Abstract

This study explores how the principles of Total Quality Management (TQM) are internalized and interpreted as Total Quality Character Education (TQCE) within pesantren life. Using an autoethnographic method, the researchers reflect on personal experiences as a student and administrator in two Indonesian pesantren, examining the formation of character through daily discipline, peer leadership, and symbolic guidance from the kyai. The data were gathered through reflexive journaling, document analysis, and embedded interactional notes, then analyzed using Spradley’s 12-step ethnographic framework. The research revealed that TQCE is not only a character education model but also a lived culture grounded in ritual consistency (standardization), collective governance (peer accountability), and moral exemplarity (kyai leadership). Routines such as tahajjud, musyawarah, and muhasabah served as formative practices shaping discipline and responsibility. Peer mentoring fostered collective responsibility, while the kyai’s symbolic leadership became the spiritual anchor guiding values and behaviors. This study concludes that TQCE integrates the procedural strength of TQM with the spiritual-cultural fabric of pesantren, offering a sustainable framework for holistic character formation.

Abstract

The challenges of contemporary education in Indonesia present a compelling case for transforming traditional supervision approaches, particularly in addressing the socio-emotional dimensions of teacher competence. This qualitative case study explores the implementation of TIRTA (Tujuan, Identifikasi, Rencana Aksi, Tanggung Jawab= Objectives, Identification, Plan Action, Responsibility) coaching techniques in academic supervision to enhance teachers' personal and social competencies at SMA Negeri 5 Bengkulu Selatan. The study employed semi-structured interviews with 23 participants comprising three supervisors, 15 teachers, and five students, alongside participant observations and document analysis conducted over eight months. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis and the Miles-Huberman interactive model. Findings reveal a significant paradigmatic transformation from hierarchical control to collaborative empowerment. The result indicated a 63.5% average increase in teachers' personal and social competencies. The TIRTA model proved effective as a structured yet flexible framework, with collaboration and interpersonal communication demonstrating the highest improvements of 1.9 and 1.8 points respectively. The study demonstrates that coaching-based supervision creates sustainable learning ecosystems responsive to contextual needs, transforming organizational culture beyond individual teacher development. These findings contribute to academic supervision literature by providing evidence-based strategies for implementing culturally responsive coaching models in semi-urban educational contexts, addressing the critical gap between policy aspirations and implementation realities in Indonesian education.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on science literacy, learning motivation, and self-efficacy among Indonesian higher education students, addressing a critical gap in educational innovation. Despite growing technological advances, science literacy in Indonesia remains below the OECD average, highlighting an urgent need for transformative learning strategies. Utilizing a Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) approach with Partial Least Squares (PLS-SEM) and bootstrapping (5,000 resamples) on a purposive sample of 180 students from science and technology programs, the research integrates three key constructs—science literacy, motivation, and self-efficacy—to provide a comprehensive analysis of their interrelationships in the context of AI-supported science education. Participants uniformly reported previous engagement with AI-integrated learning environments. Descriptive findings indicate high mean scores, notably a 4.339 average in basic science concept understanding and similarly strong results in self-efficacy and AI implementation. Outer loadings for all constructs exceeded the 0.70 threshold, ensuring robust measurement validity. Path analysis revealed that science literacy powerfully predicts AI implementation (coefficient: 0.853, p < 0.001, 95% CI [0.78, 0.92]) and moderately affects self-efficacy (coefficient: 0.143, p = 0.015, 95% CI [0.03, 0.26]), while AI implementation strongly influences motivation (coefficient: 0.404, p < 0.001, 95% CI [0.29, 0.52]). These results demonstrate the significant and integrated roles of literacy and self-efficacy in fostering student preparedness for AI-driven learning. The study offers valuable insights for enhancing science education and advancing digital competency in developing contexts.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of government budget efficiency measures on the quality of Islamic education in Indonesia. As Islamic education plays a crucial role in the national education system—serving millions of students across Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) and madrasas—budgetary policies are likely to have significant consequences for educational outcomes, teacher welfare, infrastructure, and institutional sustainability. This research employs a qualitative literature review methodology, drawing on secondary sources such as scholarly publications, policy reports, recent academic articles, and digital media content, including YouTube and other social platforms. A descriptive analytical approach is utilized to assess the extent to which budget efficiency policies influence the quality of Islamic educational institutions. The findings indicate that budget reductions adversely affect teacher professional development initiatives, availability of educational facilities, and the overall welfare of teachers. Furthermore, diminished financial support has led to reduced access to essential educational resources for students in madrasas and pesantren. To address these challenges, the study recommends the implementation of alternative strategies, including strengthened governance mechanisms, increased collaboration with the private sector, and more transparent, targeted budget management practices. The study concludes with a call for further empirical research to deepen understanding of the long-term implications of budget efficiency measures on Islamic education in Indonesia.

Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into education continues to expand, yet its effectiveness in improving learning outcomes requires further examination, particularly with regard to the role of self-efficacy in digital learning in Indonesia. This study extends Bandura’s self-efficacy construct by conceptualizing AI as a latent mediating variable functioning as an adaptive educational mechanism through feedback, personalized resources, and dynamic scaffolding. A quantitative approach was employed via an online survey conducted between February and May 2024, yielding 279 valid responses from secondary and higher education students across several Indonesian provinces. Data were analyzed using SEM-PLS with SmartPLS 3.0. The results show that self-efficacy moderately predicts AI adoption (β = 0.373), AI integration strongly predicts learning behavior and performance (β = 0.649), while the direct pathway from self-efficacy is relatively weak (β = 0.144), with the indirect pathway mediated by AI substantially stronger (mediation effect = 0.242). Theoretically, these findings enrich Bandura’s framework of self-efficacy in the context of digital learning by highlighting AI as a central mediating construct, while practically they provide implications for adaptive learning strategies, digital education policy, and technology-driven pedagogical innovation.
