Abstract

Early childhood education (ECE) plays a crucial role in shaping the cognitive, social, and emotional development of children. One of the main challenges at this stage is egocentrism, defined as the inability of children to understand perspectives other than their own, which can hinder the development of empathy and social skills. This study aims to examine an innovative strategy to reduce egocentrism among children aged 4 to 6 years through traditional games based on STEAM principles (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), specifically the traditional game of Engklek, which is rich in cultural and character-building values. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach with a total sample of 311 kindergarten children from Madura, East Java. Data were collected through observational checklists focusing on egocentric behaviors and social character during gameplay sessions consisting of three phases: preparation, gameplay, and reflection. The results demonstrate that Engklek, when integrated with STEAM principles, effectively enhances four key character indicators: tolerance, discipline, self-control, and empathy. The overall average score significantly increased from 2.33 to 3.55 after the intervention, indicating a reduction in egocentric behavior and an improvement in social awareness among the children. This game not only teaches children to follow rules and take turns but also fosters critical thinking and collaboration skills within a joyful and contextual learning environment. These findings align with existing literature that emphasizes the importance of integrating local cultural values and STEAM principles in character education for early childhood. This study offers important implications for educators and policymakers to develop culturally responsive early childhood curricula that integrate traditional games with STEAM-based learning and to provide training for teachers to optimize educational media that support character strengthening and social skills development. Consequently, early childhood education can become more holistic, humane, and relevant to children's developmental needs and contemporary challenges

Abstract

The low level of children's independence is the background of this study. To increase independence, a positive reinforcement strategy is applied as a method of forming consistent positive behavior and character. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of positive reinforcement on the independence of early childhood. This study uses a quantitative approach with an experimental method. The subjects consisted of 16 children, namely 9 girls and 7 boys in the odd semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. Data processing was carried out using the Paired Sample T Test analysis which was carried out with the help of the SPSS Statistics IMB program. The results of the research findings, there is a significance value of .000, because the significance value of the T-Test <0.05 (.000 <0.05), then Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. In addition, there was an increase in the level of children's independence after being given treatment, which was seen from three aspects observed. In the initiative aspect, such as tidying up stationery by giving it a star symbol, there was an increase in the category (BSB) from 0% to 31%, category (BSH) from 19% to 31%, while category (MB) decreased from 56% to 38%, and category (BB) decreased from 25% to 0%. In the aspect of responsibility observed through the approach to children, the BSB category increased from 0% to 31%, BSH from 25% to 38%, and MB decreased from 75% to 31%. While in the aspect of self-control which was strengthened through giving praise, the BSB category increased from 0% to 25%. roviding various positive reinforcements that vary makes children feel appreciated so that it can attract children's attention to carry out independent actions continuously.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between parenting styles and the social behavior of children aged 5-6 years at TK Kelurahan Tavanjuka, Palu City. The sample consisted of 25 children selected purposively. The research used a quantitative correlational approach with data collected through observation, questionnaires, and documentation. Results showed that 32% of parents applied an authoritarian style, 24% democratic, and 44% permissive. Regarding children’s social behavior, 8% were categorized as Very Well Developed (BSB), 25.33% as Well Developed (BSH), 49.33% as Developing (MB), and 17.33% as Not Yet Developed (BB). Children with authoritarian parenting exhibited high discipline and responsibility but low independence. In contrast, the democratic style optimally supported all three aspects, while permissive parenting was associated with lower discipline and responsibility. Spearman’s correlation analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between parenting styles and children’s social behavior (r = 0.511; p = 0.001), indicating that better parenting styles correspond to better social behavior in children. These findings emphasize the importance of balanced and responsive parenting to support early childhood social development.

Abstract

Speech delay in early childhood is an increasingly common developmental problem that impacts on children's communication, social and learning skills. This study aims to explain parents' understanding of early childhood speech delay, including knowledge of signs, causal factors, and intervention strategies used in the home environment. A qualitative approach with a case study method was chosen as the approach and type of this research. The research subjects consisted of eight parents in RT 22 Kebun Bunga Village, East Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, who have children aged 3 to 6 years. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and participatory observation, then analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing stages. The results indicates that most parents only understood speech delay in general without recognizing specific language development indicators. The known causative factors are limited to the use of gadgets and lack of verbal interaction, while innate factors such as medical or neurological conditions are less understood. Interventions are still simple and unsystematic, such as inviting children to continue interacting and sending children to PAUD institutions. This finding indicates the need to increase parental literacy related to language development.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of parental role modeling and parenting styles on egocentrism in early childhood. The age of 4–6 years is considered a golden age, serving as a critical foundation for personality and character development, where parents play a central role in shaping children’s social behavior. This research employed a quantitative method with a survey approach. The participants were 177 parents of children aged 4–6 years. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed through Spearman’s correlation test, as the data were not normally distributed. The findings indicate that parental role modeling has a significant relationship with children’s egocentrism; the higher the level of role modeling, the lower the tendency of egocentric behavior. Parenting styles also showed a significant relationship, although the effect was weaker than that of role modeling. Furthermore, a positive correlation was found between parental role modeling and parenting styles. Among the parenting styles, the democratic approach was identified as the most influential in reducing egocentric tendencies in early childhood. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the importance of parental role modeling and parenting styles in minimizing egocentrism during early childhood. Providing consistent positive role models and applying democratic parenting can effectively foster healthier social attitudes in children.

Abstract

This theoretical study explores the interconnection between language and culture in early childhood education through the perspective of Vygotsky's sociocultural theory. Language is not just a means of communication, but also a cultural artifact that is shaped by and shapes social interactions. Drawing on concepts such as Proximal Development Zones (ZPDs), this study conducted a systematic literature review using PRISMA guidelines, analyzing empirical studies from the last ten years across leading databases. The findings of this study reveal that sociocultural theory provides a strong pedagogical framework for understanding how cultural dynamics affect language acquisition and cognitive development in diverse early childhood contexts. This study highlights the importance of integrating linguistic and cultural awareness into early childhood education to encourage inclusive and meaningful learning experiences.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of developing social interaction skills in early childhood in the formation of social intelligence in the future. However, many early childhood still experience difficulties in communicating, collaborating, and resolving conflicts positively. Therefore, to improve social interaction skills in group B students at RA Al-Hidayah Pronojiwo, researchers packaged traditional game activities in the form of Pekan Dolanan. The research method used was classroom action research (PTK) which was implemented in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of 4 stages. Pekan Dolanan activities were designed in a structured and fun way through various traditional games that emphasized aspects of collaboration and active involvement of children. The results of the research conducted at RA Al-Hidayah Pronojiwo showed that there was a significant increase in children's social interaction skills. Quantitative data recorded an increase from 37.5% in the pre-action to 81.3% in the second cycle. The conclusion of this study is that Pekan Dolanan is an effective and relevant pedagogical approach to improving social interaction skills in early childhood.
