Abstract

This study proposes a transformative economic innovation education model to strengthen the economic resilience of fishing communities in the Talaud Islands, Indonesia, where livelihoods are highly vulnerable to climate variability and market instability. Given the absence of established diversification initiatives, a participatory multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach was adopted to identify and prioritize feasible product alternatives. The research was conducted in Gemeh District using a mixed-methods design, integrating qualitative insights with quantitative analysis. Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) involving 25 fishermen and five community representatives were conducted to identify eight potential diversification options based on local resource availability and cultural relevance. Subsequently, a decision matrix was constructed using data from 20 active fishermen who evaluated alternatives across seven criteria: initial capital, skill level, weather resilience, income potential, market access, community support, and environmental sustainability. The ANP-EWM-TOPSIS hybrid method was applied to generate a balanced weighting system, combining subjective judgments (via ANP) and objective data variation (via EWM) before the final ranking. Wall décor from marine materials emerged as the top-ranked alternative (CC = 0.817), followed by fermented fish sauce (CC = 0.761), and seaweed farming (CC = 0.739), due to low capital requirements, high weather resilience, and strong community alignment. In contrast, floating net cage aquaculture ranked lowest owing to its high risk and climate vulnerability. These findings demonstrate that land-based, culture-rooted, and waste-utilizing activities offer the most viable pathways for adaptive livelihoods. They concluded that economic resilience can be enhanced through education models that integrate local knowledge, participatory decision-making, and sustainable value addition. This study provides a replicable framework for empowering remote coastal communities in Indonesia and other archipelagic regions.

Abstract

This study explores the revitalization of Wara’ dance in the Talaud Islands Regency through a holistic linguistic approach, aiming to transform it into a dynamic cultural tourism product and a driver of the local creative economy. For over three decades, Wara’ dance has experienced stagnation, perceived as outdated and disconnected from contemporary audiences, leading to declining community participation and diminished economic returns. To address this, the research employs a qualitative method with holistic discourse analysis, integrating linguistic, anthropological, and cultural studies perspectives. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, participatory observation, and analysis of archival and linguistic materials in Arangkaa Village, the historical site of King Larenggam’s resistance. The findings reveal that the dance’s verbal elements are minimal, relying on a few ritual phrases. However, rich cultural meanings are embedded in local language, toponyms like “Arangkaa” (meaning “charcoal”), and customary utterances from rituals such as Manaroho Raho. These elements were systematically analyzed and reinterpreted to innovate choreography, costumes, music, and narrative structure. A new thematic concept, “From Resistance to Revival,” was developed, enhancing the dance’s storytelling capacity and emotional depth. Community participation was central, ensuring cultural authenticity and social acceptance of the changes. The study concludes that a linguistically grounded, participatory approach enables meaningful revitalization, transforming Wara’ dance from a static tradition into a living, relevant art form. Furthermore, the proposed cultural tourism package demonstrates significant potential for generating sustainable income for performers and the local community, positioning the dance as a catalyst for both cultural preservation and economic empowerment in a remote island region.

Abstract

This study explores the role of digital communication strategies in enhancing the brand image of Notary & PPAT Putranto Nur Utomo. In today’s digital era, the credibility of notarial services is not only determined by legal competence but also by how effectively offices manage communication, administration, and client interactions. The research applies a qualitative approach through direct participation, observation, interviews, and document analysis during an internship program. Data were analyzed using Keller’s Customer-Based Brand Equity (CBBE) model and the VRIO framework to evaluate how internal digital systems affect brand perception. The findings reveal that while the office demonstrates strong credibility in legal competence, its digital communication and administrative practices remain suboptimal. Challenges include non-standardized digital archives, inefficient internal communication, and incomplete staff identity formalization. These weaknesses impact professional perception despite positive assessments of legal services. The novelty of this study lies in its emphasis on internal digitalization as the foundation of brand image building, rather than relying solely on external marketing or social media presence. Strengthening standardized digital archives, structured communication systems, and staff professionalism is recommended to create a sustainable competitive advantage. Ultimately, this research contributes to the development of communication strategies for notary offices to achieve a modern, credible, and client-oriented image.

Abstract

This article discusses the controversy and feasibility regarding Soeharto's appointment as Indonesia's National Hero. Although Suharto is known for successfully advancing Indonesia's economy for 32 years, he was also involved in human rights violations, corruption, collusion and nepotism. The aim of writing this article is to examine the theoretical understanding of the issue of Soeharto's appointment as a national hero, the procedure for appointing a hero in Indonesia, as well as the public's views regarding the controversy and suitability of Soeharto to become a National Hero. Using qualitative research methods, this article explores the contributions and controversies surrounding Soeharto as well as the requirements for becoming a national hero. Various views from human rights activists and academics show the importance of moral integrity in honoring national heroes. Even though Suharto had significant contributions, his complex leadership legacy is best recognized as part of history without giving him the title of National Hero.

Abstract

In an increasingly globalized higher education environment, students often face demands to demonstrate competence in English as a form of intellectual capability and professionalism. The use of English among graduate students not only serves as a means of communication, both in everyday life and academically, but also influences the way they form and negotiate cultural identities. Some students feel that the use of English gives them access to global networks and increases social prestige, but on the other hand, they also face a dilemma between maintaining local cultural expressions, so the use of English becomes a symbolic space where students' cultural identities are exchanged, negotiated, and sometimes contested. This study aims to find out how the use of English can shape the cultural identity of postgraduate students in Surabaya. This research is an interpretative qualitative research and was conducted at two universities in Surabaya, namely Airlangga University and Sepuluh November Institute of Technology. Data collection techniques used in this research are participatory observation, document study, and in-depth interviews. The data analysis technique used in this research is an interpretative approach and uses a thematic analysis model. The findings show that graduate students are not passive in accepting foreign cultural influences, but rather actively negotiate and shape their identities through language use.

Abstract

The media employs strategies in news writing to become the primary choice for readers. Ahead of the 2024 Regional Head Elections (Pilkada), media outlets are competing to present news on the subject, including CNNIndonesia.com and Okezone.com. This study aims to understand how political narratives and the roles of parties are constructed by CNNIndonesia.com and Okezone.com in their coverage of the 2024 DKI Jakarta Pilkada. The study adopts a constructivist approach, focusing on how the media constructs the social reality of the 2024 DKI Jakarta Pilkada. The research employs Robert N. Entman's framing analysis, which includes four elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and treatment recommendation. Data collection was carried out through documentation obtained from CNNIndonesia.com and Okezone.com news reports within the period of August 26, 2024. The results reveal that in the define problems stage, CNNIndonesia.com portrays PDIP's decision as a political maneuver based on party loyalty, while Okezone.com focuses on its controversial aspects. In the diagnose causes stage, CNNIndonesia.com highlights internal party factors and ideological interests, whereas Okezone.com emphasizes Megawati's central role in decision-making. The make moral judgment element in both media shows that PDIP prioritizes cadre loyalty over the electability of external figures, albeit from different perspectives. Lastly, in the treatment recommendation stage, CNNIndonesia.com suggests transparency to reduce negative perceptions, while Okezone.com stresses the importance of further explanation from PDIP to maintain public support. These findings indicate that media framing not only shapes public opinion but can also influence local political dynamics by crafting specific narratives tailored to each media outlet's focus. This study underscores the critical role of media in shaping public perceptions and opinions about candidates and party decisions, potentially impacting the outcome of the 2024 DKI Jakarta Pilkada.

Abstract

This study explores the use of the Raja Pauh Ranap Mosque cultural heritage site as an educational medium to foster historical awareness among students at Madrasah Aliyah (MA) Hismar in Indragiri Hulu Regency, Indonesia. The background of the research stems from the limited integration of local historical resources into the history curriculum, which often relies heavily on textbook-based and lecture-centered approaches. The aim of this research is to describe the implementation of site-based learning using the mosque, analyze students’ historical awareness, and identify the challenges faced by teachers in this process. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving teachers, students, school administrators, and community figures. The findings indicate that utilizing the heritage site as a learning medium significantly increased students’ motivation and engagement in history learning. Students demonstrated stronger historical consciousness, not only in understanding local history but also in developing appreciation and responsibility for cultural preservation. Moreover, the study found that the spiritual atmosphere of the mosque, combined with experiential learning activities, enriched the affective and reflective dimensions of historical learning. This research contributes a practical model of heritage-based learning that can be replicated in other educational settings, especially in regions with valuable cultural assets.
