Abstract

Problem: Physical activity has a complex relationship with immune function in athletes, where moderate exercise is generally beneficial, but intense training may suppress immunity. This systematic literature review examines how different exercise intensities impact immune responses in athletes, aiming to identify optimal training parameters for immune health. Purpose: The aim of this systematic literature review is to analyze the effects of various exercise intensities on immune function in athletes to determine training parameters that support optimal immune health. Methods: This study utilized a systematic literature review approach, gathering and analyzing scientific articles on the effects of exercise on athlete immune function. Articles were sourced from Scopus using search terms such as "Exercise," "Physical Activity," "Sports," and "Immune Response," with a focus on studies published within the past five years that evaluate exercise interventions on immune enhancement in athletes. After collecting relevant articles, descriptive analysis was conducted to identify consistent patterns and findings. Results: Intense and prolonged exercise can lead to immunosuppression in athletes, increasing susceptibility to infections and chronic conditions. However, moderate exercise enhances immune function, promoting beneficial responses such as improved lymphocyte distribution and antibody production post-vaccination. Key immune markers like NLR, PLR, and SII offer valuable insights into athletes’ immune status and can assist in monitoring health and performance. Conclusion: Moderate exercise supports immune health, while intense exercise may suppress it. Athletes should balance training intensity and monitor immune markers to maintain optimal health and performance.

Abstract

Problem: The problem addressed in this study is the lack of comprehensive research exploring the relationship between motivation types, goal orientations, and toughness dimensions in university athletes. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to investigate the correlation between different types of motivation (intrinsic, extrinsic, and amotivation) and the dimensions of athletic toughness (mental, emotional, and bodily toughness) among Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) athletes. Additionally, this study examines how ego orientation and task orientation influence these toughness dimensions. Methods: This study employed a quantitative research design with a sample of 100 student-athletes from UKM who participated in the 2024 SUKIPT games. Data were collected using three standardized instruments: the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS), the Mental, Emotional, and Bodily Toughness Inventory (MeBTough), and the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ). Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to explore relationships between variables. Instrument reliability was confirmed through Cronbach’s alpha, with coefficients ranging from 0.79 to 0.85. Results: The findings reveal that intrinsic motivation strongly correlates with all toughness dimensions (mental r = 0.64, emotional r = 0.65, bodily r = 0.67), while extrinsic motivation exhibits moderate correlations (mental r = 0.53, emotional r = 0.51, bodily r = 0.49). Amotivation shows negative correlations with toughness dimensions (mental r = -0.50, emotional r = -0.49, bodily r = -0.51). Additionally, ego orientation has a moderate correlation with bodily toughness (r = 0.44), whereas task orientation exhibits weak correlations with toughness dimensions. Conclusion: This study highlights the pivotal role of intrinsic motivation in enhancing mental, emotional, and bodily toughness among athletes, while extrinsic motivation provides moderate support, and amotivation negatively impacts resilience. Ego orientation contributes more to physical resilience compared to task orientation. These findings emphasize the need for tailored interventions focusing on intrinsic motivation and balanced goal orientations to foster holistic athletic toughness.

Abstract

In the world of sports, psychological aspects cannot be separated from competition, there is a method that is often used in competitive sports that has been proven effective in increasing athlete self-confidence, namely mental imagery training because self-confidence is an important aspect in anything, especially for athletes in the pencak silat sport. This study aims to determine the significant effect of the Imagery training method on the self-confidence of pencak silat athletes in the trading category. The experimental method used in this study is a nonequivalent control group design involving 16 Pencak Silat Club Gerana athletes—sample selection using a purposive sampling technique. Treatment of 16 meetings to the sample intensively, before and after treatment the sample will be given the State Sport Confidence Inventory (SSCI) to measure self-confidence. After obtaining the data, it was analyzed using SPSS Version 26 using the t-test. The t value was 5.148 with a Sig value. (2-tailed) of 0.001 and the results for conventional training result t count of 3.479 with a Sig value. (2-tailed) of 0.010. Based on the test results, both treatments the Sig. (2-tailed) value of both treatments is <0.05 so that H0 is rejected. For the results of the Independent sample t-test which aims to determine the difference in the effect of different treatments, the Sig. (2-tailed) value is 0.001 <0.05. So it can be stated that there is a significant difference in the effect of mental imagery training with conventional training on the self-confidence of pencak silat athletes in the competing category. This study concludes that the imagery training method has a more significant effect than conventional training in the form of relaxation and is recommended to be applied to the pencak silat sport in the competing category because it has been proven to increase athlete self-confidence.
