Abstract

This study examines the life and humanitarian legacy of Johannes van der Steur, widely known as the “Father of Humanity” in Magelang, and analyzes his work through Abraham Maslow’s humanistic theory. Using Kuntowijoyo’s historical method, the research follows five stages: topic selection, heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. Data were collected from personal diaries, biographies, KITLV archives, and historical artifacts. The findings show that Van der Steur’s humanitarian mission was driven by deep concern for abandoned and vulnerable children during the Dutch colonial period. Through the establishment of the Oranje Nassau Orphanage, he developed a systematic approach that addressed children’s physiological, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization needs. Analysis based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs reveals that Van der Steur’s practices embodied key humanistic principles decades before the publication of A Theory of Human Motivation in 1943. His efforts extended beyond charity by creating a supportive environment that promoted dignity, personal growth, and social integration. This study concludes that Van der Steur’s legacy reflects the humanistic belief in the inherent potential of every individual and demonstrates the transformative role of education and care in fostering self-actualization.

Abstract

This study responds to the increasing incidence of school violence by examining the role of anti-violence values in fostering students’ prosocial behavior through Social Studies learning. An exploratory sequential mixed-methods design was employed. The qualitative phase involved interviews, observations, and document analysis with eighth-grade students at Al-Hikmah IIBS Batu Junior High School. The quantitative phase involved 38 students selected through total sampling and analyzed using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS. The findings revealed that students perceived the internalization of anti-violence values positively, as reflected in prosocial behaviors such as sharing, cooperation, helping, and donating during learning activities. The measurement model demonstrated satisfactory validity and reliability, while the structural model indicated that the internalization of anti-violence values had a positive and significant effect on students’ prosocial behavior. These results suggest that integrating anti-violence values into Social Studies learning contributes to the development of prosocial behavior and supports violence prevention efforts in schools. The study highlights the importance of value-based learning in creating a safe and supportive educational environment.

Abstract

This study examines the history of Klampok Sugar Factory in Banjarnegara Regency, Central Java. Although the factory has long ceased operations, its historical legacy remains visible in the Purwareja Klampok area. This research aims to investigate the establishment of the Klampok Sugar Factory, analyze its roles and impacts on the local community, and identify the factors that led to its closure. The study employs the historical research method, including topic selection, heuristics, source verification, interpretation, and historiography. Data were collected from colonial archives, historical documents, and relevant scholarly literature. The findings reveal that the Klampok Sugar Factory was established in 1889 as part of the expansion of the colonial sugar industry. The factory played a significant role in local development by creating employment opportunities, supporting the growth of railway transportation for sugar distribution, and contributing to educational development through institutions such as the Europeesche Lagere School (ELS). However, the factory ceased operations in 1933 due to the global economic crisis (the Malaise), which severely affected the sugar industry. This study highlights the factory’s substantial contribution to the social, economic, and infrastructural development of Banjarnegara during the colonial period.

Abstract

Integrating the concept of social capital is ideal for developing social studies materials. This article aims to explore the synergy between the concept of social capital in practice and an ethnopedagogical approach that prioritizes local wisdom in social studies education in Indonesia. The method used in compiling this article is a literature review with the application of a SWOT analysis. The SWOT analysis yields strategic insights for the development of both approaches. The findings indicate that integrating ethnopedagogy into social studies can strengthen interpersonal relationships, increase community awareness, and revitalize cultural identity amidst globalization. Developing social capital through collaborative learning has been shown to foster critical thinking, empathy, and active participation in citizenship. This study proposes a conceptual model that aligns the dimensions of social capital; bonds, connections, and relationships—with ethnopedagogical strategies to achieve culturally responsive social studies learning. However, challenges such as cultural homogenization, limited teacher capacity, and symbolic cultural representations need to be addressed through policy support, professional development, and curriculum reform that respects indigenous epistemologies. Integrating these two approaches offers a transformative pathway to developing culturally grounded, socially connected, and democratically minded learners.

Abstract

This study examines the Bueng Selimpat tradition practiced by the Kutai ethnic group in Benua Baru Village as a worldview that links three key elements: humanity, nature, and ancestral heritage. For the Kutai community, rivers serve not only as a resource but are also regarded as the abode of sacred forces believed to be their ancestors. The main objective is to analyze the existence and sustainability of this tradition amid changing times. Using a Husserlian phenomenological approach, data were collected from ten informants: five Kutai residents who still practice, understand, and preserve the tradition, and five university students who offered perspectives on its relevance today. The findings show that Bueng Selimpat has remained preserved and practiced despite cultural acculturation; the community maintains the tradition as ancestral heritage while integrating local cultural values with formal religious teachings. This research enriches studies in the social sciences, provides educational material to instill noble values, fosters harmonious living, and strengthens national unity based on local wisdom that aligns with the values of Pancasila.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the #BoikotTrans7 content on social media, especially on the TikTok platform, as well as media framing in the news on the Xpose Uncensored program on Trans7, which features footage of activities at Islamic boarding schools. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative with content analysis methods and uses the framing theory model of Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki, which includes syntactic, script, thematic, and rhetorical structures. The research data was obtained from the Xpose Uncensored program broadcast and the content and public comments on the TikTok platform. The results show that first, the #BoikotTrans7 content on TikTok contains various posts that re-display clips of the broadcast and provide clarification on parts of the broadcast that are considered to not fully present the cultural context of Islamic boarding schools. Second, the framing analysis shows that the news in the broadcast tends to emphasize visual aspects rather than contextual explanations of the values of Islamic boarding school customs and traditions, thus giving rise to various interpretations among the public. This study demonstrates the importance of presenting balanced and contextual information in news related to religious institutions.

Abstract

This research was conducted based on various problems still found in Social Studies (IPS) learning, such as the use of less varied teaching methods, minimal innovation in the learning process, and limited access to technology for students in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). This study aims to analyze the use of Instagram as an innovation in Social Studies learning through content presented by Medan Amruallah. The study used a qualitative approach with a case study method on Instagram posts supported by a literature review. Data were obtained through observations of content characteristics, user interactions, and the educational content contained in the posts. The results show that Medan Amruallah's content has the potential to be an effective learning medium in supporting the delivery of Social Studies material, particularly regarding history, culture, and various social phenomena. The visual, informative, and interactive characteristics of the content are able to attract attention and increase student participation in the learning process. In addition, the use of easy-to-understand language and the connection of the material to social reality also help students understand Social Studies concepts more deeply. Therefore, Instagram can be an alternative, innovative learning medium to support more engaging Social Studies learning and in line with developments in the digital era.

Abstract

The transmission of war memories is indispensable for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16): Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. However, in oral history education, the experiential and sociocultural boundary between aging war survivors and contemporary students poses a significant challenge, leading to psychological burden and loss of opportunity for critical analysis. This study aims to clarify the learning mechanisms through which students and testifiers overcome this boundary to co-construct a new historical narrative of peace and form a sustainable community of peace practice. A secondary analysis was conducted on two cases from the Paintings of the Atomic Bomb (PAB) project in Hiroshima, employing the four learning mechanisms of boundary crossing (i.e., identification, coordination, reflection, and transformation) proposed by Akkerman and Bakker (2011). The results demonstrated that simply listening to testimonies leads to the reinforcement of the boundary; therefore, crossing it necessitates the coproduction of the PAB as a boundary object, together with a clear concrete operational goal. Through this triadic relationship mediated by the boundary object, participants coordinate communication, proactively reflect on their respective roles, ultimately transform perspectives, and co-construct a new historical narrative of peace.

Abstract

Puri is the residence of the Kshatriya dynasty, while Griya is the residence of the Brahmin dynasty. Puri and Griya represent habitus and capital that can serve as arenas for preserving Balinese culture. The purpose of this study is to analyze habitus and capital in Puri and Griya based on Bourdieu's theory of social practice, as well as to analyze cultural inheritance through informal education in Puri and Griya. The research paradigm is qualitative ethnography. The research subjects are one extended Puri and Griya family selected using purposive sampling techniques. The research objects are social practices learned informally. Data collection techniques use participatory observation, in-depth naturalistic interviews, documentation, and FGDs, with semi-structured instruments. Data analysis uses ethnographic techniques, namely triangulation, which includes description, analysis, and interpretation. The essence of the ethnography obtained is that Puri and Griya are a habitus with the power of economic, social, cultural, and symbolic capital. The power of these diverse forms of capital shapes social practices in the form of informal education that both teach and preserve elements of Balinese culture, such as refined Balinese, Old Javanese, Sanskrit, knowledge systems, social organization, religious systems, and the arts.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the innovation of Go-Pest technology as an eco-friendly solution to improve economic efficiency in the agricultural sector and to support Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The main problem addressed is the high dependence of farmers on chemical pesticides, which contribute to environmental degradation, increased production costs, and potential health risks. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach through literature review and conceptual analysis to explore the relationship between technological innovation, economic efficiency, and sustainability. The findings indicate that Go-Pest technology, which utilizes infrasonic waves combined with a digital monitoring system, is effective in reducing pest disturbances without causing environmental harm. Furthermore, the implementation of this technology contributes to economic efficiency by reducing pesticide costs, minimizing labor requirements, and increasing agricultural productivity. From an ESD perspective, this innovation integrates environmental, economic, and technological aspects to support sustainable agricultural practices. Therefore, Go-Pest technology has significant potential as an innovative solution to promote sustainable agriculture while improving farmers’ welfare.
