sepsis. This retrospective cohort study examined the relationship between high NLR and mortality/length of stay in neonatal sepsis in neonates treated at RSUP Dr Wahidin Sudirohusodo Makassar from January 2018 to December 2020. Data from 138 neonates with complete medical records were analyzed. The NLR value increased more with mortality outcomes and length of stay less than seven days. No significant association was found between NLR and patient outcomes or length of stay. The study has found no association between NLR and outcomes or length of hospital stay in neonatal sepsis.
