Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the use of social strategies in English as A Foreign Language (EFL) learning. This was inspired by the learning condition that has been changing from face-to-face atmosphere to the online-based due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This changing situation requires teachers and students to be more aware of applying suitable strategies in online learning mode, especially social strategies. Using the descriptive qualitative approach, this study was conducted on the fourth semester EFL students in a private university. To elicit the required data, set of online questionnaires was disseminated to 50 participants to obtain information on social strategies use in online EFL learning. The result of the descriptive analysis showed that average students exhibited a high frequency of using social strategies in their learning processes. In asynchronous learning, students preferred doing ‘collaboration and discussion’ to assess their completed task. The strategies of ‘using tools to improve interaction and communication as well as asking for clarification’ were more influential in synchronous learning in which technology effected the use of social strategies in the online class participation. Therefore, it becomes crystal clear that social strategies are deemed effective to aid online EFL learning. Further suggestions regarding the use of social strategies are also accessible at the end of this article.

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this article is to construct evidence-based arguments on what comprehension is and what are various instructional approaches to improve comprehension post the National Reading Panel’s (NRP) report (2000). The NRP (2000) reported seven text comprehension instructions that have scientific evidences in improving reading comprehension. Those instructions are: (1) comprehension monitoring, (2) cooperative learning, (3) graphic and semantic organizers, (4) question answering, (5) question generation, (6) summarization, and (7) multiple strategies. It has been more that 20 years since the NRP reviewed empirical evidences of those text comprehension instructions. What have we learnt since then? Having reviewed 29 studies on comprehension instruction published in the past twenty years, we found top three comprehension instructions that are used in elementary classroom. They are: (1) differentiated/individualized reading instruction, (2) vocabulary-based reading instruction, and (3) transactional approach. These findings informed us that further research on elementary reading comprehension instruction needed. Also, the NRP categorization of comprehension instruction (2000) needs modification.

Abstract

Teaching English for children with mental retardation of course is a challenging experience. Even for the professional teacher, it is a challenge to teach English for children with mental retardation. This become an issue that teacher must provide good explanation especially the media. Media is considered as an important thing when teacher teach. The writer noticed this when I had an observation in SLB (School for Children with Special Need) Aisyiyah Tulangan. The observation conducted on 17, 18, 24 November and 1 & 2 December 2021. Observations were carried out in the special SMPLB class for mentally retarded children. SLB Aisyiyah Tulangan still lacks of media for learning, especially for English. As previously stated, English is a local content which is not taught in schools every day. The school also does not have a special module for learning English. English is only taught when the teacher wants to teach English, the rest of the teachers are free to provide any material for students. The module for students is only limited to practice questions that are made independently by the teacher according to the existing curriculum, there are no supporting books such as textbooks for students. This is the weakness for this school, the lack of support from the school foundation to support learning in schools, even though the teachers have given their best for the students.

Abstract

Abstract: A student's ability to develop essential competencies and attitudes will not be fostered by the use of the traditional educational techniques now used. As a result, teaching methods that engage students in the learning process and encourage them to address real-world issues should be employed in the teaching of Social Science Learning. Teaching social science may benefit from the use of social science authentic learning in this setting. In addition, students are delighted with their education in this manner. We are thus interested in hearing from both students and teachers about their experiences with social science authentic learning in Social Science.
