Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Bandung thrives as a city deeply entrenched in its artistic progression, boasting a vibrant array of art institutions, galleries, collectives, and accolades in the axis of Indonesian contemporary art. Despite this flourishing landscape, the divergence of contemporary art from conventional aesthetics poses challenges in garnering public appreciation. Since the early 2000s, Bandung’s contemporary art scene has witnessed a proliferation of innovative expressions influenced by recent aesthetic philosophies, notably postmodernism, and characterized by diverse aesthetic idioms. However, despite these progressive strides, a notable gap persists between contemporary art in Bandung and its local community. This study utilizes qualitative methodologies, including Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and visual analysis, to probe the aesthetic nuances within Bandung’s contemporary art milieu. FGD sessions delve into aesthetic dialogues, institutional dynamics, and community perceptions, while visual analysis deciphers cultural symbols within socio-political contexts. The findings illuminate prevalent themes of parody, pastiche, kitsch, and cultural fusion, indicative of a profound exploration of Indonesian identity amidst the currents of globalization. Bandung young contemporary artists adeptly interweave traditional values with contemporary themes, infusing their works with tradition, religion, and locality elements. While defying rigid categorization, these creations unveil intriguing intersections deserving further scholarly inquiry. This research underscores Bandung’s contemporary art scene as a complex and diverse tapestry shaped by historical, political, and social dynamics. It emphasizes the importance of discursive meaning and social processes within the artistic medium, shedding light on the intricate interplay between artistic innovation and socio-cultural contexts within Bandung’s vibrant art landscape.

Abstract

Rumah Gadang is a traditional house of the Minangkabau tribe. Traditional houses are a wealth of objects that can be used as tourism objects. The famous Rumah Gadang Istano Basa Pagaruyung in West Sumatra was formerly the center of government of the Pagaruyung kingdom and became the residence of the royal family. Now this Gadang House is a cultural heritage asset for the Minangkabau tribe and has changed its function as a museum. It's a shame that the prestige of the museum, which is full of history, is getting less and less well-known, as can be seen from visits that only make it a location for selfies without going into and studying the collections contained in the museum. Therefore, a storyboard will be made that introduces the Kingdom of Pagaruyung. Qualitative method research was conducted to find visual ideas that could be adopted as the basis for the design. Data collection used interviews and direct observation. The findings were also strengthened by a literature study targeting youth in West Sumatra. This design is expected to continue into an animated film. Keywords: Pagaruyung Kingdom, Istano Basa Pagaruyung, Storyboard animation

Abstract

In contemporary art, aesthetics serves as a medium for conveying complex societal and cultural messages. One artist who has masterfully harnessed this power is Mufti Priyanka (Amenk). His body of work is characterized by a unique and intriguing “grotesque aesthetics” that delves into various dimensions of everyday life. Through his art, Amenk provokes profound inquiries into the intricacies of our social realities. This research is dedicated to unraveling the aesthetics intricately woven into Amenk’s artworks, which seemingly offer genuine insights into the collective consciousness of a society grappling with the complexities of social norms and cultural identity. This study adopts a qualitative approach, examining Amenk diverse portfolio, encompassing paintings and graphics. Anchored in the framework of Derrida’s Deconstruction theory (1967), this approach involves a textual analysis, dissecting the conceptual distinctions that form the foundation of the text. By unveiling the inconsistencies and paradoxes inherent in the utilization of these concepts, the research sheds light on the intricate tapestry of Amenk’s artwork. Ultimately, Amenk’s body of work represents more than an exploration of cultural significance; it stands as a bold challenge to established norm, values, and even the truths.

Abstract

Recontextualization is a dynamic process aimed at bringing traditional concepts to life in a modern context, making them more accessible and relevant to today's audience. By adapting cultural artifacts into contemporary forms, this approach ensures that valuable traditions remain vibrant and engaging. One such tradition is the Parang Rusak Barong batik from the Yogyakarta Palace (Keraton Yogyakarta), a restricted pattern (batik larangan) that carries deep cultural significance. Batik larangan are batik patterns forbidden for common use. While its beauty is undeniable, the values and meanings it holds risk being lost if confined only to royal circles. To prevent this, the author has chosen to recreation the Parang Rusak Barong motif as animated character, enabling it to reach and resonate with a broader audience, particularly younger generations. This character will play a central role in "Mira and the Batik Fairy 2," an animated series that delves into the theme of restricted batik motifs. The research explores how traditional visual elements of batik can be transformed into animated characters. Using a qualitative method that combines observation and literature review, the study ultimately results in the creation of a character named Wasis, designed to embody the cultural essence of the Parang Rusak Barong batik in a form that appeals to modern viewers.
