Abstract

This study examines lexical borrowing and morphosyntactic variation in cross-border Malay speech communities along the Indonesia–Malaysia border, focusing on Entikong–Tebedu and Nunukan–Tawau. It aims to identify patterns, types, and levels of integration of borrowed lexical items and to analyze structural variation arising from sustained language contact. A mixed-methods design is employed, combining quantitative corpus analysis with qualitative sociolinguistic interpretation. The dataset includes 20–30 hours of naturally occurring spoken interactions, supported by interviews and digital communication data. Participants (n = 40–60) were selected to represent diverse sociolinguistic backgrounds. The findings show that lexical borrowing is pervasive, accounting for approximately 38% of lexical items in domain-specific discourse, particularly in trade and administrative contexts. Borrowings originate mainly from Indonesian, Malaysian Malay, and English, and are realized as loanwords, calques, and hybrid forms, with loanwords being the most dominant. Evidence of morphosyntactic integration is reflected in the use of local affixes attached to borrowed roots. Morphosyntactic variation is observed in affixation, word order, and clause structure, indicating ongoing convergence between Indonesian and Malaysian Malay varieties. Statistical analysis reveals that cross-border mobility is the strongest predictor of linguistic variation, followed by age and occupation. Younger and highly mobile speakers demonstrate greater use of innovative and hybrid forms. The study contributes to contact linguistics by offering empirical insights from a transnational context and highlighting the interaction between lexical and structural change. The findings underscore the role of social and functional factors in shaping language practices in multilingual border communities.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of standard language use in the digital era by exploring public perceptions, attitudes, and linguistic practices across formal, social, and digital contexts. Technological developments and digital culture have increased the use of non-standard language, including slang, abbreviations, and code-mixing, which may affect the stability of standard language as a national identity marker. This research aims to analyze how digital communication shifts influence the sustainability of standard Indonesian and what strategies can be implemented to preserve it. Using a descriptive qualitative method through literature review, digital content analysis, and questionnaires, the findings reveal that most respondents hold positive perceptions of standard language and consider it essential in academic, professional, and formal communication settings. However, standard language use becomes more flexible in digital platforms that encourage informal and expressive communication styles. Despite this shift, there is collective awareness of the need to preserve standard language through education and enhanced language literacy across digital media. The study concludes that although digital culture impacts linguistic behavior, standard Indonesian remains significant and must be maintained through continuous language development efforts and adaptive policy strategies.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the increasing use of slang among university students, which has the potential to affect their ability to use standard Indonesian, particularly students of Indonesian Language and Literature Education at Universitas Negeri Padang, who are expected to serve as models of proper and correct language use. This study aims to analyze the impact of slang usage on students’ proficiency in standard Indonesian in the context of oral communication in academic settings. The research employed a qualitative approach using field observation, and in-depth interviews with students of Indonesian Language and Literature Education. Data were collected through direct observation of students’ language practices in academic environments and through structured interviews to explore the participants’ subjective experiences. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and descriptive conclusion drawing. The results indicate that intensive use of slang has an impact on inappropriate word choices, inaccurate sentence structures, mixing of informal and formal registers, and low adherence to standard spelling rules in academic communication. The study concludes that slang has a significant impact on the decline in the accuracy of students’ use of standard Indonesian, thereby highlighting the need for strengthening language development programs in higher education.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of the Digital Era 5.0 on the formation of character and intelligent mindset among students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program. The background of this research is rooted in the increasing intensity of students’ interaction with digital media and advanced technologies, which potentially shape their ways of thinking, attitudes, values, and academic as well as social behavior. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving students who actively use digital media in their academic and daily lives. The data were analyzed using an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that digital media in the Digital Era 5.0 has a significant influence on students’ character formation and intellectual mindset. This influence is largely determined by students’ levels of digital media literacy and reflective ability. Students with high digital media literacy tend to demonstrate critical thinking skills, selective information processing, and ethical awareness, enabling them to utilize digital media for academic development and character building. Conversely, students with low digital media literacy are more susceptible to negative influences, such as misinformation, superficial thinking patterns, and the decline of academic ethics. Therefore, the Digital Era 5.0 holds considerable potential in shaping an intelligent, critical, and character-driven generation, provided that it is supported by the integration of digital media literacy and character education within higher education learning processes.

Abstract

The folklore of Ken Arok and Ken Dedes is one of the most well-known legends from East Java, which has been adapted into various other literary forms. One such adaptation is the drama script The Light of Ken Dedes by M. Ahmad Jalidu, which features a more modern narration. This modernization highlights significant differences, particularly regarding the role of Ken Dedes in the two works. While Ken Dedes plays a more passive role (object) in the original folklore, she takes a more active role (subject) in the drama script, especially concerning the events and incidents that befall her. Therefore, the objective of this research is to compare the role of Ken Dedes in the folklore and the drama script to identify similarities and shifts in her characterization. The use of comparative literature and a feminist literary criticism approach was selected as it aligns with the focus on the shifting role of Ken Dedes in facing the patriarchal culture she experiences as the female protagonist in both works. The research methodology employed is descriptive qualitative, as the objects of study are texts, the analysis of which will be described in detail. This study reveals similarities and differences in Ken Dedes’s agency toward the events she faces, such as Ken Dedes as the arbiter of her own marriage, Ken Dedes as an object of power legitimacy, and Ken Dedes as an existential subject.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of Artificial Intelligence-assisted academic writing learning on the quality of argumentation and metacognitive awareness of students in the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program at Makassar State University. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest control group design. The subjects consisted of two classes, each with 37 students. The experimental class received AI-assisted academic writing learning, while the control class received conventional writing learning. Research data were obtained through an academic writing test to measure argumentation quality and a metacognitive awareness questionnaire to determine students' level of cognitive reflection during the writing process. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis through t-tests to determine significant differences between the two groups. The results showed that AI-assisted academic writing learning had a significant impact on improving the quality of students' argumentation. In addition, the use of AI also increased students' metacognitive awareness in planning, monitoring, and evaluating their writing process. These findings indicate that the integration of AI in writing learning not only improves the quality of academic writing products but also strengthens students' reflective thinking processes. Thus, the use of AI can be an innovative strategy in academic writing learning in higher education.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the forms of directive illocutionary discourse acts in the podcast Warung Kopi bersama Davina Karamoy, which airs on the HAS Creative channel. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, with data consisting of utterances containing directive elements, sourced from podcast videos uploaded in May 2025. Data collection was conducted using the Simak Bebas Libat Cakap (SBLC) method. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, consisting of three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate the presence of various forms of directive illocutionary discourse acts, such as questions, commands, prohibitions, and advice, which are used to direct, request, and influence the actions of the interlocutor. Among these forms, questions and commands are the most dominant, consistent with the interactive and spontaneous nature of podcasts. Thus, this study confirms that directive illocutionary acts play a significant role in establishing communicative interaction, particularly in the context of digital media.

Abstract

Literary works are a form of creative expression of authors that contain various life values, such as religious, social, cultural, and moral values, which contribute to character formation and can be used as a learning tool. Literature has a close relationship with people's lives because it is able to reflect social reality and life dynamics through the experiences of characters and the conflicts presented. This study aims to reveal the representation of social values in the short story "Orang-Orang Aneh dari Selatan" by Ni Komang Ariani using a sociological literary approach. This study focuses on five main aspects, namely socio-religious, educational, economic, political, and the function of social values in people's lives. The method used is a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type. The main data were obtained from the short story text, while supporting data came from literary theory books, scientific articles, journals, and relevant previous research. Data collection techniques were carried out through in-depth reading, recording, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of reduction, presentation, drawing conclusions and verification. The results of the study indicate the existence of five categories of social values, including socio-religious aspects (three data), education (five data), economic (six data), political (two data), and the function of social values in society (eleven data). Thus, this short story represents various social values that reflect the reality of life and has the potential to be a medium for character and social learning..
