Abstract

Adolescents with intellectual disabilities are a vulnerable group who often face barriers in accessing comprehensive reproductive health education. Limited communication skills, difficulty understanding abstract concepts, and social stigma hinder their ability to gain adequate knowledge, increasing the risk of sexual exploitation, early pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections. Digital innovations have shown promise, yet cloud-based platforms tailored to this population remain limited. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Reproductive Health Interactive System (REPRODIS), a cloud-based, interactive web platform, in improving adolescents with intellectual disabilities' reproductive health knowledge. A quasi-experimental one-group pre-test–post-test design was conducted with 30 adolescents aged 13–18 years with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities in a special needs school in Central Java, Indonesia. Participants completed a validated reproductive health knowledge questionnaire before and after four REPRODIS sessions delivered twice weekly over two weeks. The platform included simplified text, audio-visual animation, voice guidance, interactive quizzes, and parental monitoring features. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test with a significance level of 0.05. The mean knowledge score increased significantly from 46.3±8.2 (pre-test) to 73.5±7.9 (post-test) (p=0.001). More than 83% of participants improved by ≥20 points. Observations indicated higher engagement during REPRODIS sessions compared to conventional lectures, while parents reported greater confidence in discussing reproductive health at home. REPRODIS significantly improved reproductive health knowledge among adolescents with intellectual disabilities. This innovation demonstrates the potential of cloud-based interactive platforms as inclusive educational tools.

Abstract

Post-stroke sensorimotor disorders are the leading cause of long-term disability in adults. The purpose of this research was to analyze the combined effect of tactile stimulation and active-assisted exercise on upper-extremity motor function and functional activity in post-stroke patients at Physio Dahsyat Home Care. A Quasi-Experimental Design was used with purposive sampling. Thirty participants were divided into two groups: Group A, a combination of tactile stimulation and active assisted exercise; and Group B, electrical stimulation and PNF. The average scores of FMA-UE and CAHAI-8 in Group A were 16.33 to 60.13 and 14.80 to 52.73. In Group B, the average score was 13.40 to 48.07 and 13.40 to 44.87. Paired t-tests showed p-values<0.001 for both Group A and Group B, indicating a significant effect in both groups. An independent test showed a significant. <0.001, indicating a comparison of the impact on motor function and functional activity of the upper extremity. The highest average scores for motor function and functional activity in Group A were 60.13 and 52.73. A combination of tactile stimulation and active-assisted exercise was more effective, leading to increased muscle strength through motor unit activation; the more motor units involved, the greater the increase in muscle strength.

Abstract

Anemia in pregnancy is a significant public health concern that contributes to maternal morbidity, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and neonatal complications. This study aimed to analyze the effects of the interpregnancy interval and adherence to iron–folic acid (IFA) tablet use on the incidence of anemia among pregnant women. A cross-sectional analytic survey was conducted in Tanjung Sari District, Lampung, Indonesia, involving 114 pregnant women selected through purposive random sampling from a total population of 334, including pregnant women aged 18–45 years in the first or second trimester, with at least one previous pregnancy, complete ANC records, and willingness to participate. Data were collected through structured questionnaires, anthropometric measurements, and documentation review. Anemia was assessed based on hemoglobin levels, while interpregnancy interval and IFA adherence were measured using standardized tools. Bivariate analysis was performed using the chi-square test, and multivariate analysis employed logistic regression to identify predictive factors. Results revealed that 40.4% of respondents were anemic. Pregnant women with an interpregnancy interval of less than 24 months were more likely to experience anemia compared to those with an interval of 24 months or more (p = 0.002). In addition, poor adherence to IFA tablet consumption was strongly associated with a higher prevalence of anemia (p<0.001). Logistic regression confirmed both interpregnancy interval and IFA adherence as significant predictors of anemia. Maintaining an optimal interpregnancy interval and improving adherence to IFA supplementation are critical strategies to prevent anemia during pregnancy.

Abstract

Low nutritional intake and knowledge among mothers during pregnancy are important factors that influence the occurrence of KEK and the risk of stunting. Efforts to increase knowledge are usually carried out through posyandu counseling or information media. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of e-booklets on pregnant women's knowledge of balanced nutrition. The research method included a pre-experimental pre-test and post-test (single-group pretest-posttest design) with 21 pregnant women selected via incidental sampling from a population of 31. The measurement tool used a questionnaire consisting of 35 questions, with a calculated r value of 0.369-0.784 and a Cronbach's Alpha of 0.91. The data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test because they were not normally distributed. The test results showed a p-value of 0.001, indicating that the e-booklet was effective in improving pregnant women's knowledge of balanced nutrition. Future researchers should conduct further randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to test the effectiveness of e-booklets, using a control group and a larger sample size, or to evaluate their impact on nutritional behavior/practices.

Abstract

Emergency healthcare services play a crucial role in patient survival, particularly in emergency departments (ED) where timely and accurate decision-making is vital. This study aims to analyze the personal, behavioral, and environmental factors that influence the accuracy of patient management in emergency departments, using the Social Cognitive Theory framework. An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted among 107 emergency nurses from all hospitals in Toraja, selected using total sampling. Independent variables included personal, behavioral, and environmental aspects, while the dependent variable was patient management accuracy. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire and analyzed through univariate, bivariate, and multivariate linear regression using statistical application. The study was approved by the Health Research Ethics Committee (Approval No: 0723419/EC/KEPK/I/05/2025). Results indicated an R-squared value of 0.502, suggesting that 50.2% of the variance in patient management accuracy could be explained by the three independent variables. Multivariate analysis revealed that the behavioral factor had the most significant influence (p=0.000; B=0.567). Behavioral factors play the most significant role in determining the accuracy of patient management in emergency departments, followed by environmental and personal factors. Strengthening clinical skills, teamwork, and adherence to protocols is essential to improving emergency care outcomes. Hospitals should prioritize continuous training, competency-based evaluations, and supportive work environments to enhance behavioral performance among emergency nurses. Future research is recommended to employ longitudinal designs to understand causal pathways better and to include broader healthcare roles beyond nursing.

Abstract

Premature and low birth weight babies are at risk of hypothermia admission, which is estimated at 39.8% of babies who arrive at the hospital shortly after referral. The handling of referral transfers of premature and low-birth-weight infants applies the principles of thermal care and comfort to maintain normothermia. This study aimed to evaluate the management of hypothermia in premature and low birth weight infants using a combination of plastic bags and swaddles. Controlling hypothermia admissions in infant transfer cases. The study used a nonequivalent control group design. The population in this study is premature and low birth weight infants. A total of 20 respondents were selected using the consecutive sampling technique. The research instrument was a hypothermia management observation sheet. The analysis used the T-test. The results showed a significant difference in body temperature between groups (p=0.000); there was a significant difference in body temperature between before and after (intervention p=0.002; control p=0.568). The combination of a plastic bag and a swaddle is safe to use in maintaining normal baby temperature during referral. This intervention is cost-effective, simple, and highly relevant, especially in facilities with limited resources.

Abstract

A study showed malnutrition, encompassing both obesity and undernutrition, is a serious metabolic condition that leads to health complications, including kidney injury. Probiotics have been proposed as a potential adjuvant therapy to improve compensatory kidney function. However, research on the effects of probiotic intervention on kidney morphological changes across different nutritional statuses remains limited. This exploratory pilot study involved 24 male isogenic Sprague Dawley rats (n=24; 7-8 weeks old), which were divided into six groups (n=4): undernourished (KU), undernourished-probiotics (KU-P), normal (KN), normal-probiotics (KN-P), obese (KO), and obese-probiotics (KO-P). The rats underwent a 10-day dietary period, followed by a 44-day treatment period, and were terminated on day 45. The kidneys were then extracted and weighed using an analytical scale. Kidney weight data were analyzed using a non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by post hoc Dwass-Steel-Critchlow-Fligner (DSCF) tests. Findings revealed a significant difference in kidney weight among the groups (p=0.001), with a substantial effect size. Descriptive trends showed that the obese (KO) group had the highest kidney weights, while the undernourished (KU) group had the lowest. The normal-probiotic group (KN-P) showed a trend toward increased kidney weight compared with the undernourished group (KU); however, conservative pairwise comparisons did not reach statistical significance (p>0.05) due to the limited sample size. Nutritional status is the primary factor influencing kidney weight. While probiotics demonstrated a corrective effect on kidney morphology in the normal group, their supplementation efficacy requires further evaluation, particularly in undernourished and obese conditions.
