International Journal of Visual and Performing Arts draws its contributions from academics and practitioner-researchers at the interface of new visual and performing arts. It acts as a forum for critical scholarship, innovative practice, and creative pedagogy, addressing themes that may be domain-specific (e.g. theatre, dance, music, live art, visual arts) or situated at the convergence of two or more disciplines. The journal invites original, significant, and rigorous inquiry into all subjects within or across disciplines related to visual and performing arts. It encourages debate and cross-disciplinary exchange across a broad range of approaches. The spectrum of topics includes Ethnomusicology, Karawitanology, Music Education, Dance Theatre, Movie and Television, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Media Arts, Fine Arts, Photography. These topics are addressed in full-length academic articles, critical statements on current issues, developmental practice, and reviews of books and live/media-based visual and performing arts. The journal presents an innovative platform for researchers, students, practitioners and educators to both learn from and contribute to the field. All articles are subject to initial Editor screening and then a rigorous double-blind peer-review process before publication.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning of the Dulang Dance. In this study, the method chosen is a qualitative descriptive method. The data collection process was carried out through observation, conversation, and document recording, aiming to explore the significance of the implied meaning in the Dulang Dance movements. This qualitative research is able to provide insight into the meaning contained in the Dulang Dance in Langkat. The findings of the study revealed that in the sembah movement when greeting the host of the event, each movement has its own symbolic value. Such as the contour of the sembah movement following the direction of the wind, and the low horse stance position that represents stability. In addition, the sitting position is similar to the tahyad prayer, but with the legs more open and not overlapping, expressing deep respect. The gentle movements in the martial art of silat, still contain strength and spirit, while the steps on the plate and the jumps onto the dulang have deep philosophical meanings. All of this symbolizes an expression of gratitude to the Creator, respect for respected individuals, as well as the values ​​of simplicity, humility, and respect for religion. The implication of the greeting to the steps on the stage, Dulang Dance expresses gratitude to Allah SWT while respecting the King or leader. For the future, the young generation can preserve the meaning of Dulang Dance.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the interest and motivation of students in learning arts and culture at State Senior High School 7 Pekanbaru. The research method used is a descriptive quantitative method. The data collection techniques used in the study are documentation, interviews, and the instrument in the form of a questionnaire. The population in this study were students of State Senior High School 7 Pekanbaru, and the research sample was class X students with the material Tanjak Warisan. The method used in learning arts and culture is project-based learning, which involves students designing, planning, and carrying out projects to produce products, publish, or present them. Results show interest and motivation in students at the School State Senior High School 7 Pekanbaru in the sufficient height category. This is based on the results of filling out the interest questionnaire with an average percentage of 81% and an average percentage for the results of the motivation questionnaire of 72%. In addition, in the summative assessment, the average student scored 90. From the interview results, it was found that the students follow a learning art culture. Because, like art lessons, they are enthusiastic about making or producing works of art, are interested in the uniqueness of local and regional arts (local wisdom), and feel comfortable with the way teachers teach in class and the provision of supporting facilities for learning art culture by the school. From the results of this study, there is information explaining that the learning method and teaching variations of teachers are one of the supporters of interest and motivation to learn in students. In addition, this study is expected to provide information on learning methods that educators can use in the classroom and an increase in teachers' awareness of the latest learning methods and teaching variations.

Abstract

This study addresses the limited creativity in art learning at Muhammadiyah 1 Vocational High School Kepanjen by developing and evaluating an Augmented Reality (AR)--based teaching module for embossing techniques. The research, conducted using the ADDIE model within a Research and Development (R&D) framework, involved 26 Grade X students majoring in Network Computer Engineering. It focused on enhancing specific aspects of creativity, including originality, technical skills, and conceptual understanding. Validation by media and material experts yielded high scores of 89.3% and 91.3%, respectively. The module's effectiveness was demonstrated through significant improvements in student outcomes, with an average post-test score of 85.43 compared to a pre-test score of 66.95. The AR module fosters an engaging and immersive learning experience by combining interactive multimedia elements, bridging traditional art techniques with modern technology. This research contributes to the advancement of vocational art education by promoting creativity and cultural heritage preservation through innovative digital tools.

Abstract

Natural dyes come from natural sources through certain processes used in several arts and crafts to produce environmentally friendly products. This research aims to conduct experiments on applying natural dyes to woven pandan products in Tipang Village, North Sumatra Province. This aim was to develop sustainable methods for woven pandan leaf products. The research method uses an experimental process with a practice-led research approach to applying natural dyes in the context of arts and crafts. Experimental samples were obtained by staining using a type of mordant group, namely tegeran and tingi wood extraction, as well as a container group from fermented tarum leaves (Indigofera). The number of samples used was 6, with 1 sample without color, two with tegeran wood dye, two with tingi wood, and 1 with arum leaves. The analysis and evaluation process uses visual analysis assisted by greyscale image assessment via the Matlab application. The findings show that the application of natural dyes of the mordant group with fixation using lime has a more intense and even color quality with an R.G.B value of around 0.5 - 0.6 or an index value of around 135 -143. Meanwhile, natural dyes in the vessel class have uneven colors, so further experiments must be conducted to produce good colors. Thus, natural dyes from the mordant group can be applied to woven products made from pandan leaves.

Abstract

The Salonreng dance represents the cultural identity of the Makassar tribe. Despite its rich cultural significance, Salonreng dance is rarely witnessed and in demand by the public, as well is a lack of deep understanding of the meaning and values contained in Salonreng dance. This study aims to analyze the performance structure and social meaning of Salonreng dance better to understand its role in the cultural context of Makassar. The research method used is qualitative with an ethnocoreological approach, considering the cultural setting of the Salonreng dance. Direct observation was carried out by attending ritual activities; selected informants included actors, panrita (ritual leaders), dancers, pinati (ritual equipment organizers), local artists, and traditional leaders. Data collection was carried out through documentation of Salonreng dance performances in the form of ritual videos, books, and journals. The study results show that the Salonreng dance is an important element of Makassar's cultural heritage, which has high aesthetic, social, and spiritual value. The findings include Salonreng dance movements, criteria for dancers who are considered spiritually clean, accompanying musicians, audiences, dancers' clothing, dance floor patterns, and the transformation of the performance venue. The contribution of this research includes the enrichment of academic literature and the provision of research methodologies that can be used as a reference that supports the preservation and development of the Salonreng dance so that it becomes an important part of Makassar's cultural heritage and develops in the future.

Abstract

Ethnomathematics is currently also a bridge for the emergence of new strategies in the mathematics learning process. The aim is to make mathematics easier to understand by finding cultural facts in everyday life, such as in the Gandrung Lombok dance. Until now, there has been no study of ethnomathematical analysis of the various movements of the Gandrung Lombok dance that can be used in the learning process. This research aims to explain the ethnomathematics aspects of various Gandrung Lombok dance movements. The research used a qualitative descriptive method with an ethnographic approach involving participant observation, interviews, and documentation. Interviews were conducted with maestros and performers to explain and describe various mathematical phenomena in various Gandrung Lombok dance movements. Then, the collected field data was analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach, and the validity of the data used in this research was tested using triangulation techniques. The research results explain that counting and measuring activities are performed in various Gandrung Lombok movements. Counting activities are carried out repeatedly by counting the numbers one to eight accompanied by accompanying music. Measurement activities in the presentation of Gandrung Lombok dance movements are implemented in the presentation of movement patterns, including hand, foot, and floor patterns. Ethnomathematics related to measurement is carried out by applying the geometric concepts of semicircles, circles, and triangles. The triangle concept is the most dominant concept in various Gandrung Lombok movements, which can be seen in the shape of the hand and foot patterns. One of the findings in this research explains that the concept of triangular geometry is an important element in building the aesthetic image of Gandrung Lombok, which needs further proof.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze how the choreography of the Laman Silat Dance, created by Sunardi, embodies the expression of Malay-Riau culture through a combination of Malay-Riau silat movements with 'contrast' choreographic techniques. Using a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods, data was collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation analysis. The analysis focuses on the elements of choreography, including movement, music, costume, makeup, floor design, and lighting, as creative expression. The research findings reveal that the Laman Silat Dance expresses Malay-Riau culture through silat movements, clothing, and Malay-Riau music. The ‘contrasting’ yet dynamic choreographic composition depicts Malay-Riau culture's ‘contrasting’ yet dynamic richness. The Malay-Riau musical instruments used, poetic narration, and energetic movements with accents on the shoulders, head, and hands enrich this dance's aesthetic and narrative dimensions. Thus making it a representation of the cultural expression of Malay-Riau silat. This research contributes to the academic discourse in performing arts by highlighting the role of choreography as an artistic expression of Malay-Riau culture. The strength of this study lies in its comprehensive analysis of artistic elements as cultural expression, which offers a foundation for understanding the balance between contrast in choreography and contemporary movement in Malay-Riau culture. In addition, this research opens up opportunities for future studies to explore the influence of the Laman Silat Dance on the younger generation, especially in terms of how this dance can instill pride and cultural awareness in the midst of globalization.

Abstract

This study analyzes the Malay ornaments in the Asserayah Al-Hasyimiyah Palace, Siak Sri Indrapura Regency, to uncover their visual forms and symbolic meanings. A qualitative descriptive approach combined with semiotic methods was employed to understand these ornaments' artistic elements, functions, and cultural values. The findings reveal that the palace's ornaments feature various motifs, including flora (jasmine, ylang-ylang, roses), fauna (dragon heads), Arabic calligraphy, and geometric patterns. Each ornament carries symbolic meanings that reflect Malay cultural values, such as honesty (mangosteen tree), noble character (a cluster of garden flowers), and honor (wall crown). Beyond their decorative function, these ornaments also serve as a medium of visual communication that embodies Malay cultural identity. This study underscores the importance of preserving traditional ornaments as cultural heritage while enhancing public understanding of Malay art. These findings are relevant for supporting arts and cultural education and enriching studies on traditional architecture.

Abstract

In the digital age, local Indonesian performing arts face both challenges and opportunities in terms of visibility and preservation. This research aims to analyze the characteristics of trending local Indonesian performing arts videos on the TikTok platform and to understand their demographics. The study employs a quantitative content analysis method to examine the representation and popularity of local Indonesian performing arts in trending TikTok videos. A sample of TikTok videos showcasing local dance, music, and theater from various regions of Indonesia was analyzed for themes and engagement metrics. The findings reveal that (1) Generation Z is the dominant force shaping the digital stage on TikTok, (2) performing arts creators are predominantly female, (3) local dance accompanied by a blend of traditional and modern music is a key strategy for high engagement on TikTok, (4) costumes have minimal impact on video engagement, (5) standard shooting and tilting are the most commonly used video styles, and (6) popular performing arts demographics are primarily from Java (West Java, East Java, and Yogyakarta). This research underscores the role of TikTok in revitalizing and disseminating local Indonesian performing arts while highlighting the implications for cultural preservation and audience engagement in the digital era.
