Abstract

The availability of hot water energy sources in Pincara Village, North Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi Province, is a potential that must be developed as a source of electrical energy for the people in the village and surrounding villages. The existence of cheap energy sources will have an impact on improving the economy for villagers, most of whom make a living as farmers. In line with the development of industrial development in developing countries such as Indonesia where electrical energy is needed in increasing amounts of capacity, conventional sources of power generation (oil/gas) will not meet the required supply. Geothermal is an alternative to renewable energy sources other than biomass, hydro/wind/solar power, sea waves and nuclear power; which may be the main choice as a substitute for conventional/non-renewable energy sources. In connection with the direct use of geothermal energy sources that have low temperatures which are considered uneconomical, from these conditions, a technology is needed that is able to utilize geothermal energy sources that have low temperatures. One of the technological innovations for utilizing geothermal energy that has a low temperature is Organic Rankine Cycles. Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) which is a modification of the Rankine cycle by using refrigerant as a working fluid to produce electrical energy. This system consists of four main components, namely the evaporator, turbine, condenser, and pump. The working fluid is pumped into the evaporator to generate steam.

Abstract

Food security and sustainable cities and communities are issues of sustainable goals which are heavily influenced by the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic. The coastal settlements of the Tallo Subdistrict, which are mostly inhabited by people with a low economic class and work in the informal sector, cannot avoid the economic impact of post-COVID-19. The decline in people’s income has resulted in a decrease in spending on vegetable consumption. In addition, the conditions of dense coastal settlements and lack of green space make urban farming a solution that can be applied to solve the two problems that occur. This Community Service Program includes preparation, implementation and evaluation. The results achieved from this program are increasing community knowledge and understanding regarding urban farming. The harvest from the garden can be consumed by family members, thereby reducing spending on vegetables. It is hoped that in the future, the community will receive training related to how to process crops so that they can provide economic benefits for the local community.

Abstract

To ensure the quality of education in vocational schools (Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan or SMK), the government intervenes through the Skills Competency Test (Uji Kompetensi Keahlian or UKK). During the UKK process for SMK Budi Bangsa students in March 2018, it was found that the participants generally had not yet mastered the material to be tested, specifically the use of topographic mapping equipment. This is likely due to the insufficient availability of adequate facilities and infrastructure at SMK Budi Bangsa. Therefore, training on the use of topographic mapping equipment is necessary to better prepare SMK Budi Bangsa students for a similar exam the following year. The topographic mapping training, using auto level and theodolite tools, aims to enhance students' knowledge and skills in accordance with the equipment usage guidelines and refer to the Code 1556 Vocational Practice Exam Assessment Sheet. The topographic mapping training was conducted at SMK Budi Bangsa from January 29 to February 4, 2019. The method used involved theoretical presentations on topographic mapping in general and the specific use of auto level and theodolite tools, as well as practical exercises on the usage of these tools, measurement and data processing, and the creation of topographic maps. The training activities were attended by 27 students, consisting of 14 students from class X, 3 students from class XI, and 10 students from class XII. From only 7.4% of the participants who initially possessed the knowledge and skills according to the first two stages of the reference before the training, they achieved improvement, with all participants acquiring the knowledge and skills according to all stages of the planned reference.

Abstract

Craftsman group of earth brick at Ballaparang sub village, Panyyangkalang village of Bajeng Subdistrict in the Gowa Regency has long been produced bricks mainly for the construction materials in the Makassar City and Gowa. However, some problems arisen by the craftsman such as brick quality produced is crack easily and the brick maturity during firing is difficult to control. To solve the problem, it was performed the counseling activity with the aims at increasing the brick quality through firing test with controlled temperature and time. The compressive strength test was conducted and compared to the brick produced by craftsman. In addition, mineralogical and chemical testing of raw material was performed using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) methods respectively. Compressive strength test was carried out for both bricks produced by craftsman and brick fired in laboratory using Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) method. Testing results show that clay raw materials were composed of feldspar (plagioclase), quartz, illite, nacrite, and magnetite. Chemical testing exhibits that iron oxides (Fe2O3) is high so it is suggested to reduce the iron content in raw materials by using low-intensity magnetic separator. The implementation results of compressive strength produced by craftsman provide the average value of 3.03 MPa whereas brick fired in the laboratory give the minimum value of 5.09 Mpa which was achieved in 6 hour and 500oC firing. The contribution of this activity indicates the improvement of brick quality mainly compressive strength up to 59 %.

Abstract

The Gowa Regency as a node area that has been designated as one part of the Metropolitan City, an integrated city of Mamminasata, so that Gowa Regency has an important role as a sub-center for the development of Makassar City. The increase in traffic volume has led to transportation problems including queues of vehicles on several roads in the city of Sungguminasa. On several roads in Gowa Regency, there are more potential of congestion occurs because the modes of transportation that pass on these roads have exceeded over the available of road capacity. On the other hand, the distribution modes of transportation is uneven which causes overload capacity on several roads in Gowa Regency, especially Somba Opu District. The purpose of this activity is to analyze the trip assignment of the existing road network conditions and forecast for the next five years based on the existing road level of service values on each road segment according to the origin-destination distribution of trips using the Visum program application. Network assignment by overviewing the performance level of service of existing road network sections shows the classification of service on most road sections with levels A, B and C with indications of stable flow, with the speed is starting to be limited by traffic conditions. In forecasting conditions, it can be seen that the loading of the road network with its performance on most of the sections has decreased in service at levels D and E with indications that traffic is starting to be disrupted and speeds are slowing down. The results of the application of the Visum program in trip assignment for the existing road network with road service level values provide important information as an effort to determine strategies and efforts in mitigation to overcome transportation problems. Detailed level of road service in a road network on several existing road sections will provide an integrated information regarding the potential for diverting several heavy traffic flows in an effort to prevent potential congestion.

Abstract

The process of recycling plastic waste is one way of processing plastic waste. Plastic waste in the form of plastic bottles and cups has a high selling value when it is recycled. The Paraikatte Rong waste bank in Makassar City has been in the plastic waste processing business for 5 years. This waste bank only collects and sorts plastic waste due to the unavailability of plastic chopping machines that can help the plastic waste recycling process. Therefore, the Community Service Team of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Hasanuddin University, with the implementation of appropriate technology designed and built a plastic chopping machine for the Paraikatte Rong waste bank. The method used is to conduct training on the use and maintenance of a plastic chopping machine. The purpose of this service is for the waste bank to carry out the recycling process optimally and efficiently so as to increase the economic value of plastic waste. The scissor system for chopping plastic is applied to the chopping machine so that the chopping results are smoother. The chopping machine consists of 3 dynamic blades and 2 static blades which can be adjusted to the density of the blades. This machine has a capacity of 100 kg/hour using a 7.5 hp petrol engine. Abstract

Galesong Kota is one of the villages in Galesong District, Takalar Regency. Residents in Galesong Kota Village mostly work as fishermen, every day looking for fish across the sea for their survival. The community implements a capture fisheries system. One of the traditional capture fisheries businesses in Galesong Kota Village is called "Karya Bersama". Fishermen partners in Galesong village earn income from fishing which is still relatively low. The value of the fish caught is sometimes not enough to cover the operational costs and daily living expenses of the family. One of the reasons for the lack of fish catches is that fishing boat engines often suffer damage which causes fishermen to be unable to go out to sea. In addition, the knowledge and skills of partner fishermen regarding boat engine repair and maintenance techniques are still very minimal. In this service the methods used are interviews, socialization, and training held in the village of Galesong Kota. The interview method was carried out to find the main problems, followed by socialization and training methods to increase the knowledge and skills of fishermen to maintain boat engines with the Carbon Cleaner technique. The community's understanding and skills in solving problems increase or increase after the service process. And it is hoped that in the future fishing communities can implement their skills in maintaining and repairing machines independently so as to avoid losses caused by damage to the machine.

Abstract

Mathematics often becomes a less favored subject among elementary school students, including those at Inpres Borongrappo Elementary School in Gowa Regency, which is our partner in this Community Service activity. To address this issue, we have innovated by introducing an engaging learning medium in the form of a 3D miniature puzzle Bola Ugi’ implemented using the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) method. This educational program aims not only to enhance students' curiosity and creativity but also to sharpen their motor coordination skills. The educational program primarily focuses on creating two-dimensional shapes from cardboard, calculating the volume of three-dimensional objects, and exploring the cultural significance of 'mappatettong bola' and 'mappalette bola.' Additionally, students assemble and color the 3D puzzle Bola Ugi’. The evaluation of activities in the form of a questionnaire to determine students' interest in learning mathematics and becoming acquainted with culture, as well as test models to determine students' level of understanding of mathematics and culture, which are administered before (pre-test) and after (pre-test) the educational program, respectively. The questionnaire results revealed that 16 students were more excited about learning mathematics and 15 students were more enthusiastic about learning about culture. Meanwhile, the exam results reveal a considerable increase in the number of correct responses in each question, indicating that the instruction increased pupils' comprehension of mathematics and culture. The educational program employing the 3D puzzle Bola Ugi’ as learning method significantly enhances motivation and comprehension of mathematics, as evidenced by the improved test scores and questionnaire responses.
