Abstract

Abstract. Oral health issues in children are a significant global public health concern. Factors such as dietary habits, socioeconomic status, and level of knowledge affect the prevalence of dental caries, periodontal diseases, and other oral health conditions. In Indonesia, especially in urban areas like Surabaya, growing attention is paid to children's oral health. This study aimed to assess children's dental and oral health status in Kelurahan Simokerto, Surabaya, and identify associated risk factors. The sample is 38 children aged 3-11 years in Kelurahan Simokerto. Data were gathered through clinical exams. Results showed a high prevalence of dental caries and poor oral hygiene practices, such as infrequent brushing and limited flossing. Socioeconomic factors, including parental education and household income, were linked to the children's oral health status. These findings highlight the need for targeted oral health promotion programs in Kelurahan Simokerto, focusing on improving oral hygiene practices, encouraging regular dental check-ups, and addressing socioeconomic determinants of oral health. The study highlights the need for long-term, community-driven interventions to address dental caries and improve oral health outcomes, as short-term efforts showed no significant changes in DEFT and OHIS frequencies in Kelurahan Simokerto.

Abstract

Access to clean water is a fundamental necessity that underpins effective public health services and the operational efficiency of health facilities, including the Bonggo Health Center in Sarmi Regency. Recognizing the importance of reliable clean water access, a community assistance initiative was launched to establish a sustainable water installation system at the Bonggo Health Center. This initiative is crucial to enhancing the health center’s ability to deliver quality healthcare services, as safe, clean water is essential for various healthcare functions, from sanitation to patient care. The primary aim of the assistance program is to equip the Bonggo Health Center with a dependable source of clean water, ensuring it meets health and safety standards for use in medical services. To achieve this goal, the implementation method was carefully structured, involving several sequential steps. First, the service team conducted a comprehensive location survey to assess the water requirements and potential challenges. Following this, the team engaged in in-depth problem discussions, planning sessions, and preparatory work to lay the groundwork for the installation. The actual construction of the water installation was then carried out, followed by rigorous testing and evaluation to ensure functionality and quality. Through close collaboration with the Armopa Village community, the service team successfully completed a fully operational clean water installation. This unit now provides a reliable supply of high-quality water for the Bonggo Health Center, significantly improving the center’s capacity to serve the healthcare needs of the surrounding community. This installation not only meets immediate needs but also sets a foundation for sustained health service enhancements and community well-being in the region.

Abstract

The ‘Minutes of English Songs’ program aimed at helping teachers in maximizing students' vocabulary acquisition in primary schools. Through a music-based learning method, it was designed using English children's songs with simple lyrics to introduce new vocabulary in a contextual and fun way. This activity involved students of SDN 1 Talang Kelapa as participants of the Community Service activity in understanding, remembering, and applying vocabulary through structured activities, including singing, translating lyrics, moving limbs, repeating lyrics, and multiple-choice question exercises. A quasi-experimental method was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the program, with a pre-test and post-test to measure the improvement in students' vocabulary acquisition. The results of the program showed that there was a significant improvement in students' vocabulary skills after attending the program, with an average pre-test score of 55%, which increased to 85% in the post-test. In addition to vocabulary improvement, students also showed increased confidence in speaking English and had positive perceptions of the program. The findings suggested that a music-based approach can be an effective alternative in teaching English vocabulary at the primary school level. The program is expected to be applied more widely as an innovative effort to improve students' vocabulary acquisition in a fun way.

Abstract

Pattappa Village is a village that has the potential for minerals. However, in developing its potential, residents tend to ignore it because they do not know how to manage it. Residents only know that to manage it, they must attract investors. The uniqueness of the mineral excavation potential can be encouraged from a tourism perspective. This can ensure sustainability compared to mining, which has a management life. Community empowerment activities aim to provide an understanding of the potential of mineral excavation-based tourism owned by the village. The implementation is by conducting socialization, filling out questionnaires, and discussing the evaluation of questionnaire results. The activity results showed a paradigm shift in villagers’ development of tourism potential. Residents have the awareness to manage the potential of minerals in geotourism.
