Abstract

Owing to the restrictions on the time of face-to-face lessons, a new teaching method has been created under the new normal. The teachers must be so innovative in choosing appropriate media as well as maintaining students’ mood in learning. This literature study aims at showing another choice of media that teachers may have in teaching English reading during the pandemic era. A comic with local content based emerge as a fun medium for teaching and learning reading English during the pandemic era. The visuals help improve students comprehension on the text as they provide “additional contextual information” which is in line with DCT (Dual Code Theory). Moreover, the use of local content based stories contributed to the high effect of cultural schema on comprehension.

Abstract

This paper describes the results of need analysis of the eighth-grade students of Islamic Schools in Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung province, pointed on the development of English E-Module (electronic module) integrated to Islamic value which aims to acknowledge the needs of English E-Module integrated with Islamic value development for junior high schools students. The data were collected using a questionnaire with four aspects: 1) Interest in Learning English integrated in Islamic value, 2) Media to support students’ learning, 3) Pedagogy, textbooks, and learning media, 4) Media-based independent learning. This study was conducted on the 44 students of Islamic junior high schools in Kota Pangkalpinang. Based on the analysis, it reveals that 1) 64.40% of students are interested in learning English, 2) 59.09% of students need media to support their learning, 3) 81.82% of students need pedagogy, textbooks, and learning media, 4) 55.30% students need media-based independent learning. These findings must offer as a framework for the development of the English E-Module integrated to Islamic value for the Eighth-grade students of Islamic schools in Kota Pangkalpinang.

Abstract

This study deals with the melodic formula and contours of expressed Andung during mourning ceremony in Toba Batak (based on the Malm theory). The objectives were to to find out the types melodic form and type of contours used in Andung. This research used descriptive qualitative design because it is only focused on the culture context of Andung, and also the data was also in the form of utterances. There are five types of melodic form ; repetitive, interative, reverting, stropic, progressive and five types of contours applied in Andung, they are ascending, descending, pendulous, terraced, static. It is found that stropic and progressive are the most dominantly applied, besides ascending and descending are the most dominantly practiced in Andung because the lamenters had relationship with the individual experience in terms.

Abstract

This research aimed at identifying the effectivity of applying Moodle virtual class on cadets’ learning motivation and cadets’ motivation in speaking ability in the pandemic of Covid-19. Moodle is one of open source of e-learning software used in lecturing process. The research sample was Studi Nautika Cadets of Sekolah Tinggi Maritim Yogyakarta who were taking Maritime English II class. This research is a descriptive quantitative research. It employed online questionnaire as data collecting method. This study resulted that Moodle usage achievement effectivity on cadets’ learning motivation in Maritime English II subject gained 80.83% agreement. Furthermore, it the effectivity of using Moodle in Maritime English II resulted in 90.63% in Cadets’ motivation in speaking.

Abstract

Students must master the capacity to read comprehension because it is closely tied to their whole learning process and their ability to develop a broad perspective. Classroom Action Research was used in this study. The VAKT (Visual, Auditory, Kinaesthetic, and Tactile) method is used to increase students' reading comprehension skills. A diagnostic test to cycle I and cycle II (68.69 73.74 81.66) revealed that while students' average reading comprehension score was 68.69, after cycle I evaluation, their reading comprehension increased to 73.74, resulting in an increase in students' reading comprehension ability from the Diagnostic Test to cycle II of 81.66. and the results of previous research indicate that incorporating the VAKT learning approach (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, and tactile) into the classroom can raise students' interest and motivation to improve their reading comprehension, as evidenced by the results display.

Abstract

The most prominent thing to be paid attention in reading comprehension is the reading activity as well, how to stimulate and attract the students’ attention to read. The aim of this research is to investigate and describe the students’ attractiveness on the use of webtoon application in reading activity. This study was a descriptive model consisting of 35 students. It was conducted at Bulukumba Muhammadiyah University, South-Sulawesi. The data were collected with a questionnaire, it was rating scale which distributed after several meetings of treatments, and it covered 10 positive and closed statements about the use of webtoon application in reading activity and the students were asked to respond whether they are: (1) strongly agree (2) Agree (3) Undecided (4) Disagree (5) Strongly Disagree with the statements. The questionnaire was analyzed based on the percentage of each answer or response. To calculate questionnaire data into percentage, the researcher used the formula where the number of frequency is multiplied to 100% then divided to the number of the total respondents. The result of the students’ response indicated that webtoon application is interesting media used in reading activity because containing and covering electronic comics, online comics, digital comics, etc. The highest rank of the mean score is 51% of strongly agree students, 46% of agree students, 2% of undecided students, 1% of disagree students, and none of student strongly disagree to the statements on the questionnaire.

Abstract

21st Century learning is learning that integrates literacy skills, knowledge skills, skills and attitudes, as well as mastery of technology. Therefore, in the 21st century, mastery of technology and learning are closely related. Technology can also be connected to language learning. With the development of the internet and technology, many companies have created free and paid applications and software to support the learning process.One of the applications that can be used in learning English is Powtoon. PowToon is a tool whose operation is similar to Power Point, Impress, or even Prezi. It uses slides to which text and images can be added to, but it also allows animation and the incorporation of sound or music, available in the same application or through an external source. This reasearch used a qualitative case study and used preeliminary data, structured interviews, and Questionnaire. The findings of the research showed students’ perceptions on the use of Powtoon in EFL classroom were: 1) Students’ Perceptions on Powtoon Helps Students in increasing English Achievements, Powtoon could be a solution to enhance EFL students' English skills to have good communication skill in the learning process. Powtoon has many beneficial features such text, music, animation, characters, and audio-visual for EFL students in enhancing their English skills, such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing,2)Students’ Perceptions on Powtoon as an Fascinating Application, Powtoon as an interesting application because there are a lot of animation, sound, and images. 3) Students’ Perceptions on Powtoon Increasing Students’ Interactive and Motivation, this application shows that learning descriptive text through the animation video from PowToon software make the learning process more interesting, and it can help students’ understanding to the material

Abstract

This research is based on the results of Google Classroom implementation to both students and teachers at several high schools in Bandung in carrying out the English Proficiency Test. The test takers have regularly recognized and used Google Classroom as secondary application in online learning during the pandemic Covid-19. The research uses a qualitative and descriptive method. The objectives for the research are to describe the effectiveness of Google Classroom in conducting English Proficiency Test, to identify the materials feasibility when attached in Google Classroom, to obtain responses of test takers after conducting English Proficiency Test by Google Classroom. The research technique used is purposive sampling technique and virtual class observation, where the determination of participants research based on certain considerations. The results of this study indicate that the implementation of Google Classroom in English Proficiency Certification test during the current pandemic is relatively effective. Furthermore, the feasibility of materials posted or attached in the application help test takers to enhance their ability; and the responds taken from the test takers are positive. In other hand, based on the questionnaire shared to the test takers after the test, it shows positive sentiment regarding to the test organization, since it runs properly on their device.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the effectiveness of grammatical practice activities in the CLT method in increasing the grammar capability of the second semester students at University of Muhamamdiyah Bulukumba. Based on the research objective, the researcher would like to find out how the CLT method is being used effectively and efficiently in the EFL class through grammar practice activities. The design of the research is a classroom action research (CAR). The researcher acts and follows four steps: Planning, Implementing of the action, observation and evaluation. The study's participants were second-semester English Education students at the University of Muhammadiyah Bulukumba. There were two classes, 20A and 20B, each with 21 students and 30 students, for a total of 51 students. The research sample was drawn from class 20A, which consisted of 21 students, using a random sampling technique. In the collection of the data, the researcher used certain types of instruments; 1) pre-test and post-test testing, questionnaire, 3) Grammar Practice Activities materials. The researcher concluded that the Grammar Practice Activities, as one of the applications of the CLT method, were effective in increasing the grammar ability of the second semester students at the University Muhammadiyah of The data collected before and after the treatment in every circle has verified this. The Grammar Practice Activities was proven to increase the students’ interest and involve the students as a center in teaching learning process toward English grammar

Abstract

The objectives in this study are to find out: 1) The image method has an effect on learning English for students in Muhammadiyah Junior High Schools. 2) Speaking ability in learning English in the eyes of Muhammadiyah Senior High School Students 25. 3) How much influence does the drawing method have on speaking skills in learning English in the eyes of Muhammadiyah Senior High School Students 25. This study was designed using a descriptive method with a quantitative approach. The population in this study were 22 Muhammadiyah Junior High School Students, totaling 120 of the 4 classes taken from Class XI. The sample size using the Slovin technique. In the research I did, I used 54 respondents, namely 25 Muhammadiyah high school students. The results of this study are as follows: 1) The picture method for learning English for students at Muhammadiyah Senior High School 25. If you look at the questionnaire for the Picture Method (X) variable, it can be seen from the highest respondent's answer to the answer "Disagree" which is as much as 20.06% so it can be concluded that the Picture Method in Muhammadiyah 25 Senior High School is not good. 2) The speaking ability of students' English learning at Muhammadiyah Senior High School 25. If you look at the questionnaire, the Speaking Ability (Y) variable can be seen from the highest respondent's answer to the answer "Disagree" which is as much as 24.07% so it can be concluded that the Speaking Ability in School Muhammadiyah 25 is not good. 3) There is an effect of the picture method on speaking ability in learning English in students at Muhammadiyah 25 Senior High School, it is proven that the tcount value for Picture Method (X) is 11.850, while the ttable value for N = 54 is 1.673. So tcount > ttable or 11.850 > 1.673, because H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted, it can be stated that Picture Method (X) has a significant effect on Speaking Ability (Y) at Muhammadiyah 25 Senior High School. Meanwhile, it is proven that the R Square value is 0.730. This shows that 73% of Picture Method (X) affects Speaking Ability (Y), and while the difference of 27% is influenced by other variables not examined in this research study.
