Abstract

This article discusses the central role of the KH. Sahal Mahfudh as a breaker of thought dullness among Nahdliyin through a genealogical approach to the jurisprudence of civilization. Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), one of the largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia, plays a significant role in shaping the religious identity and civilization of society. However, like other organizations, NU also face challenges in the face of rapid social, political, and technological changes. KH Sahal Mahfudh, a renowned scholar and NU leader, became a key figure who carried out the mission of renewing the understanding of jurisprudence among Nahdliyin. This article describes the genealogy of jurisprudence thought among Nahdliyin since the beginning of NU to KH. Sahal Mahfudh's role as a pioneer in reviving and renewing scientific discourse within the NU. Through the genealogy analysis method, this article traces the origins of jurisprudence in Nahdliyin and examines its development from time to time. The results show that over time, jurisprudent thinking among Nahdliyin tends to experience stagnation, especially in dealing with contemporary issues. This poses a challenge to answering the problems of Islamic laws that are relevant to the context of the times. KH Sahal Mahfudh, with his progressive and inclusive vision, succeeded in offering a jurisprudent approach that is relevant and adaptive to changing times. Through his work, he invited Nahdliyin to re-explore the roots of authentic Islamic science, while still paying attention to the context of modern civilization. KH. Sahal Mahfudh's important contribution to developing scientific discourse among Nahdliyin helped unravel the stagnation of thought and paved the way for the continuous renewal of Islamic thought. Thus, this article provides insight into the importance of the renewal of thought among Nahdliyin, especially in the context of modern civilization. The genealogy of civilization jurisprudence is described through the role of KH. Sahal Mahfudh provided a valuable contribution to understanding the dynamics of Islamic thought in Indonesia, as well as its relevance in facing various contemporary challenges.

Abstract

Hajj, a pillar of Islam for Muslims who are able, has a high spiritual dimension while involving social, economic, and psychological aspects in its preparation and execution. The waiting period before Hajj is often challenging, especially in the context of people's anxiety. This study aims to analyze and understand anxiety during the Hajj waiting period and its impact on the preparation and actualization of worship. In the context of the data type and research objectives, a non-positivistic or naturalism paradigm was used. Qualitative research, which focuses on human actions and interactions in natural settings, defines this approach. The research findings show that the frustration experienced by prospective pilgrims is not only influenced by the long waiting period and the additional costs required but also includes a deeper aspect of cosmological roots in Muslim understanding. Hajj, one of Islam's high pillars, has shifted people's perceptions to be more than just an achievement in the spiritual journey. However, it should be noted that this study needs to be more focused in its focus, which is on analyzing the queuing aspect of the waiting period. This study has yet to explore the regulation of Hajj worldwide, which has significant variations, including developing the nusuk application technology proposed by the Saudi Arabian government to address queuing issues.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between religiosity and tolerance among university students. This research focuses on how university students’ level of religiosity relates to their attitudes towards differences in religion, culture, and views in the academic environment. The research method was a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. This study involved 160 students from various programs at several universities. Data were collected using a questionnaire consisting of a religiosity measurement scale and tolerance attitude measurement scale. The religiosity measurement scale includes the dimensions of belief, involvement in religious activities, and importance of religion in daily life. The tolerance attitude measurement scale assessed students' responses to statements describing openness, appreciation, and respect for differences. The results of the analysis show a positive correlation between the level of religiosity of university students and their tolerance attitudes. Students who showed higher levels of religiosity tended to have more tolerant attitudes. These findings suggest that religion can act as an important factor in shaping students' social attitudes in the academic environment. This study contributes to the understanding of the role of religion in shaping tolerant attitudes among university students. The implications of these findings can help in designing more inclusive education programs that emphasize openness to differences and respect for diversity. In addition, this study underscores the importance of opening dialogue and facilitating faith in higher education settings. Although the findings provide valuable insights, this study has limitations in terms of sample coverage and geographical area. Further research involving larger and more diverse samples from different countries or regions is expected to corroborate and expand the generalizability of these findings. Future research could also explore other factors that may influence the relationship between religiosity and tolerance among university students.

The study delves into the Quranic verses and teachings that emphasize patience as a virtue and its potential impact on mental health. Drawing from the rich Islamic tradition, the article examines the concept of "Sabr" (patience) and its multifaceted dimensions, including perseverance, endurance, and emotional resilience. Furthermore, it explores how these qualities can be cultivated and practiced in dealing with various mental health challenges. The method used in this research is a content analysis with data in the form of verses from the Qur’an, and some researches related to patience. The findings of this study contribute to the growing body of literature on the intersection of spirituality and mental health, showcasing how religious teachings can offer a unique and valuable perspective on coping with mental problems. Moreover, it underscores the significance of embracing patience as a holistic approach to foster emotional well-being and promote resilience in the face of life's challenges, as emphasized in the Quranic teachings. The results of this study are 1) the word patient in the Qur’an is described more than a hundred times which generally explains that patience means self-restraint, emotion, and surviving in difficult conditions; 2) mental problems that are often experienced by people are anxiety, stress, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and behavioral disorders; 3) patience can be one of the treatments for mental disorders through self-control, self-acceptance, and resilience. The article concludes with implications for future research and clinical practice in the realm of mental health, emphasizing the need for a more comprehensive and culturally sensitive approach to address mental health issues in diverse populations.

Abstract

Research on the analysis of KH. Faqih Maskumambang's thoughts on the prohibition of using the Kentongan as a prayer time marker from the perspective of the prophet's hadith needs to be conducted. The aim is to describe the understanding of hadith in the classical and contemporary eras. Kentongan is a tool commonly used by some people as a sign of prayer. The use of this tool is a part of the characteristics of Islam in the archipelago. Along with the development of knowledge, traditions have drawn the attention of many circles. The main reason for criticism and refutation is because the use of these tools is considered an act of bid'ah and resembles non-Muslim worship. Even the founding figure of the NU and KH. Hasyim Asy'ari was among those who opposed traditions. In this study, the author used a descriptive-qualitative method with a contextual approach. The primary source used the book Sharh Hazzu al-Ru'us fi Radd al-Jasus 'an Tahrim al-Naqus by KH. Faqih Maskumambang. The result of this study is that, according to KH. Faqih Maskumambang, the hadith used as the basis for the prohibition of the use of the horn is not valid. In fact, another Hadith refutes Hadith, which is more valid. In explaining this, Kyai Faqih took explanations from the Qur'an and Hadith, which have similar topics of discussion. He also takes the opinions of scholars and the methods of fiqh and logic as reinforcements.

Abstract

Understanding Islam poses a significant challenge for newly converted individuals and groups, underscoring the necessity of companionship and guidance to facilitate their learning and exploration of faith. Recognizing this imperative, the Indonesian Chinese Islamic Unity Institute (PITI) in Surabaya has initiated mentoring activities tailored specifically for new converts of Islam. Employing a persuasive communication approach between mentors and converts, the program aimed to deepen their understanding of faith. This study evaluated the effectiveness of persuasive communication in the development of conversion to Islam at the Indonesian Chinese Islamic Association Institute in Surabaya. Using qualitative research methods with a descriptive approach, in-depth interviews with key informants were conducted to gather data. The analytical framework is rooted in the AIDDA concept, encompassing Attention, Interest, Desire, Decision, and Action. The findings reveal that the Surabaya PITI Institute adeptly implements the AIDDA concept in the context of persuasive communication. Beginning with capturing converts' attention through the introduction of the ta'aruf program by da'i, the program proceeds to generate interest by delivering engaging and relevant content. The da'i employs a gentle and persuasive language when imparting Quranic teachings and avoiding coercion. As a result, converts make informed decisions to embrace Islamic practices such as regular prayer, zakat, and fasting, signifying a meaningful behavioral shift towards adherence to Islamic principles. Consequently, converts integrate the teachings presented by the da'i, prioritizing Islamic doctrines derived from the Quran and Hadith while gradually distancing themselves from conflicting Chinese cultural practices. This research provides insights into the role of persuasive communication in guiding converts and offers implications for the development of effective Da'wah strategies and approaches.

Abstract

In sociological contexts, the interaction between culture and religious content naturally reflects the dynamic nature of social phenomena, arising from the harmonization of societal norms and religious principles. The Cokaiba tradition exemplifies this intersection, blending cultural heritage with Islamic commemoration. This study utilizes a phenomenological approach to explore the significance of the Cokaiba tradition within Halmahera society in North Maluku, aiming to elucidate broader perspectives on the interplay between culture and religion. Through qualitative research rooted in phenomenology, this study investigates the dynamics of the Cokaiba tradition within the Fagogoru Community in Central Halmahera, North Maluku. Data collection involves immersive engagement with key informants, including religious figures, community leaders, practitioners of the tradition, and local residents, through interviews, observations, and documentation. Findings reveal the emergence of Cokaiba as a fusion of cultural heritage and Islamic celebration, embodying principles of monotheism and serving as a means to propagate Islam within the region. Despite diverse interpretations, the convergence of religion and culture within Cokaiba fosters harmonious coexistence, facilitating the integration of religious values with cherished cultural practices. However, limitations include the challenge of fully capturing individual experiences and perceptions with a phenomenological approach and the potential lack of generalizability due to the study's focus on the Fagogoru Community. Future research incorporating a broader range of perspectives and cultural contexts would enhance understanding of the intricate dynamics between religion and culture manifested in traditions like Cokaiba.
