Abstract

The illness known as asthma is typified by persistent inflammation of the airways involving  various types of mediators and inflammatory cells that are interrelated and cause changes in the shape and structure of the airways. One method of treating asthma is balloon blowing therapy. The aims of this study was to examine the effect of ballon blowing therapy on respiratory rete and oxygen saturation in asthma patients undergoing treatment at Grandmed Hospital, Lubuk Pakam. This quasi experimental study used one group pretest-posttest design. Data collection was conducted using purposive sampling. The baloon blowing exercise intervention was administered to 23 asthma sufferers undergoing reatment at Grandmed Hospital, Lubuk Pakam. Data collection was conducted using observation sheets and an intervention, namely ballon blowing, was administered to asthma patients undergoing treatment. Oxygen saturation and respiratory rate measurements were conducted twice : before and after the balloon blowing intervention. The results were recorded on the observation sheets. From the statistical test conducted using the paired test, the p value was 0,000 for the respiration rate and oxygen saturation values p < α (0,000 < 0,05). These results indicated that there was increase in oxygen saturation and better respiration rates in asthma patients undergoing treatment before and after balloon blowing intervention. It is hoped that patients suffering from asthma can do balloon blowing so that the oxygen saturation and respiration rates increase.

Abstract

Body posture can be impaired when daily activities are performed in non-ergonomic positions, resulting in uneven load distribution throughout the body. One of the most common postural disorders found in adolescents is a forward-leaning head position, known as forward head posture. This condition can be corrected through appropriate exercises, such as scapular stabilization exercises, which aim to improve scapular positioning and enhance stability and alignment in the cervical region, as well as McKenzie neck exercises, which focus on correcting neck posture. This study aims to determine the effect of scapular stabilization exercises and McKenzie neck exercises on increasing the craniovertebral angle in adolescents aged 13–15 years with forward head posture at SMP Muhammadiyah 16 Lubuk Pakam in 2025. The study employed a quasi-experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test approach. The interventions were administered twice a week for four weeks, with a total of eight sessions. Measurements were conducted using a goniometer. The results showed that the mean craniovertebral angle before the intervention was 45.00 with a standard deviation of 1.414, and after the intervention, it increased to 47.43 with a standard deviation of 1.604. Data analysis using the paired sample t-test revealed a p-value of 0.000, which is smaller than α = 0.05, indicating a significant difference between pre- and post-intervention measurements. Therefore, it can be concluded that scapular stabilization exercises and McKenzie neck exercises have an effect on improving the craniovertebral angle in adolescents aged 13–15 years with forward head posture at SMP Muhammadiyah 16 Lubuk Pakam in 2025

Abstract

Primary dysmenorrhea is a condition that may reduce adolescents’ quality of life, as it can interfere with daily activities and increase the risk of absenteeism from school or work. The management of this condition remains suboptimal, as most adolescents tend to rely on analgesic medications, while the long-term use of chemical drugs is associated with potential adverse effects, including disorders of the gastrointestinal system, kidneys, and liver. Therefore, safer alternative therapies are needed, one of which is the use of natural ingredients such as cinnamon and honey. This study aimed to analyze the effect of administering a cinnamon infusion combined with honey on the intensity of primary dysmenorrhea pain in adolescents. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design using a pretest-posttest control group design was employed. The study population consisted of 60 students experiencing primary dysmenorrhea, with a sample of 38 respondents selected using purposive sampling technique. Data analysis was performed using the independent sample t-test with a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). The results showed a significant effect of administering a cinnamon infusion combined with honey on reducing primary dysmenorrhea pain in adolescents (p < 0.001). In conclusion, a cinnamon infusion combined with honey was proven to be effective in reducing primary dysmenorrhea pain; therefore, healthcare providers, particularly midwives, as well as schools are recommended to promote this intervention as an alternative management for dysmenorrhea pain in adolescents.

Abstract

Carcinoma mammae is a malignant condition of breast tissue characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of abnormal cells that form tumors, which may metastasize to other organs and become life-threatening if not properly treated. Cancer cells generally originate from the milk-producing lobules or the breast ducts. Mastectomy, as a primary therapeutic intervention, often leads to significant physical changes that can affect patients’ body image and self-confidence. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between body image and self-confidence among post-mastectomy carcinoma mammae patients. This research employed a quantitative approach with a survey design using questionnaires. The sample consisted of 51 respondents selected through a total sampling technique at Grandmed Hospital Lubuk Pakam. The frequency distribution results indicated that the majority of respondents had a positive body image perception, with 48 individuals (94.1%) agreeing and 3 individuals (5.9%) disagreeing. Meanwhile, the level of self-confidence among respondents was also relatively high, with 44 individuals (86.3%) agreeing and 7 individuals (13.7%) disagreeing. Statistical analysis using the chi-square test revealed a significant relationship between body image and self-confidence (p-value = 0.84; α < 0.05), indicating that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. These findings highlight the importance of effective body image management in enhancing patients’ self-confidence. Therefore, psychological interventions such as counseling, psychoeducation, and peer support are essential to facilitate patients’ adaptation and self-acceptance following mastectomy.

Abstract

Stroke patients frequently experience dysphagia due to impairment of the glossopharyngeal, vagus, and hypoglossal nerves, which consequently reduces swallowing function. Shaker exercise has been shown to improve swallowing disorders through isometric and isokinetic training that enhances the strength of the suprahyoid muscles in the neck via upward (elevation) and forward (protrusion) movements. This study aimed to analyze the effect of Shaker exercise therapy on dysphagia in stroke patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Grandmed Hospital Lubuk Pakam. This study employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test method. A total of 11 stroke patients were recruited using a total sampling technique. Dysphagia levels were measured before and after the administration of the Shaker exercise intervention. Data analysis was conducted using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test and the Paired T-test with a significance level of 0.05. The results indicated that prior to the intervention, the majority of respondents were in the low score category (20–80), accounting for 7 individuals (63.6%), while 4 respondents (36.4%) were in the high score category (81–100). Following the intervention, all respondents (100%) were classified in the high score category (81–100), with no participants remaining in the low category. The Paired T-test revealed a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference in dysphagia conditions before and after the intervention. In conclusion, Shaker exercise is significantly effective in reducing dysphagia among stroke patients. This improvement is attributed to the strengthening of the suprahyoid muscles, which enhances the opening of the esophageal sphincter and facilitates the passage of food into the lower digestive tract.

Abstract

Stunting is a public health problem caused by chronic malnutrition, particularly during the first 1,000 days of life (HPK). Maternal factors such as knowledge, attitudes, and behavior play a crucial role in stunting prevention efforts through appropriate feeding practices and utilization of health services. This quantitative research design employed a descriptive correlational approach and cross-sectional methods. The study location was the Kasih Ibu Galang Clinic, Deli Serdang Regency. The sample consisted of mothers with children aged 6–24 months, with 51 respondents selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data collection was conducted using a questionnaire. The results showed that 39.21% of respondents had good knowledge, 76.47% had positive attitudes, and 70.58% demonstrated good stunting prevention behaviors. Statistical analysis revealed a strong and significant relationship between knowledge and behavior (r=0.862; p=0.001) and between attitudes and behavior (r=0.727; p=0.002). There is a significant relationship between knowledge and attitudes during the first 1000 days of life (HPK) and stunting prevention behaviors. Improved health education and ongoing support are essential to support optimal feeding practices and reduce stunting prevalence.
