Abstract

This research aims to improve students' motivation to learn mathematics, specifically in addition and subtraction materials with a maximum result of 20, through the implementation of the Science Technology Society (STS) approach. The subjects of this study were 12 first-grade students at SDN 114617 Lobu Huala. This study is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) following the Arikunto model, which consists of two cycles, each including planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Data on learning motivation were collected through observation sheets covering six indicators: interest in following the lesson, enthusiasm in exploration, courage to ask questions, persistence in completing assignments, group cooperation, and activeness in demonstrating results. The data were analyzed using simple quantitative percentage techniques and qualified based on established criteria. The results showed that the application of the STS approach significantly increased students' learning motivation. This is evidenced by the increase in the average classical percentage of learning motivation from 51.5% (Moderate category) in Cycle I to 83.5% (High category) in Cycle II. This improvement was driven by the use of concrete media from the surrounding environment, which made abstract material more meaningful for students. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the Science Technology Society (STS) approach is an effective solution to enhance learning motivation and the active involvement of first-grade students in mathematics learning

Abstract

This study examines the role of Al-Jam’iyatul Washliyah in the spread of Islam in Indonesia, focusing on how Al-Washliyah, as an Islamic organization, contributed to the process of Islamization. The research objectives include uncovering the organization's history, its da'wah development strategies such as establishing madrasahs and adapting to local cultures in areas like Toba Batak and efforts to preserve museum buildings designated as cultural heritage in 2024. The methodology employs a descriptive qualitative approach with deductive analysis, data collection through literature studies, observation, and structured as well as open interviews with museum curator Silmi on March 11, 2026, at the Al-Washliyah Museum in Medan. The findings reveal that Al-Washliyah emerged from the initiatives of figures like Sheikh Muhammad Ya’kub and the waqf of Datuk Muhammad Ali; it managed hundreds of schools by 1941, spread da'wah to Mentawai, Karo, and abroad and implemented cultural adaptation strategies, aqidah development, and supervision to prevent apostasy. The museum faces challenges such as a lack of original artifacts but serves as an open educational center for the wider community.

Abstract

The problem in this research lies in the lack of students' spatial literacy skills in the material "knowing maps" especially in understanding symbols, distance, and determining location. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to describe in depth how students' spatial literacy skills in the material "knowing maps" in grade IV SDN 060921 Medan. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach method, involving grade IV teachers and grade IV students. Data collection was carried out through interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using the modelMiles and Huberman. The results of the study showed that the average spatial literacy ability in the map recognition material was 63.75, or had not yet reached the Learning Objective Completion Criteria (KKTP). This was because students found it difficult to read symbols, indicate directions, and determine the location of an area. Furthermore, teachers focused solely on map images in textbooks, so students felt they lacked understanding. The solution to this problem is to teach map material slowly, connect it to students' real lives, and create digital map media.. To realize this solution, the fourth-grade teacher sought resources to support the creation and use of the designed media. Furthermore, the teacher committed to teaching the material slowly and connecting it to the students' real lives.

Abstract

Reading literacy is an essential competency that must be mastered by elementary school students, especially in facing the demands of 21st-century learning. However, students’ reading literacy skills in Indonesia are still relatively low, particularly at higher-order cognitive levels. This study aims to analyze the reading literacy skills of fifth-grade students based on cognitive process levels, namely finding information (L1), interpretation and integration (L2), and evaluation and reflection (L3) in descriptive texts. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The subjects were 19 fifth-grade students of SD Negeri 060886 Kota Medan. Data were collected through a written test consisting of reading literacy questions developed based on learning objectives and cognitive processes. The results showed that students achieved high performance at the level of finding information (L1), with percentages reaching up to 100%. However, their performance tended to decrease at higher cognitive levels, particularly in interpretation and integration (L2) and evaluation and reflection (L3). Some students still experienced difficulties in connecting information, understanding implicit meanings, and providing critical responses to the text. These findings indicate that students’ higher-order thinking skills in reading literacy have not yet developed optimally. Therefore, it is necessary to design more systematic learning and assessment strategies to improve students’ critical reading skills.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze research trends and directions in climate change education within science learning through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. Climate change has become a critical global issue that requires not only technological solutions but also educational interventions to improve students’ scientific literacy and environmental awareness. This study adopted the PRISMA 2020 framework, consisting of identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion stages. A total of 500 articles were initially identified from Google Scholar and ResearchGate using Publish or Perish, with keywords “Climate Change Education” and “Science Learning” (2015–2025). After a rigorous selection process, 12 articles met the inclusion criteria, and 6 articles were analyzed in depth. The data were analyzed using bibliometric analysis with VOSviewer, synthesis matrix, and Critical Journal Review (CJR). The findings indicate that research trends are dominated by themes such as climate education and student engagement, scientific literacy and sustainability, inquiry-based learning, family involvement, and climate impact studies. Furthermore, the results reveal that integrating climate change topics into science learning enhances students’ critical thinking skills, environmental awareness, and engagement in real-world problem solving. However, research gaps remain, particularly in the integration of climate change education into formal curricula, experimental studies, and research in developing countries. This study provides important insights for educators, researchers, and policymakers in developing more effective and contextual science learning related to climate change.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the ability of fourth-grade students at SDN 060926 Medan to read and comprehend informational texts in Bahasa Indonesia learning, as measured through two learning objectives derived from the Grade IV Indonesian Language Curriculum. The first learning objective focuses on students' ability to identify the main ideas, key information, and factual content of informational texts, which is examined through three cognitive processes: understanding, application, and reasoning. The second learning objective focuses on students' ability to use, critically evaluate, and reflect on information from texts, examined through three cognitive processes: finding information, interpretation and integration, and evaluation and reflection. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach with 20 Grade IV students as subjects, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through written tests, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Results indicate that students perform best on the understanding sub-aspect (70% proficient) under Learning Objective 1, and on finding information (65% proficient) under Learning Objective 2. The lowest performance was recorded on evaluation and reflection (35% proficient). These findings call for more varied and critical literacy instruction strategies in elementary schools.

Abstract

High-level literacy skills, particularly in determining main ideas and providing logical solutions, serve as a crucial foundation for elementary school students. This study aims to describe the difficulty profile of fifth-grade students in determining main ideas and to evaluate the quality of the test instruments used as a basis for instructional improvement. The research method employed is a descriptive quantitative approach involving fifth-grade elementary students as subjects. The research instrument consists of written tests featuring explanatory and narrative texts on environmental and cultural themes, classified based on Bloom's Taxonomy cognitive levels (C1-C6). The results indicate a significant imbalance in ability distribution, with 50% of students falling into the "Needs Guidance" category. Students demonstrated high proficiency (80%-90%) in basic literacy questions at the C1-C2 levels but experienced a drastic decline in scores (below 40%) for C4-C5 level questions requiring the determination of main ideas and logical solutions. The primary cognitive obstacle identified is the students' tendency to copy the first or last sentences of a paragraph without an abstracting process. This study concludes that the developed test instrument possesses a strong introductory power in identifying students' learning obstacles. It is recommended to utilize graphic organizer strategies and scaffolding techniques to assist students in visually mapping text structures.
