Abstract

Within the last 20 years, TED has become an influential platform that provides knowledge and education by directing speakers on giving motivational speeches. This paper aims to analyze gender attitudes while delivering the speech and how they influence the audience. This study applied a descriptive qualitative method by using Synthetic Personalization by Fairclough (2001) and a Social-semiotic approach by Van Leeuwen (2008) to the selected TED videos to analyze the data and corpus linguistics, namely AntConc, as the tool to analyze the vocabularies, first-person and second-person concordances presented. The findings show 1.101 vocabularies used by men and 1.156 vocabularies that denote synthetic personalization used by women. Although the strategies they used are different, men’s and women’s speeches have successfully influenced the audience by immersing synthetic personalization to bring intimate, engagement, and personal relationships towards the mass audience by bringing up the feeling of ‘similarity’. The social-semiotic covers social distance and social interaction between men and women toward the audiences. Women are more socially considerate while men are more direct in their speech. The distance and interactions are subjected as a form of representation of closeness.

Abstract

The Batang Palupuh forest, part of the rimbo gadang (high forest) in Nagari Koto Rantang, Palupuh sub-district, has been part of a natuurmonument (nature reserve) since the Dutch colonial era to protect rare plant species. Long before it was designated as a nature reserve, the people of Koto Rantang with their local wisdom, had been protecting and caring for the forest for centuries. The method used was qualitative with an ethnoscience approach. The results show that the local knowledge of the community understands that the land in their area consists of rimbo gadang, paddy fields, parak, and fields. To utilise each land, especially for rice fields, parak, and ladang they have been guided by local knowledge, starting from determining the land, and the process of planting both long and short-term crops. And, since the management of the forest by the village authority in 2018, it has been developed with the tourism village programme of raflesia village, luak coffee, and rendang variants to domestic and foreign tourists.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the subject-object position and readers’ position in reporting on women as victims of sexual harassment that were built by mass media Detik.com. The design of this study is descriptive-qualitative study. The data of this study are all e-news about sexual harassment cases which published by Detik.com starting 1st January to 31st December 2021. Data was collected by using corpus-based method and corpus tools (SketchEngine and AntConc) as research instrument. Data, then, was analyzed using the CACDA or the combination of corpus linguistic and critical discourse analysis. The results of this study are: (1) ‘the police’ were more dominantly positioned as subjects in the news report (4 datas), while the most dominant position of the object is occupied by the ‘the perpetrator of sexual harassment’ (4 datas). 3 datas, among all 5 datas, marginalized women as the victims of sexual harassment through the word construction, whereas the other 2 datas showed the author’s side with the victims. (2) on 1 data, the authors combined the mediation and cultural code processes, while on 4 other datas the authors used only the mediation process. Though most of the the readers’ comments were accusing and blaming the perpetrator, yet some of them still marginalized women. The novelty of this study is the implementing Sara Mill’s critical discourse analysis on CACDA method.

Abstract

Discussion of docile bodies has been absent in film analysis. Most research is attracted to study gender representation in which women are frequently underrepresented. Thus, this study aims to examine the documentary film of Wido, a female artist, through Michel Foucault's theory of docility. This research is attracted to Widowati's narration as a Javanese woman artist who must be able to manage between her profession as an artist and a housewife respectfully. The data are the narration and scenes of Wido as both a female artist and a housewife in the documentary movie “Wido”. All data obtained are analysed textually, applying Foucault's notion of docile bodies. The research argues that the representation of Wido challenges the notion of docile bodies. Despite Widowati still glorifying her domestic roles, the feminine prescription of which women should be responsible for domestic chores, she subsequently exchanges the domestic responsibility with her husband to work in public as an artist. She also acknowledges that she is the family's breadwinner without diminishing her husband's primary responsibility as the head of the family. The fluidity of gender roles she performs contradicts the notion of docile bodies in which women are always taught and supervised to glorify their femininity.

Abstract

The future generation must have insight and practice local cultural knowledge in the era of globalization. The study aims to illustrate the representation of folklore as builders of the early cultural conservation spirit. The research data is an anthology of South Kalimantan folklore by H. Fahrurazie et al. UPT published by Taman Budaya Kalimantan Selatan in collaboration with Pustaka Banua publisher in 2013. The research method is qualitative descriptive—documentation and observation research techniques. The research steps are observation, determination of data sources, data collection, data selection, data analysis, conclusions, and presentation of data. The results showed that the representation of folklore has the practice of local wisdom, including a) knowledge of natural phenomena; b) practice in finding a source of life in the form of farming, gardening, and fishing; c) the practice of using living technologies and equipment; and d) practice of moral values in the literary arts.  The conclusion is the source of insight and knowledge of wisdom, one of which is through folklore. Stakeholders, such as families, schools, and governments, play a role in providing oral and written literacy materials so that children get to know the culture early on.

Abstract

In contemporary art, aesthetics serves as a medium for conveying complex societal and cultural messages. One artist who has masterfully harnessed this power is Mufti Priyanka (Amenk). His body of work is characterized by a unique and intriguing “grotesque aesthetics” that delves into various dimensions of everyday life. Through his art, Amenk provokes profound inquiries into the intricacies of our social realities. This research is dedicated to unraveling the aesthetics intricately woven into Amenk’s artworks, which seemingly offer genuine insights into the collective consciousness of a society grappling with the complexities of social norms and cultural identity. This study adopts a qualitative approach, examining Amenk diverse portfolio, encompassing paintings and graphics. Anchored in the framework of Derrida’s Deconstruction theory (1967), this approach involves a textual analysis, dissecting the conceptual distinctions that form the foundation of the text. By unveiling the inconsistencies and paradoxes inherent in the utilization of these concepts, the research sheds light on the intricate tapestry of Amenk’s artwork. Ultimately, Amenk’s body of work represents more than an exploration of cultural significance; it stands as a bold challenge to established norm, values, and even the truths.

Abstract

This paper attempts to discuss the ongoing Trauma of slavery as the collective Trauma for African American people in the US. It not only investigates the memory of Trauma experienced by the main character, Dana, in the novel Kindred but also describes how the author recalls the memory of the traumatic event and expresses it in the novel through a series of events the main character encountered. Although the traumatic event itself has long gone in the past, the memory of it still haunts the African American people through what Dana is going through. The narrative technique Butler uses in the novel is intriguing that she tells the story as some time machine where the main character can go back and forth from the setting of time, the 1970s, to the 19th-century slavery era. Furthermore, Dana experienced a physical injury that was incomprehensible for people in the 1970s to see as a result of the event that happened in the 19th-century slavery era. This can be seen as a reflection of the way African American people feel about slavery and the aftermath of it in the present. The traumatic event has passed, but the pain stays the same because ongoing racism against African American people remains.
