Abstract

Student engagement is a central element of the learning experience in elementary education, reflecting students’ behavioral, cognitive, and emotional participation in classroom activities. Rather than developing in isolation, engagement emerges through the interaction between students’ individual characteristics and the social support available within their surrounding environment. This investigation addresses the relationship between social support and student engagement among elementary school students, as well as its relevance for the planning of needs-oriented guidance and counseling services. A quantitative survey approach was employed involving 100 students from grades IV to VI. Data were gathered through questionnaires and examined using a SEM-PLS approach with the support of SmartPLS 4. The analysis indicates that differences in students’ engagement levels are closely linked to the degree of social support they receive. These findings suggest that guidance and counseling services should adopt a collaborative approach involving families and the school environment to effectively strengthen student engagement.

Abstract

This study aims to explore how final-year university students interpret the local Madurese value of séttong dârâ-trétan dhibi’ as manifested through peer interactions and social support within informal spaces such as coffee shops. The research employed a qualitative phenomenological approach to capture participants’ live experiences in dealing with academic pressure, particularly during the thesis complection period. Participantswere selected through purposive sampling with three main criteria: (1) final-year students (minimum seven semester); (2) actively involved in meaningful peer support interactions (emotional, informational, or academic) within gathering places such as cafes or coffee stalls; and (3) willing to openly share their experinces. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and non-participant observations. The analysis was conducted continuously through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings reveal that cafes and coffee shops have shifted in meaning beyond leisure spaces, transforming into essential safe spaces for finally-year students. These spaces represent the cultural essence of séttong dârâ-trétan dhibi’, reflecting solidarity and peer brotherhood amid academic stress. Peer interactions in these setting are not merely casual conversations but constitute reciprocal exchanges of life experiences and crucial social support that contribute to mental well-being and academic persistence. Thus, séttong dârâ-trétan dhibi’ serves as a form of collective coping rooted in local cultural solidarity.

Abstract

Drug abuse among adolescents is a significant social problem that threatens psychosocial development and long-term social functioning. This study aims to explore the dynamics of family communication and peer influence in the drug abuse experiences of a male adolescent undergoing rehabilitation at the Subdirectorate of Crisis Mitigation Center (SMCC), Surabaya. Using a qualitative approach with a single-case study design, data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews with the primary participant (H, 17 years old), a rehabilitation counselor assistant, and the participant's biological father, complemented by observation and documentation over a four-month rehabilitation period. Thematic analysis revealed three interconnected themes: suboptimal family communication, characterized by low conversation orientation, the emotional impact of parental divorce, and absence of emotional support; peer influence through behavioral normalization, repeated invitations, direct modeling, and threat of social exclusion; and drug use as a psychological coping mechanism to fill emotional voids and resolve identity confusion during the identity versus role confusion developmental stage (Erikson, 1968). The study contributes a nuanced understanding of how weak family communication and strong peer influence mutually reinforce adolescent vulnerability to drug abuse, integrating Family Communication Patterns Theory (FCPT) with Erikson's psychosocial development theory within a rehabilitation context. Implications for guidance and counseling practice include the application of Gestalt therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), family resilience strengthening, and assertive communication training.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between adversity quotient and academic burnout among female students at Madrasah Aliyah Ummul Quro Putri. The research objective was to determine the extent to which internal resilience, specifically the capacity to overcome difficulties, correlates with the level of academic exhaustion experienced in a high-pressure educational setting. Employing a quantitative correlational design, the study utilized a saturated sampling technique, involving the entire population of 70 female students from the 2024–2026 academic year as data sources. Data collection was executed through structured questionnaires based on the CO²RE framework for adversity quotient and the four dimensions of academic burnout, with analysis performed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation via IBM SPSS Statistics. The main findings revealed a significant and strong negative correlation between the two variables, demonstrating that higher levels of adversity quotient are consistently associated with lower levels of academic burnout. These results indicate that a student’s internal ability to manage stress and perceive challenges as surmountable serves as a critical protective factor against academic burnout. The significance of this study lies in its empirical evidence that burnout is not merely a product of external workload but is deeply tied to internal resilience. The implications suggest that educational institutions, particularly Islamic schools, should prioritize resilience-building programs to enhance students' psychological hardiness, thereby ensuring long-term academic productivity and well-being.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of social media use on body dissatisfaction among high school adolescents in Pangandaran Regency. Body dissatisfaction refers to negative feelings and thoughts about one’s physical appearance, often arising from discrepancies between actual and ideal body images. Social media, as a platform that emphasizes visual content, has been identified as a significant contributor to the formation of unrealistic beauty standards that may influence adolescents’ self-perception. This study employed a quantitative correlational design with a simple linear regression analysis technique. The population consisted of 1,507 students from five public high schools in Pangandaran Regency, and a sample of 418 students was selected using stratified random sampling. Research instruments included the Social Media Use Scale and the Body Dissatisfaction Scale, both of which had been tested for validity and reliability. The results of data analysis revealed a positive and significant correlation between social media use and body dissatisfaction (r = 0.212; p < 0.001). The coefficient of determination (R²) = 0.045 indicates that 4.5% of the variance in body dissatisfaction can be explained by social media use. These findings suggest that higher social media engagement is associated with greater body dissatisfaction among adolescents.
