Abstract

Abstract This study discussed about code switching and code mixing used on Boy William YouTube Channel. The purpose of the study is to analyze the type of code-switching and code mixing in two videos in Boy William YouTube channel and to find out the reasons to do code-switching and code mixing on his talk show program. The type of this study is descriptive qualitative research. The subject of the study is 2 videos, video 1 is the talk show with Chelsea Islan in #nebengboy# program and video 2 is the talk show with Nikita Mirzani in #drinkwithboy# program. The data was taken from the transcript of the conversation in the talk show. The most dominant type of code switching in video 1 is inter-sentential type, the second type was intra- sentential type and the third type was emblematic switching. In video 2, the most dominant type is intra-sentential type, the second type was inter-sentential type and the third type was emblematic switching. In code mixing analysis found that in video 1, the most dominant type is alternation, the second type is insertion, the third type is congruent lexicalization. Meanwhile, in video 2, the most dominant type is insertion, the second type is alternation, the third type is congruent lexicalization. In this study, the most dominant reason was talking about particular topic.Keywords: code switching, code mixing, reasons, code, lexicalization

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic required learning to be done online. Likewise, the assessment had to be done online. This study intended to examine the assessment of writing skills on online learning in Senior High School (SMA) in Denpasar. The study was a qualitative approach with a structured interview. Eight questions were asked to an English teacher to explore how the writing assessment in online learning done by the teacher. The findings showed that the teacher already understood the importance of assessment and already done the authentic assessment, formative assessment, and summative assessment. However, in assessing the writing, several aspects such as the organization of the writing, discourse, and mechanics (punctuation, spelling, and capitalization) were not assessed by the teacher. Additionally, the teacher faced some obstacles in terms of plagiarism/originality of students’ writing and time management in conducting writing assessments on online learning. To solve this problem, the teacher warned the students about plagiarism and used an online plagiarism checker to check the authenticity of student work. Furthermore, to solve the problem of time-management teachers divided the time strictly between planning, teaching, and assessing. The research suggested that there is a need to conduct training for teachers to do online assessment,s especially on writing skills.

Abstract

This present study aims at analyzing the turn-taking strategy in a debate of Sunda Empire in Indonesia Lawyer Club (ILC) talk show broadcasted by TV One, one of the national television channels in Indonesia. Sunda Empire is an organization whose foundation lies in the romanticized idea of reviving glorious feudal kingdom of Sunda.  With the application of the turn-taking strategy by Stenstroom's framework, this qualitative study was conducted through conversational analysis. There were five steps in analyzing the conversation, such as streaming Indonesia lawyer club episode Sunda Empire, taking note of the conversation, classifying the data, transcribing the data, translating the data, and interpreting the data. The results of the study revealed that all turn-taking strategies appear in the debate namely starting up, taking over, interrupting, overlapping, repair, silent pause, repeating words, filled pause, promoting, appealing, and giving up strategy. The most frequent turn-taking strategy occurred is starting up strategy. Theoretically, this study can support the theory of conversational analysis of turn-taking strategy. Practically, teachers can use it as a reference for an applied linguistics course.

Abstract

Students’ interest in reading has been studied by many researchers.  However, there is little attention given to examining the interest of EFL students on recreational reading activity. Additionally, few studies have documented why EFL students have certain interests on the recreational reading activity. To fill this gap, why students have certain interest in recreational reading and the reasons why students have. This paper aims at describing the EFL students' interest of choosing recreational reading and their reasons for choosing the activity. To achieve this aim, the research used qualitative case study. By administering purposive sampling technique, five EFL students at the sixth grade were selected as the research participants. Data were collected from interview. The collected data were analyzed by following thematic analysis.  The result found that a) the students’ high interest in recreational reading activity, and b) the reasons why they had high interest were caused by some advantages they agreed can develop their cognitive and affective aspects.

Abstract

The decline in character that occurred in Indonesia made the Government emphasize character education in every school. This study aims to identify the five core values proposed by the Ministry of Education and Culture (2017) contained in the characterization of Eustace Scrubb in the novel entitled The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader. This research is qualitative research. The results of this study found 15 characterizations of Eustace Scrubb, namely naughty, impolite, selfish, arrogant, greedy, deceitful, fearful, bad-tempered, cooperative, honest, courageous, willing to sacrifice, helpful, curious, and friendly. There were also changes in several characterizations from bad characters to good characters. From 15 characterizations, there are 7 characterizations which are included in the five core values, namely friendly which is included in the value of religious character, willing to sacrifice is included in the values of nationalist character, courage, and curiosity which are included in the value of the character of independent, helpful and cooperative including in the value of mutual cooperation, and honest is included in the value of integrity character. The results showed that children's novels can be used as a medium to teach character education to children. Children's novels contain character values that can be used as examples for children in learning good characters. Thus, an implication can be drawn from the study in relation to raising teachers’ awareness in using stories to teach character values.

Abstract

This article is entitled “Uncover Implied Messages in Burger King Advertisement Found on Youtube: A Semiotic Analysis”. Burger King is one of the multinational chain used video as their advertisement related to COVID-19 pandemic that uses weird and eccentric verbal and visual signs, which not easy to understand and carried implied messages. This study aims to find out the implied messages in Burger King Advertisement found on YouTube by analyzing its verbal and visual signs. The data was taken from Burger King YouTube channel using observation method. Furthermore, it analyzed descriptive qualitative method using theory of semiotics by Saussure (1983) and Barthes (1998). The finding shows that both verbal and visual signs in the advertisement “Burger King | Stay Home of the Whopper” had hidden messages. Generally, they want to help the government stop the spread of COVID-19 virus by informing and educating their viewers about current procedures and situations.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe translation techniques used in translating Indonesian Fables into English. The data is taken from bilingual fable books from five different publishers. The research uses purposive sampling technique and also comparative method to analyze the data. The finding shows that there are nine translation techniques used by translators namely equivalence, literal translation, discursive creation, borrowing, variation, transposition, modulation, reduction, and deletion. Equivalence is the most frequently used technique followed by literal translation. For further study, researcher may pay attention on the accuracy of the translation and readability of the translated text.

Abstract

Abstract This study is a comparative literature that focuses on the differences of two literary works, namely Timun Mas and Beauty and the Beast. The study analyses the similarities and differences in two different cultures; Asian and Western cultures, by using American School theory. This research usesa qualitative method which was based on library research. The results of this study can be formulated as follows: 1) Both have similarities in facing the monster. (2) Both have differences in the way how the monster is described, and how the stories end; in Timun Mas, the monster is a green huge male, and in Beauty and The Beast, the monster is described as a huge animal. In Timun Mas, the story ends when the main character kills the monster, while in Beauty and The Beast, the main character marries to the monster. Keywords : Comparative Literature, monster, American School

Abstract

Songs can be a media to uses code switching, and there are a lot of this kind of songs in Indonesia. So to help in better understanding of code switching, the analysis of code switching and in Indonesian song must be done. The objective of this research was to describe the type of code switching that were found in some Indonesian popular pop songs from 2000’s – 2010’s and to explain the cause of code switching in Indonesian popular pop songs from 2000’s – 2010’s. The research used content analysis design. The main research instrument was the researcher herself. The object of the data was the song lyric of seven songs that represented pop songs in 2000's - 2010's. To collect the data, the researcher used content analysis technique. Based on the analysis there were 32 data of types of code switching and its causes. There are three types of code switching based on poplack’s theory that are found. The first types of code switching that were found was tag switching with one data. Second, inter-sentential switching with 26 data which is the types of code switching that is commonly found. The last is intra-sentential switching with 5 data. The cause of code switching found were 5 out of 7 causes of code switching based on hoffman’s theory with the most commonly found was talking about particular topic with 23 data. Quoting somebody else with 2 data, interjection only 1 data, repetition used for clarification with 2 data, and the last was intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor with 4 data. Since this research only investigate the types of code switching and the causes based on relevant theories. Therefore, the researcher suggests for other researcher who interested in this topic to also analyze code mixing or the impact of using code switching for listener. Keywords : Code Switching, The cause of code switching

Abstract

The aims of this research were analyzing teachers’ perception on the insertion of Balinese culture in BIPA instruction and the ways to present culture in the instruction. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by using questionnaire distributed to BIPA teachers in Undiksha Language Center and through interview as well as focused group discussion. The data were analysed  quantitatively by looking at the percentage of response given by teachers and qualitatively by using the method of data analysis consisting of data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The result of the study showed that BIPA teachers support the insertion of Balinese culture in the instruction. In addition, there were found several ways to present the culture in the instruction, namely (1) presenting culture boxes in the textbook, (2) using authentic materials, (3) supporting the students to interact with native speakers and (4) presenting cultural elements through reading text and listening activities.Keywords : Balinese Culture, BIPA, Instruction
