Abstract

This study aims to assess how well the Student Facilitator and Explaining (SFE) learning model, in conjunction with the ular tangga panah media, can enhance the learning outcomes of third-grade students in the Akidah Akhlak course. A quasi-experimental nonequivalent pretest-posttest control group design was employed, involving an experimental group (SFE learning model) and a control group (Numbered Heads Together/NHT), with 52 students participating. Pretests and posttests were used as data collection methods for both groups, and the data were analyzed using an independent sample t-test. The results showed a significant difference in the average posttest scores between the experimental group (M=82.47) and the control group (M=76.36), with a significance value of 0.021, indicating that the SFE learning model was more effective in improving Akidah Akhlak learning outcomes. The novelty of this research lies in implementing an interactive and engaging learning paradigm enhanced with competitive and game-like features. This study presents an alternative learning strategy that improves student learning outcomes in the context of Akidah Akhlak subjects while also fostering interest and collaboration skills.

Abstract

Indonesia is known for its many kinds of differences. Behind the friction that occurs, there are also many exemplary differences because they are able to create tolerance and social harmony of a strong community such as Islam and Hinduism in the Tengger Tribe. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the importance and practice of tolerance and harmonization between Islam and Hinduism that needs to be emulated through religious activities such as Eid al-Fitr and Nyepi Day. This study uses a qualitative type of anthropological approach by collecting the main data sources from interviews with three Islamic religious leaders, five Hindu religious leaders, and seven communities. Secondary data sources from books, and other papers and analyzed using B Miles and Huberman's theory. The results show that 1) the tolerance and harmonization of the Hindu Islamic community in the tengger tribe towards Eid al-Fitr worship is very strong. For example, during fasting, the Hindu people prefer to hide their food, when breaking the fast there are some who distribute free takjil and some participate in selling takjil. Every night of worship with hadrah never disturbed them. During holidays, they tend to help secure the course of worship by becoming a parking attendant and making their yard a parking lot or worship. 2) Likewise, the tolerance and harmonization of the Hindu Islamic community towards the Nyepi holiday worship is also well seen. For example, during the Nyepi celebration, Muslims also participate by limiting all activities including work and going out of the house so that they do not use lights or something shiny like Hindus do during Nyepi. During the food banquet, when Hindus invite, Muslims follow it well. In the analysis of Max Weber's theory of action, the Islamic and Hindu societies do all of this because they have a goal for the future good, which is known as instrumental rational action, and because they follow their parents and ancestors who are known for traditional actions. The next research recommendation is to focus on using quantitative research to determine the influence of worship or religious activities on the tolerance and harmonization of the Tengger ethnic group.

Abstract

This study attempted to investigate further issues dealing with the effect of bilingual education and gender difference on students’ English achievement especially at elementary school students. The data were collected from mid-semester test and final test of a hundred and ten students of six grade at Islamic elementary school of Al Azhar 21 Pontianak. They were divided into two big categories. Half of them belong to bilingual class, while the others were from regular class. In terms of gender, they consisted of forty-nine females and sixty four males. As the purpose of the study was to probe the effect of bilingual education and gender difference on English achievement, the results indicated that both bilingual education and gender difference do not contribute significantly on English achievements. In other words, bilinguals or females do not attain English better than monolinguals or males and vice versa. As such, the  study advocated to avoid the dichotomy of bilingual class and non-bilingual class at school, since they carried more obstacles and challenges in the classroom instruction.

Abstract

This study describes perceptions from pre-service teachers regarding the use of songs in teaching English to young children. The research method comprised qualitative methods. The research subjects consisted of 69 students of early childhood education programs at a private university. The findings explore four primary themes of the students, namely (1) the pedagogical value attributed to songs, (2) the attitudes of students towards the use of songs, (3) the opinions of students concerning the songs utilized, and (4) the perceived effectiveness of songs. The findings indicate a consensus among the respondents on the efficacy of using songs as a tool to introduce English to young children. The investigation into pre-service teachers' perspectives on song-based instruction in teaching English to early childhood learners reveals several key insights. First, pre-service teachers strongly support the inclusion of English songs in the curriculum, recognizing their pedagogical value in enhancing linguistic proficiency and engaging young learners. They agree that songs make learning enjoyable and improve auditory skills, aligning with existing literature on the benefits of song-based education. Second, despite concerns about resource availability and selecting appropriate songs, pre-service teachers believe that songs do not negatively impact learners' concentration or English proficiency assessments. They acknowledge challenges like potential disruptions and time constraints but see overall benefits. Third, teachers view songs as effective tools for vocabulary retention and promoting the automatic use of the target language. While they appreciate the engaging nature of songs, there is some disagreement about their effectiveness in reducing language acquisition anxiety. Fourth, pre-service teachers find English songs accessible and are positive about their use in the classroom, though opinions vary on the frequency of implementation, but most agree on the integration of songs into the curriculum.

Abstract

General education teachers are professionals equipped to teach learners in general education classrooms. However, due to the insufficient number of qualified special education teachers and the rising number of students with disabilities, these teachers are compelled to handle learners with special needs. This study aimed to explore and understand the lived experiences of general education teachers in handling learners with special educational needs. The researcher employed qualitative research, particularly phenomenological design. Seventeen teachers were purposively chosen and interviewed through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, using a validated interview guide.  Thematic analysis was employed to identify patterns of themes in the interview data. The results showed that teachers collectively experienced challenges in instructional skills, negative attitudes toward work, uncooperative parents, behavioral issues, and the responsibilities of teaching learners with special educational needs. An analysis of participants' responses revealed that teachers overcame challenges by self-up-skilling through internet resources, demonstrating adaptability, utilizing support systems, and maintaining strong faith in God. The participants shared insights on the belief that teaching is a noble profession and the need for special education training and seminars for non-special education teachers.
