Abstract

All educational institutions during COVID-19 pandemic move to online learning to prevent the spread of this virus. All students and lecturers of the institutions have no other option. They must use some of online platforms to continue the learning process. The aim of this research was to know the students’ perspective of online learning on speaking class during COVID-19 pandemic. This research was categorized as mixed method research. There were 20 items of the questioner that have been distributed. The result showed that 14 items disagree and 6 items agree.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out the effect of direct-focused and direct-unfocused written corrective feedback in improving freshmen essay writing the use of preposition, article and past tense are investigated in students revision text and new pieces of essay writing. The study uses an experimental method and true-experimental design. Data collected from 60 students for 3 month. Data are analyzed by two-way ANOVAs using SPSS 21. The study found the significant effect of Direct-Focused CF. Likewise, using Direct-Unfocused CF has positive effect. Both groups outperform in revision and new pieces of writing than group without corrective feedback. In addition, there is positive interaction effect among the use of such corrective feedback and exposure. For that reason, it seems that is evidence underpinning the importance of such feedbacks and exposure in increasing students’ writing accuracy at using any grammatical items. Further study needs to be held in order to reveal the relationship or effect of students’ motivation, perception and engagement and typology of feedback in improving students writing performance.

Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out whether or not Student Team Work Learning Strategy (STWL) has positive effect on students’ reading comprehension. The research was pre experimental with one pre-test post-test design. The sample of the study was second grade students of MA Nurul Muhsini Jomang Batu Jai Lombok Tengah which consisted of one class 30 students. The instrument used was reading test inthe form of multile chose test and objective test which were consited of 25 items. The score was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential analysis. Descriptive analysis was used to describe mean, mode, median, and standard deviation of group, and inferential analysis was used to describe the value of t-test for comparison between t-table. It was showed that the value of t-test = 5.411 was higher than the value of t-table = 1.692. Alternatively, using Student Team Work Learning Strategy has positive effect on students’ reading comprehension at second grade students of MA Nurul Muhsini Jomang Batu Jai Lombok Tengah.

Abstract

Convensional Learning Model, such as lecturing method which makes teacher as the learning center without notice to the activeness and participation of students in the classroom still becomes teachers’ favourite style in teaching reading comprehension. Consequently, the learning process tends to be monotonous. This factor can answer the reason why the students’ achievement in reading skill at SMA 2 Ternate is not optimal. Then, this is suspected to be a factor in the occurrence of these problems. Therefore, the researcher applied TBLT (Task Based Language Teaching) and combine it with authentic material in reading comprehension. This research is a quasi-experimental research with the nonequivalent pretest-posttest group design. The total population of this study were students of XI SMA Negeri 2 Ternate, who were class XI students of SMA Negeri 2 Kota Ternate. One of the XI classes was used as the experimental class and another one became the control class, then it analyzed by using SPSS 20.0. The selection of the class was based on the observation to see the similarity of students' abilities in these classes. The result showed that the TBLT method combined with the authentic material in the Reading Comprehension could increase: (1) the learning motivation of XI SMA 2 Ternate students; (2) increasing the student learning outcomes. It can be seen from the results of the Paired Sample t-test table that the significance = 0.000 is less than the significant level (α) = 0.05, then H0 is rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that there has been an increasing of learning outcomes in the experimental class from pre-test to post-test. Based on the result, the TBLT method can be recommended as a method used to increase English learning motivation.

Abstract

This research used qualitative research method. The theory used is Brown & Levinson (1987) about 15 positive politeness strategies. The aim of this study was to find the positive politeness strategies in Virgin-Meet the Author. Virgin is a Youtube channel. This channel contains videos that can inspire others through the good videos that are in it. One of the inspirational episodes is the Meet the Author episode where the author can tell the audience the contents of the book she/he has made so that audience can understand the contents of the book. In collecting data, this study used observational method and non-participatory techniques. Pragmatic identity method used in this research to analyze the data. The result that the researcher found were strategy of using in group identity markers, avoiding disagreement, giving and asking for reasons, includes both speaker and hearer in activity and exaggerating strategy in Virgin-Meet the Author.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe the reasons of using Indonesian language as medium of instruction at non-English department students. This research is conducted at non English department of Mandalika University of Education and there were two English general lecturers and 14 students taken as samples. Type of research used in this research was descriptive quantitative research by survey model. Data were taken from the result of questionnaires answered by both lecturers and students then analyzed by using frequency and percentage. Based on the research findings it can be concluded that there were ten reasons of using Indonesian as medium of instruction for non-English department students. Those ten reasons covered three functions that for teaching language skills, teaching the component of language skills and class management. The three functions gave positive effect in teaching and learning English at non-English department. For teaching language skills aimed to develop students’ understanding in reading comprehension, to discuss among students is easier, and to make English easy to learn. The using of Indonesian in component of language skills aimed to explain difficult words in reading text in students’ native language, to explain grammar, to explain error made by the students. The reasons of using Indonesian in classroom management can be seen before and after teaching and learning process such as to explain new English teaching material, to develop learning atmosphere more comfortable, to ensure understanding of previous teaching material and giving instruction for assignment or test.

Abstract

Student motivation comes out as a pivotal element in learning English. The presence of an interesting and joyful class environment is indispensably necessary to keep the student motivation up in following the whole learning activities. One out of the ways to increase student motivation in learning English is by employing supportive instructional media. Here, the researchers applied Technopoly Etics, an accustomed board combined from monopoly and technology (QR code). The data were gathered through observation (teaching activities) and interview. The findings show that student motivation and participation in following the class gradually rose once being taught with the aforementioned media.

Abstract

The film Joy is a motivational movie that inspires viewers to work hard and achieve their dreams. This research examines the intrinsic motivation of the main character based on the Basic Psychological Needs Theory, which suggests that intrinsic motivation is driven by three core psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The study explores how these needs are reflected in the character’s actions and dialogue. Using a descriptive-qualitative method, the movie script is analyzed as a primary data source, using document analysis techniques. Data were collected through an observation table and interpreted through content analysis. The findings reveal that the protagonist’s intrinsic motivation is primarily fueled by the need for competence, as shown in seven key moments where she strives for mastery. Autonomy is also significant, seen in six instances where the character resists external pressures to assert control over her choices. Relatedness, identified in five moments, provides emotional support that sustains her motivation. These results highlight the importance of competence in driving personal achievement, while autonomy and relatedness offer essential support. The study shows how films like Joy depict psychological needs and suggests that such portrayals can inspire viewers to pursue their own goals by fostering autonomy, competence, and meaningful relationships.

Abstract

In  the  literature  field,  the  investigation  of  self-identity  within  cultural  and  historical  contexts  offers insights into the life experience and self-belief of the character. This article aims to examine the portrayal of  self-identity  in An  Enola  Holmes  Mystery:  The  Case  of  the  Missing  Marquess,  a  book  from  Nancy Springer’s Enola Holmes series, utilizing post-structuralist  literary  theory  as  its  theoretical  foundation. The article explores how the main character, Enola Holmes, negotiates and navigates her self-identity in a patriarchal Victorian society. It also investigates Enola’s identity construction within traditional gender norms and expectations. This study employed a descriptive methodology to examine the dynamicity of its main characters and plots. Referring to Jacques Derrida’s post-structuralism  theory  and  the  concepts  of differance, the findings revealed that the fluidity of Enola Holmes’ self-identity challenges the traditional gender roles and binary expectations in the period, which emphasizes the instability of the meaning and self-identity. The primary findings show the character’s fluid identity, such as rejecting traditional gender roles,  embracing  individuality,  affirming  independence,  and  challenging  authority  figures.  The  second one is the character’s responses, such as seeking validation, desire for freedom, frustration with double standards, longing for acceptance, and oppression in femininity. The last one is the character’s self-discovery, such as embracing fluid identity and recognizing one’s value of femininity.The implications of this study are to enrich the literary study and to encourage readers and academics to critically engage with the literary text by exploring complex concepts like self-identity and post-structuralism.

Abstract

This study explores the application of cognitive stylistics in analyzing Ariana Grande’s song "Intro (End of theWorld)" through schema theory. Schema theory is employed to understand how listeners interpret the song’s lyrics by activating pre-existing mental frameworks. The background of this research includes examining rhetorical devices used by the artist, such as personification, similes, metaphors, and hyperbole, to convey complex emotions and ideas. The methodology consists of a detailed textual analysis of the lyrics, focusing on identifying and interpreting these devices concerning the song’s thematic elements. The findings indicate that the song addresses themes of relationship evaluation, self-discovery, and the intricacies of interpersonal connections. The metaphorical language, melodic and lyrical structure, and vocal delivery contribute to the song’s emotional depth and thematic complexity. The study concludes that the use of schema theory helps elucidate how these stylistic elements influence listeners’ understanding and emotional engagement with the song, enhancing their overall experience.
