Abstract

This research seeks to provide a detailed analysis of the importance of Paran (פָּארָן), a desert mentioned in the Tanakh, the sacred text of Judaism, specifically in the Book of Genesis (Bereshīt/ בְּרֵאשִׁית‎) Article 21 Verse 21, through a Philological Study. Philology is a method used in the study of theology and religion to analyze the linguistic structure and meaning of religious texts. This involves comparing a text with other texts that may have different linguistic characteristics. In this particular research, three different text sources for Bereshīt 21: 21 will be examined: the Tanakh in Hebrew, the Targum in Aramaic, and the Samaritan version of the Torah in Judeo-Arabic. This research establishes that Paran now refers to a region denoting the location of the Hijaz or the Arabian plains. Several Turāts studies have revealed a clear correlation between the traditions of Judaism and Islam. This study has created possibilities for additional investigations into the predictions of Ishma'el, the offspring of Abraham, within the traditions of both religions.

Abstract

This study examines the importance of multicultural education in Indonesia, a country characterised by rich ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity. With a population of approximately 250 million people and over 300 ethnic groups, as well as 200 languages, this diversity can be both a blessing and a challenge if not managed properly. Multicultural education plays a crucial role in shaping national identity and fostering intercultural understanding and tolerance. However, its implementation faces various challenges, particularly in remote areas such as the Wana tribe in Central Sulawesi. Despite a strong interest in learning, limited access to education and a lack of understanding of multicultural values among the younger generation pose serious problems. The research method used was descriptive, qualitative, and ethnographic, drawing on the researcher's direct experience with the local community. The results indicate that multicultural education is not only crucial for preventing social conflict but also for strengthening unity in diversity. Challenges include disparities in educational facilities and low teacher competency. Therefore, greater government attention and inclusive policies are needed to improve the quality of education and strengthen cultural identity amidst the tide of modernization.

Abstract

The classification of Islamic movements—such as modernist, neo-modernist, traditionalist, reformist, revivalist, and fundamentalist—cannot be separated from the concept of tajdid as conveyed by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). However, the translation of tajdid into Indonesian using equivalent terms often results in semantic bias and detachment from the original epistemological framework of tajdid itself. This study aims to examine the epistemological perspective of translating the term tajdid into the Indonesian language. A qualitative approach was employed using descriptive-analytical methods based on library research. Data were collected through documentation techniques and analyzed using data inventory, classification, and interpretation. The findings reveal that direct translation of tajdid into Indonesian—using terms such as reformation, reformist, revivalist, or fundamentalist—frequently distorts the original epistemological structure embedded in tajdid. Therefore, this study recommends avoiding literal translations and instead suggests the use of transliteration as a more epistemologically appropriate and culturally sensitive alternative.

Abstract

This study explores the persistence of Budi Daya Faith as a form of New Religious Movement (NRM) in Lembang Subdistrict, West Bandung Regency, Indonesia. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation over two years, the research examines how followers of Budi Daya maintain a coherent spiritual system across five dimensions of religiosity: belief in Hyang Tunggal as the Supreme Divine, symbolic ritual practices, oral transmission of sacred knowledge, personal spiritual experience, and ethical consequences in daily life. Despite facing marginalization and state regulatory limitations, the community survives by adapting its doctrine, preserving cultural expressions, and cultivating harmony with nature and society. This study concludes that Budi Daya Faith is not merely an ancestral tradition but a legitimate form of religious identity. It offers valuable insights into religious pluralism, the dynamics of indigenous belief systems, and the urgency of recognizing spiritual expressions outside of state-defined religions.

Abstract

This research investigates the transformation of religious behavior in the community of Tarogong Kidul, Garut Regency, within the rapidly evolving landscape of social media. Framed through a sociological-anthropological lens and guided by Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of habitus, the study applies a qualitative descriptive method using a case study approach. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and document analysis, with triangulation employed to ensure validity. The analysis reveals a significant shift in religious expression—from deeply internalized spiritual practices to symbolic and commodified forms—driven by factors such as technological advancement, urbanization, and socioeconomic change. Social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and YouTube have emerged as influential arenas for da’wah and religious engagement, yet they also contribute to the fragmentation of traditional religious authority and the marketization of faith. Although public participation in routine religious activities appears to decline, adaptive religious centers like the Grand Mosque of Garut demonstrate increased relevance and engagement. At the same time, the cultural fabric of Sundanese Islam faces challenges from unfiltered global content, often rendering communities passive consumers. However, improvements in education and income empower individuals to reinterpret religious values within modern, urban realities. This study concludes that what occurs in Tarogong Kidul is not a break from tradition, but a dynamic negotiation between inherited religious habitus and new social structures of the digital age. The research offers theoretical insight into the interplay between tradition and modernity, methodological contributions through a robust qualitative design, and practical value for designing inclusive, media-sensitive religious outreach strategies in contemporary urban societies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Buya Yahya's da'wah strategies through social media platforms YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram by focusing on the integration of communication patterns, audience interaction, and the overall effectiveness of da'wah in the digital age. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using content analysis and interview techniques. The findings reveal that Buya Yahya's da'wah across these three platforms adapts to the technical logic and user culture of each medium. YouTube is utilized for delivering in-depth and educational lectures, Facebook is optimized for interactive engagement and real-time responses to contemporary issues, while Instagram targets younger audiences with short, emotive, and visually driven messages. The discussion draws on the theoretical frameworks of Hypermediated Religion and Platformization of Religion, which emphasize that digital da'wah is not merely disseminated through various media, but also mediated and reshaped through user interactions and platform algorithms. The study concludes that Buya Yahya’s approach successfully integrates cross-platform da'wah strategies that are both participatory and adaptive to the needs of digital religious communities. This research offers both theoretical and practical contributions to the development of contemporary digital da'wah models that are not only communicative but also transformative in fostering contextual religious awareness.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the representation of women in Ustadz Adi Hidayat’s (UAH) sermons on YouTube, to analyze how such discourse is produced and reproduced within the socio-cultural context of Indonesia, and to identify its ideological implications for the understanding of gender equality in Islam. Employing Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, the research explores three major themes: education and gender identity, women’s socio-economic roles, and historical figures as role models. The data were collected from UAH’s YouTube sermons, including both full-length lectures and viral short clips. The findings reveal that women’s representation is ambivalent: women are glorified, yet such glorification is bounded by normative constraints that tie them to domestic and spiritual roles. The discourse is produced within Indonesia’s patriarchal culture and reproduced through the algorithmic logic of social media that amplifies normative messages. Its ideological implication is the reinforcement of a new form of patriarchy termed affirmative patriarchy, a mechanism of control that works not through rejection, but through conditional recognition and symbolic praise. The main challenge of this research lies in its limited scope, focusing solely on UAH’s sermons, and in its methodological constraint of not examining audience reception. Practically, this study recommends promoting digital religious literacy and developing more egalitarian preaching strategies. This research proposes the concept of affirmative patriarchy, which extends the study of gender discourse in digital Islam and enriches critical discourse analysis within the field of religion and gender studies.

Abstract

This research is based on the initial concept of Buddhist teachings, which emphasize overcoming suffering. However, as time went on, some Buddhist practices were deemed not to have fully reduced suffering and social problems, giving rise to the Humanistic Buddhism movement. The purpose of this study is to examine the humanistic values in Buddhist teachings practiced by the Indonesian Tzu Chi Buddhist Foundation and to examine the strategies employed to develop and preserve these values. This research employed qualitative methods with sociological and phenomenological approaches. Data were collected from primary and secondary sources, including the Tipiṭaka/Tripṭaka, Sūtra Mahāyāna, books, magazines, online media, as well as observation, documentation, and interviews. Interviews were conducted with leaders, volunteers, and beneficiaries of the Tzu Chi Foundation in West Jakarta using the snowball technique. Data were analyzed using the Miles-Huberman and Saldana techniques, while their validity was tested by triangulation and extended research time. The results of the study indicate that the humanist values contained in the teachings of Buddha and Master Cheng Yen include equality, love, compassion, altruism, tolerance, brotherhood, wisdom, concern for nature, generosity, morality, patience, sincerity, gratitude and open-mindedness. These values are implemented in four missions and eight Dharma footprints, namely charitable missions, health, education, humanist culture, international disaster relief, bone marrow donation, environmental conservation, and community volunteer involvement. This study concludes that the development and preservation of humanist values in Tzu Chi is carried out through resource mobilization, utilization of political opportunities, and framing processes, so that Tzu Chi can be understood as a unique Buddhist social religious movement that is also reformist in nature.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of Islamic preaching content delivered by K.H. Ahmad Bahauddin Nursalim (Gus Baha), Ustadz Adi Hidayat, and Ustadz Khalid Basalamah via YouTube and TikTok on the religious knowledge and tolerance attitudes of the urban Muslim community in Bogor, Indonesia. Employing a sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach, the research integrates quantitative survey data analyzed via multiple regression with qualitative insights gathered from in-depth interviews with local religious figures and community members. The findings reveal that 88.2% of the variance in religious tolerance behavior is attributable to the consumption of digital religious content on these platforms. While TikTok contributes to the rapid dissemination of visualized religious messages, YouTube offers more structured, in-depth religious discourse, both of which reinforce spiritual awareness and interfaith empathy. The study concludes that social media platforms play a transformative role in shaping urban religiosity, functioning as digital spaces for ethical formation, theological education, and inclusive civic identity. Theoretically, this research contributes to the growing discourse on digital religious literacy, demonstrating how algorithm-driven environments mediate new modes of religious engagement. Practically, it provides actionable insights for religious institutions and policymakers to design adaptive and pluralist religious communication strategies in an increasingly mediated society.

Abstract

This study explores how peci (traditional cap) and sarong are represented as cultural-religious symbols that shape the collective identity of the Muslim Madurese community in Kamal District, Bangkalan, East Java. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and Stuart Hall’s theory of representation, the research was conducted through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The study employed an emic perspective by immersing the researcher in the everyday life of the Telang Dalem community. Findings reveal that peci and sarong are more than religious attire; they are symbols of identity transmitted across generations through family traditions, reinforced by the exemplary conduct of local kiai (Islamic scholars), and embedded in social-religious practices. These symbols serve as expressions of lived piety and loyalty to the moral authority of kiai, while also negotiating between inherited tradition and modern influences. The study concludes that such cultural symbols play a strategic role in preserving local religious identity. Theoretically, it contributes to the anthropology of Islam and identity studies; practically, it offers a model of contextualized religiosity that remains resilient amid social transformation.
