Abstract

In the early 20th century, the idea of modernity emerged and continued to evolve in the press, including Islamic press. Interestingly, as part of the expression of the Muslim movement, the concept of modernity was represented distinctively. This research aims to investigate the linguistic expression in the Islamic press and link it to the concept of modernity that emerged in the early 20th century. The approach employed in this research is qualitative, with a corpus linguistic method used to collect and interpret data. The data consists of eight newspapers published between 1915 and 1934: Oetoesan Islam, Sinar Islam, Insjaf, Sawoenggaling, Al Qisthaus, Mata-Hari, Lembaga Baroe, and Pewarta Arab. Findings from this research include, firstly, 25 words expressing modernity, such as: orang, bangsa, kaoem, golongan, pergerakan, kemadjoean, perhimpoenan, kemerdikaän, studieclub, merdeka, kemerdekaan, peladjaran, pengadjaran, sekolah, sekolahan, mempeladjari, kepandaian, beladjar, soerat, kabar, toelisan, hoeroef, membatja, menoelis dan penoelis which have a significant frequency. Secondly, based on the exploration of these words, four concepts of modernity are reflected in the early 20th-century Islamic press: (1) the idea of modern education as a path to progress; (2) the concept of nationalism and awareness in organising for independence; (3) the idea of economic welfare; and (4) the importance of literacy, newspapers, and criticism of Latinization.

Abstract

The representation of syllables, which are realized through akshara, often gives rise to ambiguity in their phonological mapping, consequently impacting reading and writing performance. The objective of this study is to describe how syllables are represented by Balinese script graphemes within Balinese-Indonesian dictionaries with Latin and Balinese scripts in 2016. The list of Balinese script entries that make up the Balinese – Indonesian Latin and Balinese Dictionary totals 16,162. The graphemic analysis of each basic shape of the Balinese script (specifically the Wreastra type) employed in the entries is conducted based on linguistic value criteria from Meletis (2019). The validated Balinese script represents language units at the hidden syllable level, allowing for the analysis of phonological syllable structure information based on the Balinese syllable pattern. The research findings indicate that the Balinese script graphemes represent syllables using CV and V patterns. The Balinese script grapheme that represents CV (/Ca/ and /Cә/) is realized by the main consonant grapheme group and its paired variant. Syllables with a V pattern, on the other hand, are formed through a combination of free graphemes representing glottal stop consonants (/ha/) and bound graphemes in the form of diacritics used for vowel markers other than attached vowels, that is ulu /i/, pepet /ǝ/, taleng /e/, taleng tedong /o/, and suku /u/.

Abstract

“Kerajaan Burung” is a drama script about children written by Saini KM which won a children drama script writing contest in 1980. This drama script was popular to be performed by many children theatre community since it was published firstly due to ecology pedagogical values. Besides its values, the drama script has hidden ecofeminism discourses. This research aimed to investigate those discourses. This research was descriptive qualitative research which applies reading, noting, and data card techniques in collecting the data. The theory of ecofeminism has been applied in analyzing the patriarchal perspective of anthropocentrism toward nature and women. The data of the research were words, sentences, dialogues, performance explanations (didaskali), and discourses related to ecofeminism. The source of the research data was the drama script “Kerajaan Burung” written by Saini KM. The analysis results showed that literary work written by male writers which talk about nature conservation cannot be freed by gender bias about ecology. The naming of the main character, Kiku, which is not followed by detailed characterization causes selection of the actress in theatre performances. This finding affirmed the idea that responsibility toward environmental damage and nature conservation is women's duty. Women are people who are often mocked by the patriarchal system applied in society.
