Abstract

Rice is a primary necessity for the Indonesian people, as it serves as a source of energy and carbohydrates. Rice cultivation requires strategic approaches to increase production, aiming to prevent threats to Indonesia's food security. One strategy that can be applied is the jajar legowo rice planting system. The jajar legowo system is a technique that manipulates planting distances to increase rice yields, resulting in a greater number of edge plants. This activity aims to enhance farmers' understanding of rice cultivation using the jajar legowo system to achieve better harvests and to boost their enthusiasm in working on their agricultural land. The activity was conducted on the rice fields owned by the Tanjung Raya farming group, located in Nagari Sungai Dareh, Pulau Punjung District, Dharmasraya Regency. The method employed involved directly practising the jajar legowo rice planting system in the farmers' rice fields. The activity proceeded smoothly, successfully increasing the farmers' understanding of *jajar legowo* rice cultivation to achieve better harvests. Both the farmers and students involved in the activity were able to perform their tasks according to the specified guidance. Abstract

The excessive and improper use of synthetic pesticides triggers ecosystem damage. The negative impacts of pesticide use can result in pest resistance, resurgence, the death of natural enemies, residue left on crop yields, and environmental pollution. Aside from the negative impacts on the environment, the use of synthetic pesticides burdens farmers due to their relatively high cost. Botanical pesticides become an alternative for controlling plant pests (Pests). Thus, a socialization on making botanical pesticides was conducted in Cubadak Air Village, North Pariaman Subdistrict, Pariaman City. The objective of creating botanical pesticides was to reduce the use of synthetic pesticides, decrease control costs, and maintain agricultural ecosystems. The botanical pesticide-making activity was carried out on July 19-20, 2023, in Cubadak Air Village, North Pariaman Subdistrict, Pariaman City. The method used was a direct demonstration of botanical pesticide production to farmer groups and the community in Cubadak Air Village. The results obtained after empowering the community in making botanical pesticides were that farmers could directly produce these pesticides, thereby aiding in the farmers' economy by reducing pesticide purchasing costs, utilizing wild plants like weeds to be used as botanical pesticides. The training on making botanical pesticides proceeded smoothly, and participants showed enthusiasm for the presented material. The use of environmentally friendly botanical pesticides, utilizing available natural resources, helps to maintain ecosystem balance.

Abstract

The need for energy, especially electricity, is fundamental and essential in daily life. This is particularly true for communities in rural areas that rely on fossil fuel-powered machines for their work, such as milling rice into flour. One such community is the farming group in Kampong Ngalau Randah, Solok Selatan, West Sumatra. This activity aims to realize the construction of a small-scale renewable energy technology building, specifically a pico-hydro power plant using a steel waterwheel that functions as both a power generator and a production machine/flour mill driver. The target partners for this activity are the residents of Kampung Ngalau Randah, Jorong Manggih, which is an isolated village in Kenagarian Pakan Rabaa Timur, Solok Selatan Regency, West Sumatra. The methods of this activity include surveys and experiments, starting with a potential survey at the partner's location followed by outreach, fabrication of the waterwheel components and assembly in the city of Padang, dismantling the old waterwheel at the partner's location, and transporting the new waterwheel unit to the partner's location, which is 180 km away. The outcome of this activity has successfully resulted in the construction and donation of a waterwheel unit for the local community. In the future, it is hoped that the development of this waterwheel-driven power plant in Kampung Ngalau Randah will serve as a pilot project that can inspire other village communities to build power plants in their respective areas.

Abstract

This community service activity takes the form of clinical coaching on agricultural waste management in raising goats/cattle which aims to transfer knowledge and improve skills regarding the management of agricultural waste processing such as rice straw as an alternative feed ingredient and the rice straw ammonization process. This activity also aims to increase public knowledge about management of the maintenance and processing of agricultural waste in the form of ammoniated rice straw, so that it can overcome difficulties in procuring animal feed. The method used in the coaching clinic is guidance on waste management using science and technology as well as practice or demonstration of making straw ammonia. This activity was carried out through several stages, namely socialization & coaching clinic about goat/cattle farming, animal feed ingredients and making straw ammonization. This activity received a very positive and enthusiastic response from members and succeeded in providing an understanding of solutions to feed difficulties in the dry season. Apart from that, the ammoniated rice straw that had been produced was tried to be given to livestock and the results were very clearly liked by cattle. This shows that ammoniated straw is preferred by cattle because the nutritional content of rice straw that has been processed using the ammonia process can be used as an alternative feed. The raw material for rice straw is easy to obtain in West Bungus Village, Teluk Kabung Subdistrict, so that every farmer can carry out rice straw ammonia processing using simple technology with optimal results. Rice straw that has been processed can reduce production costs so that it will improve the community's economy
