Abstract

The focus of this article is to discuss the reality of interfaith marriages that occur among the Tengger-Tosari community in Pasuruan, in addition to the pattern of legal smuggling they do to obtain legal recognition of interfaith marriages. This is an interesting topic to study in order to complement general studies on interfaith marriage that tend to focus only on formal legal issues. Therefore, this research uses a socio-legal research model, which is a combination of doctrinal legal research methods and empirical legal research. Through this method, it is concluded that legal avoidance through submission to one of the prospective partner's religions is the main avoidance model among the Tengger Tosari community. However, this conversion is not permanent, because data from interviews with informants show that after the marriage takes place, they tend to return to their original religion. so the disposition of this research illustrates interesting field facts. in the future, researchers can enrich similar research by describing quantitative data that can be approached with mixed method research to find the exact number and perceptions of the perpetrators of interfaith marriages.

Al-Alaq verses 1-5, Qs. Al-Mujadalah verse 11, Qs. Luqman verse 13, Qs. Al-Ahzab verse 21, and Qs. An-Nahl verse 125. However, in this case, caution is needed to maintain the integrity of the meaning contained in the text itself, especially the text of the Qur'an. With this research, the author certainly hopes it will be a valuable contribution as an interpretation methodology that is appropriate to the challenges of the future.

Abstract

The value of ihsan is a concept of spiritual ethics in Islam that reflects the peak of religious perfection. This study aims to examine the concept of ihsan in Tafsir al-Munīr by Wahbah az-Zuhaili and analyze its implications in the contemporary world of work. This research uses a qualitative approach with the method of library research and thematic analysis (mauḍū'ī) of six main verses containing the word ihsan in the Qur'an. The results of the study show that ihsan in Tafsir al-Munīr not only covers the dimension of individual worship, but also social and professional values, such as sincerity, responsibility, communication ethics, social contribution, and the balance between worldly life and the hereafter. In the context of work, ihsan encourages the formation of an Islamic work ethic that is professional, productive, and worthy of worship. This concept is relevant as a solution to the moral crisis in the modern world of work that tends to be materialistic. This research enriches the treasures of thematic interpretation and offers an integration of Islamic spiritual values in professional practice.

Abstract

In recent years, the development of the times, technological advancements, and the rapid flow of information have made social media increasingly popular with various phenomena and trends that have grown into people's habits in the digital era. As long as the trend does not contradict the teachings of the Qur'an, it can be considered reasonable. However, problems arise when the growing trend is not in line with the values of the Qur'an and Hadith. One example is the flexing trend that is rampant by a number of circles, such as celebrities, artists, celebrities, and officials. The focus of this research lies in how flexing is understood in a social context, how to analyze the impact of the flexing phenomenon on social media, as well as examining how Islam views the practice. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive method with a library research approach. The phenomenon of flexing is clearly contrary to the moral teachings brought by the Prophet Muhammad (saw) as stated in the Qur'an and hadith. This behavior is prohibited because it contains various despicable elements that receive a strong threat from Allah SWT. Through the solutions that have been offered in Islam, namely zuhud and tawāḍu' behavior, it is hoped that it can be the main provision in facing the rapid trend and lifestyle that is rampant in the digital era

Abstract

Radicalism and fundamentalism in contemporary Islam have become pressing global issues that significantly affect social, political, and cultural dynamics. This study adopts a qualitative approach through library research to analyze the relationship between radicalism, fundamentalism, and contemporary Islamic theology as an alternative framework. The findings indicate that radicalism is often rooted in literal and partial religious interpretations, socio-political dissatisfaction, and cultural resistance to modernization. Fundamentalism, meanwhile, provides the ideological foundation for exclusivism and intolerance, which in turn can escalate into radical practices. In response, contemporary Islamic theology emphasizes rational, critical, and contextual approaches that prioritize dialogue, pluralism, inclusivity, and humanism. By reconstructing religious thought, reinterpreting sacred texts, and applying these perspectives in education and social institutions, contemporary theology serves as a strategic instrument to counter radical ideologies. This article argues that revitalizing contemporary Islamic theology is essential to fostering moderate, tolerant, and humanistic religious practices that remain relevant to modern challenges while upholding universal values of peace and justice.

Abstract

The Islamization of local traditions in Barus, Central Tapanuli, is a significant event in the history of Islam's spread in the Indonesian archipelago. As a trading hub since the 7th century AD, Barus became a gateway for Muslim merchants and scholars from the Middle East, Persia, and Gujarat. This study aims to explain the process of Islamization through cultural adaptation and peaceful da'wah, emphasizing the purification of faith while preserving local traditions that align with the principles of tawhid (monotheism). The research employs a qualitative method with a historical and descriptive-analytical approach, examining historical sources, ancient manuscripts, and interviews with historians and religious leaders. The findings reveal that Islamization in Barus occurred peacefully and persuasively, transforming local traditions such as customary rituals, leadership systems, and social norms into Islamic values. This process not only strengthened the community's belief in tawhid but also led to the establishment of Islamic institutions and the emergence of scholars who played crucial roles in the development of Islam in the region.

Abstract

Sleep is a natural human phenomenon that plays an important role in maintaining physical and psychological balance. The Qur'an discusses sleep in several verses (including QS. Al-An'am: 60, Az-Zumar: 42, Al-Furqan: 47, and Ar-Rum: 23), describing it as a divine system (sunnatullah) and a manifestation of Allah's mercy, not merely a biological need. This study aims to examine the essence of sleep from the perspective of the Qur'an based on M. Quraish Shihab's Tafsir Al-Mishbah and analyze its relevance to contemporary health psychology. The research uses a qualitative method with a thematic (maudhu‘i) approach, through the collection of Qur’anic verses related to sleep, analysis of their semantic structure and context, and their relationship with psychological theories about rest, stress regulation, and emotional recovery. The results show that Tafsir Al-Mishbah interprets sleep as a sign of Allah's power and human dependence, representing a temporary withdrawal of consciousness or “little death” (al-mawt al-sughra). Sleep also functions as a means of spiritual renewal that brings tranquility (sukūn) and psychological recovery. These findings are consistent with the views of health psychology and neuroscience regarding the restorative role of sleep. This study confirms the Qur'an's view of physical and spiritual harmony and offers an interdisciplinary framework that connects Qur'anic interpretation with modern mental health discourse.

Abstract

This article studies Al-Ghazali’s system of knowledge classification and its relevance to Qur’anic exegesis within the framework of classical Islamic epistemology. The focus of this study is to explain the structure of Al-Ghazali’s epistemology, which includes the sources of knowledge, methods of acquisition, and legal-ethical rulings on seeking knowledge, while positioning tafsir as an integral part of this framework. This research employs a qualitative approach through library research, focusing on Al-Ghazali’s major works, such as Iḥyā’ ‘Ulūm al-Dīn and al-Risālah al-Ladunniyyah. The findings indicate that: (1) Al-Ghazali classifies knowledge based on its sources into revelatory knowledge (‘ilm al-shar‘i), rational knowledge (‘ilm al-‘aql), and intuitive knowledge (‘ilm al-kashf); (2) based on its method of acquisition, knowledge is divided into ḥuḍūrī (immediate) and ḥuṣūlī (acquired through learning), incorporating approaches such as bayānī, burhānī, ‘irfānī, and tajribī; (3) in terms of legal rulings, knowledge is categorized as farḍ ‘ayn, farḍ kifāyah, mandūb, mubāḥ, or ḥarām; and (4) Qur’anic exegesis is positioned as a shar‘i science, falling under the category of farḍ kifāyah, specifically within the subcategory of al-mutammimāt, developed through ḥuṣūlī methods and integrating several epistemological approaches.

Abstract

This study emerges from the observation that many pesantren remain predominantly focused on student care, limiting their broader social impact; this research reactivates the social role of pesantren by situating it within the normative framework of KH Sahal Mahfudh’s social fiqh. A qualitative literature-based approach was employed, drawing primarily on KH Sahal’s works and peer-reviewed journal articles, analyzed sequentially through open, axial, and selective coding, with library triangulation applied to ensure validity. Findings indicate that KH Sahal’s social fiqh prioritizes maqāṣid and basic needs fulfillment as practical instruments of ijtihād, enabling pesantren to develop integrated curricula, productive enterprises such as cooperatives and canteens, primary health services, vocational training, and environmental conservation programs. Implications call for institutional reform, enhanced methodological capacity among administrators, transparent waqf management, and supportive local policies to facilitate stakeholder partnerships. The study recommends comparative field testing of the proposed reactivation model. Systematic implementation is expected to improve social inclusion, reduce local economic disparities, and strengthen community resilience through women’s and youth participation alongside sustained monitoring and evaluation and institutional learning frameworks also.
