Abstract

The Baurung coastal area in Majene Regency has experienced significant changes in vegetation cover due to rapid urbanization and development in the last decade, leading to a decline in green open space and the quality of coastal ecosystems. This study aims to analyze vegetation changes in the Baurung coastal area using a high-resolution satellite imagery approach combined with the Kriging spatial interpolation method. This technique produces detailed and accurate vegetation prediction maps, enabling the identification of areas experiencing degradation and areas with high vegetation cover that need to be maintained. The results indicate a significant reduction in natural vegetation with an increase in built-up areas along the coast, potentially exacerbating the risks of erosion, tidal flooding, and ecological degradation. This approach provides an important tool for adaptive and sustainable green open space management and serves as a basis for climate change mitigation policies in the Baurung coastal area.

Abstract

Community development and empowerment are two key concepts in social development that complement each other. Community development is understood as a systematic process that emphasizes improving social, economic, and institutional welfare through active community participation in planning and evaluating development. Meanwhile, community empowerment focuses more on strengthening capacity, independence, and the ability of communities to manage resources and make decisions that affect their lives. The integration of these two concepts is important for realizing inclusive and sustainable development. This study uses a literature review method with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were obtained from books, scientific journals, and policy documents related to community development and empowerment, then analyzed through content analysis to identify relevant concepts, approaches, and best practices. The results of the study show that there are various approaches that can be used, including participatory, rights-based, social economy, and technology and innovation approaches. These four approaches have been proven to increase the effectiveness of development programs, particularly in the agriculture and forestry sectors. However, challenges such as limited resources, low participation, and policy inconsistencies remain obstacles that need to be overcome. This study emphasizes that community development and empowerment should not only be oriented towards improving economic welfare, but also include social and ecological sustainability. Therefore, development strategies based on participation, local wisdom, and innovation are key to strengthening community independence while preserving the sustainability of natural resources

Abstract

Monitoring changes in peat swamp forest biodiversity is a necessity for identifying and accounting for the impacts of various factors that cause degradation and deforestation. Information on the condition of this biodiversity can be obtained using Landsat 8 Imagery. This imagery allows for a more efficient, effective, and systematic analysis of changes in vegetation density. This study aimed to assess the dynamic changes in peat swamp forest biodiversity over approximately the last 10 years. The research findings indicate that the rates of degradation and deforestation (16.86%) are higher than the rate of regrowth (6.27%)5. This suggests that the ecosystem's condition is experiencing a significant decline. This decline is characterized by a tendency for the diversity, richness, and evenness of flora species to decrease. The study concludes that the floristic dynamics at the Rungan sub-watershed have declined, which can also affect the existence and habitat of its fauna.

Abstract

Cajuput (Melaleuca cajuputi L.) is a Multi-Purpose Tree Species (MPTS) with high economic and ecological value, yet propagation through seeds often encounters constraints related to seed viability and seedling uniformity. This study aimed to examine the effects of natural and synthetic plant growth regulators (PGRs) and growing media combinations on the growth performance of cajuput stem cuttings. The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of the Faculty of Agricultural Science and Health, University of Timor, using a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two factors: types of PGR (Rootone F, shallot extract 15 mL/L, and aloe vera extract 15 mL/L) and media composition (soil:rice husk charcoal, soil:cow manure, and soil:rice husk charcoal:cow manure), each with three replications. Observed parameters included sprouting speed, shoot length, number of leaves, root length, and cutting mortality rate. The results showed a significant interaction between PGR type and media composition on sprouting speed at 10 weeks after planting (WAP), with the combination of shallot extract and soil:rice husk charcoal medium producing the best result. Aloe vera extract as a single treatment provided optimal growth for shoot length, leaf number, and root length, while also reducing cutting mortality compared to other treatments. Moreover, soil:rice husk charcoal medium generally supported better initial growth due to its high porosity and aeration. Therefore, the use of aloe vera extract combined with soil:rice husk charcoal medium is recommended as an effective approach for vegetative propagation of cajuput.

Abstract

Peatland fires have been a long-standing topic of discussion in combating greenhouse gas effects, especially in Indonesia, which has the largest tropical peatlands in the world. However, peatland fires have their own complexities, one of which is that hotspots do not always reflect the amount of carbon emissions. This study was conducted in the Kahayan-Sebangau Peatland Hydrological Unitary (KHG) by integrating several spatial data sets: MODIS hotspot distribution data from 2019 to 2022, peat thickness data, forest area status data, land cover data from 2018 and 2022 with carbon content values based on the 2015 national guidelines of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK). Carbon emissions were estimated from changes in land cover and carbon reserves per hectare. The results show that Production Forests (HP) contribute >40% of total hotspots and >80% of carbon emissions, while Conversion Production Forests (HPK) have the highest hotspot density at 1.08 hotspots/km2 and the highest carbon emissions are found in the deep peat thickness class. This study found that the status of forest areas and peat thickness greatly determine the amount of carbon emissions from a fire, as indicated by the distribution of hotspots.

Abstract

The Special Purpose Forest Area (KHDTK) of Lambung Mangkurat University plays a vital role as a natural laboratory for research, education, and conservation. Monitoring vegetation cover is essential to evaluate the effectiveness of sustainable forest management. This study analyzes the temporal and spatial dynamics of vegetation cover in KHDTK ULM during 2019–2024 using the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) derived from Google Earth Engine (GEE) and assesses the net change over the period. Sentinel-2 imagery was processed into annual composites in GEE and analyzed through EVI classification combined with spatial analysis in ArcGIS. The results show that mean EVI increased from 0.438 in 2019 to 0.529 in 2024, representing a 20.77% rise. Dense vegetation expanded by +1163.26 ha (+111.74%), while medium and non-vegetation classes declined significantly. These changes indicate a major transition from medium to dense vegetation, particularly in the forest core, where as reductions were concentrated along edges dominated by grasslands and open areas. The findings demonstrate that conservation, rehabilitation, and management efforts in KHDTK ULM have effectively enhanced forest recovery and provide a scientific basis for adaptive and sustainable forest education management.

Abstract

This study was aimed to analyze and describe the characteristics of vegetation in forested areas in and around the Cultivation Rights area of oil palm plantations (PT. GAP and PT. CWJU). Vegetation data was collected using a quadratic plot technique, where the plot itself was assigned using purposive systematic sampling. Vegetation data in the research plots were analyzed using Microsoft Excel by involving index calculations, namely the Important Value Index/INP or Important Species Value/NPJ, species dominance index, diversity index, richness index, evenness index, and species similarity index. The results of the study in the observation plots have recorded 43 species of woody plants that can be grouped into 34 genera and 21 families. Eugenia uniflora and Shorea macrantha at the research site are more dominant in all growth phases. It is indicated that there is no concentration of dominance by a species in the research plot (C = 0.10 – 0.14), the H’ value is classified as moderate/moderate stability (1 < H’ < 3.22) which reflects sufficient species diversity and relative abundance, the richness index ranges from 1.90 – 2.32 which is generally low (R < 3.5), the evenness index ranges from fairly even to almost even (E = 0.62 – 0.94), and the species similarity index of 0.61 is classified as moderate. Abstract

ABSTRACTS The Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) Program is a global initiative aimed at reducing carbon emissions from the forestry sector. Central Kalimantan has served as a pilot province for REDD+ implementation in Indonesia since 2007 through various initiatives led by the government and international organizations. This study aims to analyze the initial implementation dynamics of REDD+ in Central Kalimantan in 2007, focusing on policies, implementing actors, and key challenges encountered. The research applies a descriptive qualitative approach, using literature review and policy document analysis. The results indicate that the period 2007–2012 was the readiness phase, during which institutional and policy frameworks were developed; the period 2013–2014 marked the implementation phase; and the period 2016 to the present represents the result-based payment phase. However, the early implementation faced several major challenges, including limited inter-agency coordination, low technical capacity, and weak synchronization between national and regional policies. Despite these obstacles, the early stage of REDD+ implementation in Central Kalimantan has provided an important foundation for the future development of climate and forest governance policies in Indonesia.
