Abstract

Background: Stunting remains a persistent public health concern in Indonesia, and adolescence represents a strategic period to prevent its long-term consequences. Understanding sanitation and nutritional behaviors among adolescents is essential because these behaviors contribute to stunting prevention efforts. The purpose of this study is to analyze the distribution and determinants of stunting prevention behavior in adolescents in Sukoharjo district. Methods: This research employed a cross-sectional design to assess the relationship between individual characteristics and stunting prevention behaviors among high school students in Sukoharjo District. Data on knowledge, sanitation behavior, and balanced nutrition behavior were obtained using a validated questionnaire. Because the data were not normally distributed, bivariate analysis using Spearman’s correlation test was performed to examine associations between age, pocket money, BMI, knowledge, and stunting prevention behaviors. Result: Most adolescents demonstrated good sanitation behavior but only moderate nutritional behavior. Although knowledge levels were generally high, knowledge did not translate into improved sanitation or nutrition practices. All correlations between age, pocket money, BMI, or knowledge and sanitation or nutritional behavior were categorized as very weak, with p-values >0.05. Additionally, sanitation behavior did not correlate with nutritional behavior, indicating that these behaviors are shaped by different influencing factors. Conclusions: Individual characteristics and knowledge were not significant predictors of adolescents’ sanitation or nutritional behavior. The absence of meaningful associations suggests that broader social, environmental, and familial influences may play a more dominant role in shaping stunting prevention behaviors. Therefore, interventions should emphasize supportive environments, family engagement, and behavior-oriented strategies rather than relying solely on knowledge-based approaches

Abstract

Background: The transition to motherhood, particularly for first-time mothers in rural communities, presents profound challenges due to limited access to healthcare and education. This study investigates newborn care practices among first-time mothers in Zamboanga Sibugay, Philippines, focusing on the relationship between sociodemographic factors and adherence to recommended care practices. Methods: The study employed a descriptive quantitative design, surveying 120 first-time mothers using a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed to capture socio-demographic data and evaluate newborn care practices using a Likert scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Spearman’s Rho, and Chi-Square correlation to identify significant relationships between variables. Results: Findings reveal high adherence to newborn care practices, notably in infant feeding, sleep routines, and post-natal health monitoring. However, civil status significantly influences newborn caregiving approaches (χ² = 7.44, p = 0.024), implying that marital status might affect the level of support or resources available to the caregiver, which in turn could impact their caregiving practices. Conclusion: The study concludes that while newborn care practices among first-time mothers are generally adequate, targeted educational interventions could further improve these practices, especially in areas like cord care. These findings underscore the need for enhanced support and education for first-time mothers to promote optimal newborn care and health outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Smoking behavior is a habit that is still commonly found among adolescents, including students at SMPN 22 Malang City. Adolescents are in a phase of psychosocial development that is highly susceptible to environmental influences, such as peers, family, and social communities. Objectives: This study aims to investigate students' smoking behavior and the factors contributing to it, including perceptions, motivations, and school policies in addressing it.Methods: The study employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, involving 30 informants comprising students, homeroom teachers, guidance counselors, student affairs teachers, and the school principal. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations. Results: The results of the study indicate that smoking behavior among students is influenced by three main factors: predisposing factors (students' good knowledge is not aligned with their attitudes toward smoking), enabling factors (easy access to cigarettes, lack of supervision, and limited health information about smoking), and reinforcing factors (social support from peers, smoking family members, and teenage lifestyle). Additionally, students' motivation to smoke is related to curiosity, emotional release, stress, and identity formation. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study indicates that smoking behavior is the result of a complex interaction between individual and social environmental factors. Therefore, a collaborative approach between schools, parents, and external agencies is needed through more stringent and targeted policies and education to reduce smoking rates among adolescents in schools.

Abstract

Background: Labor pain is a major concern for women, especially during the first stage, which is often intense and long. It is caused by both physical and emotional factors, like anxiety and fear. Proper pain management can improve the birth experience. A birthing ball is a non-drug method that helps reduce pain, support cervical dilation, and widen the pelvis, making labor shorter and aiding vaginal delivery. It also helps women feel more in control during labor. This study aims to examine the effect of using a birthing ball on pain intensity during the active phase of the first stage of labor.Method: This study is quantitative research using a quasi-experimental approach with a one-group pre-test-post-test design. The sample consisted of 30 respondents selected through purposive sampling, using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) observation sheet. Data analysis was conducted using the paired t-test.Results: The study found that the average pain intensity during the active phase of the first stage of labor before using the birthing ball was 7.29 (severe pain), and after using the birthing ball, it was 6.06 (moderate pain). The paired t-test showed that there is a significant effect of using a birthing ball on labor pain intensity during the active phase of the first stage of labor with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.005).Conclusion: There is an effect of using birthing ball on labor pain intensity in active phase of the first stage of labor. Therefore, we need to encourage collaboration between midwives and doctors in the use of birthing balls to ensure a holistic and comprehensive approach to labor pain management.

Abstract

Background: Breast and cervical cancer are the leading causes of cancer and cancer deaths among women in India. Though effective modalities for prevention of these are available by screening, the utilisation of these services is dismal in India. The study aims to determine the knowledge, awareness, attitude and utilization of cervical and breast cancer screening among nurses working in a tertiary care institute. Methods: Cross-sectional survey conducted among 266 nurses working at Government Medical College Kozhikode, a 1500 bedded hospital. Nurses working at our institute were provided with a pre-designed questionnaire designed to test their knowledge, awareness and attitude about utilization of screening facilities available in institution. Results: Approximately 77% who participated were aware about cervical cancer screening and 92% about breast cancer screening. Although 71% of them have advised Pap smear to general population, only 27% of them have undergone it themselves. 78% of them knew about screening of breast cancer but only 56% do regular breast self-examination. Only one had undergone a Mammogram. Conclusions: Knowledge about screening tests for breast and cervical cancer were appreciable in nursing staffs but utilization of screening programmes for themselves were very less. Non-utilization of screening modalities in spite of availability at a low cost highlights the importance of identifying less realized barriers such as emotional, cognitive and cultural ones. Attitude about screening has to be addressed in awareness programmes that reinforce the benefits of screening.
