Abstract

The traditional rice barn of the Toraja community, known as Alang, serves not only as a storage facility for harvested rice but also embodies deeply rooted socio-cultural values that have been transmitted across generations. These social values hold significant potential for strengthening students’ character education. This study aims to uncover the social meanings embedded in Alang and to examine their implications for the development of character education at the elementary school level. The research employed a qualitative approach using an ethnographic study method. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings indicate that the socio-economic development of Torajan society has led to a transformation in the function of Alang, from a traditional rice storage structure into a symbol of cultural identity and social status. The number of Alang, the motifs of their carvings, and their structural quality signify levels of prosperity and social prestige (customary status). Although some community members no longer store rice in a traditional manner, social values such as siangkaran (mutual cooperation), katuoan (family loyalty), and respect for ancestors continue to thrive within Torajan cultural narratives and have strong implications for character education.

Abstract

This qualitative study investigates the role of metacognitive instruction in developing self-regulated English as a Foreign Language (EFL) speaking skills among undergraduate students. Speaking is often perceived as one of the most challenging language skills due to its cognitive complexity and affective demands. Drawing on theories of metacognition and self-regulated learning, this study explores how metacognitive instruction is implemented in EFL speaking classrooms, how it fosters students’ self-awareness, and how it contributes to the development of self-regulation in speaking. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of instructional materials at State University of Makassar. The data were analyzed thematically using systematic coding and categorization procedures. The findings reveal that metacognitive instruction was implemented through structured pre-speaking, while-speaking, and post-speaking stages that explicitly emphasized planning, monitoring, and evaluation. The instruction enhanced students’ linguistic and affective self-awareness and supported the gradual development of self-regulated speaking behaviors, including independent monitoring, self-correction, and motivational regulation. The study highlights the pedagogical value of integrating metacognitive instruction into EFL speaking classrooms to promote learner autonomy, confidence, and sustainable speaking development

Abstract

This research explores the role of metalinguistic awareness in English as a foreign language learning through a psycholinguistics perspective and analyzes its implications for curriculum design. Employing a qualitative approach with library research methods, this study synthesizes academic literature to understand dimensions of metalinguistic awareness including phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, and orthographic awareness and their roles in cognitive processes of language learning. Findings indicate that metalinguistic awareness significantly correlates with language skills, particularly reading comprehension, and functions as a strong mediator in achieving linguistic competence. Learners with multilingual backgrounds demonstrate higher performance in metalinguistic awareness compared to monolingual learners. Practical implications suggest the necessity of systematic integration of metalinguistic awareness development activities in curriculum through active learning approaches, utilization of learning technologies, and consideration of multilingual contexts. This research contributes theoretically to enriching applied psycholinguistics literature and offers practical guidance for curriculum developers to design learning programs responsive to learners' cognitive needs by positioning metalinguistic awareness as a core component of English language competence development.

Abstract

The shift toward the Merdeka Curriculum in Indonesia emphasizes communicative competence in English language learning, making the effective implementation of Communicative Language Teaching Strategies (CLTLS) increasingly urgent, especially in vocational high schools where practical language skills are essential. This study investigates the challenges faced by English teachers in implementing CLTLS within this context. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with English teachers, and analysis of relevant teaching documents. The findings reveal five major challenges: (1) difficulty in adapting communicative strategies to diverse student characteristics and vocational needs; (2) low student motivation and confidence in using English communicatively; (3) limited availability of teaching materials that support communicative practices; (4) assessment systems that remain focused on grammar rather than communicative competence; and (5) lack of institutional support coupled with administrative burdens that restrict teachers’ ability to innovate. These challenges indicate that successful implementation of CLTLS in vocational schools requires systemic improvements, including curriculum adjustments, development of context-relevant materials, enhancement of student engagement strategies, and stronger institutional backing.

Abstract

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are a crucial pillar of the Indonesian economy, yet they often face fundamental obstacles in financial management, particularly in systematic financial recording. This study aims to develop a Simple Visual Accounting Education Module to increase financial recording awareness among SMEs in the God Bless Park and Moraya Fort historical tourism area in Tondano . This research employs the Research and Development (R&D) method with the 4-D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate), limited to the development stage. The module was designed based on User-Centered Design principles and the Dual Coding Theory, integrating visual elements such as illustrations, icons, and infographics to simplify abstract accounting concepts. Development involved 20 SME actors, from initial needs identification to final product testing. The results showed that the module was highly feasible and effective, with 71.4% of users rating it "Very Good" and 28.6% "Good" in the final trial. The visual approach significantly enhanced understanding, motivation, and confidence among SME actors in managing their business finances. Post-intervention, there was a notable behavioral shift from informal recording practices to systematic daily cash flow recording and simple profit-loss reporting. This study concludes that the visual accounting module is a practical, effective, and well-accepted educational medium. It serves not only as a learning tool but also as an instrument of local economic empowerment, bridging the financial literacy gap for SMEs with limited educational backgrounds. Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the humanistic science learning approach on the scientific literacy skills of eighth-grade students at SMP IT Yaa Bunayya Makassar. The humanistic science approach is a learning strategy that emphasizes a balance between mastery of scientific concepts and the development of human, moral, and social values. This study employs a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design in the form of a pretest-posttest control group design. The research subjects consisted of two classes, namely the experimental class taught using a humanistic science approach and the control class which received conventional learning, each totaling 28 students. Data were collected through scientific literacy tests, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using an independent t-test and the N-Gain Score. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the posttest scores of the experimental and control groups with a calculated t-value = 4.82 > t-table = 2.004 (p = 0.000 < 0.05). The average N- Gain value of the experimental group was 0.60 (medium-high category), while the control group was 0.30 (medium-low category). The highest increase was in the socio-scientific context dimension with an N-Gain of 0.62, indicating that students were better able to relate scientific concepts to social reality. Thus, the humanistic science learning approach has a significant effect on improving students' scientific literacy skills, especially in developing conceptual understanding, scientific thinking skills, and social awareness. This approach has also been shown to foster scientific attitudes such as responsibility, empathy, and curiosity. The results of this study confirm that science learning that integrates human values can be an effective strategy in realizing meaningful and character-based science education.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen-AI) as a scaffolding tool for mastering English for Specific Purposes (ESP) within the field of Civic Education. By adopting a cross-regional perspective, the research examines how AI facilitates technical vocabulary acquisition and grammatical competence—specifically regarding Modal Verbs—among pre-service teachers in Indonesia and Uzbekistan, two nations currently undergoing significant digital transformations in their educational sectors. The research utilizes a descriptive-evaluative approach, integrating a pedagogical needs analysis from an Indonesian cohort with a comparative policy review of Uzbekistan’s recent foreign language reforms. Data were gathered through structured surveys focusing on linguistic barriers in "Civic English," AI interaction patterns, and student preferences for interactive, AI-driven learning modules. The results reveal a shared "linguistic gap" in both contexts, where traditional static materials (PDFs) fail to address the nuances of legal English. 61.5% of students exhibited difficulty in distinguishing Modal Verbs (Must, Should, Can) in constitutional contexts. However, the study identifies that Gen-AI acts as a "Linguistic Equalizer," with over 80% of respondents demanding AI-integrated modules that offer real-time feedback and debate simulations. The findings suggest that AI effectively lowers the "Affective Filter" for students in both Southeast and Central Asia, providing a standardized digital scaffolding that transcends geographical boundaries. The study argues for a shift toward "AI-Mediated Scaffolding" in ESP curricula. It highlights that educational policies in both Indonesia (Merdeka Belajar) and Uzbekistan (New Uzbekistan Strategy) provide a fertile ground for AI integration. The research recommends a collaborative framework for developing interactive, cross-cultural ESP modules that prepare future civic educators for global professional engagement
