Abstract

Indonesia is one of the largest coconut producer countries providing a higher opportunity for producing various products derived from coconut fruit including virgin coconut oil (VCO). The enzymatic method can be chosen as part of VCO production as it offers higher yields. This work then utilized the bromelain enzyme which could hydrolyze protein leading to better oil-water separation in the coconut milk emulsion. Around 200 ml of coconut milk and several variables such as incubation time (24 hours, 36 hours, 48 ??hours, 60 hours), and the concentration of pineapple hump extract (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) were chosen as investigated parameters in this work. The experimental procedure for VCO production followed Indonesia national standard (SNI 7381: 2008). It was found that the incubation time of 24 hr and the concentration of pineapple hump extract 5% as the optimum condition. These parameters resulted in VCO product having specific gravity 0.9150 gr/cm3, free fatty acids 0.133%, and the acid number 1.8 meq/kg which has met Indonesia quality standard for VCO production.

Abstract

The Management Information System (MIS) in Higher Vocational Education such as Polytechnics functions to coordinate and monitor the planning, implementation, and evaluation of education activities, especially at the study program level. The current MIS serves BAAK’s data and information needs, reporting for internal management and providing PD-DIKTI Database. MIS has not fully served the needs of internal customers. The aim of this research is to describe in depth the process of planning and evaluating MIS at the study program level. This research is limited to MIS academic services and support preparation for study program’s accreditation of BAN-PT. The theoretical study is supported by theological foundation of Al Qur’an and Hadits, the philosophical constructivism and the theory of Total Quality of Management (TQM). This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach, explore deeply into the data and information needs for students, lecturers, study program, and BAAK. The informant involved internal Polban namely BAAK’s person, head of department and study program, lecturers and students, reviewing statute documents, strategic plans, academic regulation, laws and government’s regulations related to polytechnic’s management. This research reveals that the current MIS program is not based on customer’s needs yet by paying attention to business processes in planning, implementing, and evaluating teaching and learning process. MIS in implemented stage solely for BAAK needs, does not yet serve data needs for study programs, lecturers and students, including not yet supports the preparations of program study’s accreditation by BAN-PT. Customers are still difficult to get the information needed. The results of the evaluation show that there is a gap between data and information due to several inhibiting factors and a management system that is not yet based on complete data. The novelty of this research is MIS which is integrated with the current management system. MIS is designed comprehensively, not partially on project based. The conclusion is that the MIS program must be designed in the form of grand design that maps all data and information needs for internal and external customers which is customers oriented. MIS implantation will be successful if it is supported by socialization for customers, integrating existing MISs including databases and online communication networks, adequacy of MIS infrastructure include hardware, bandwidth capacity and high speed accessibility of information.

Abstract

Acne is a skin disease that affects a large number of sufferers. Acne occurs due to active oil glands under the skin. This activity is stimulated by androgen hormones. The active compound content of proanthocyanidin is the main compound in the ethanolic extract of tamarind seed bark, which can inhibit the growth of acne-causing bacteria, namely Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The purpose of this study was to formulate a nanogel from tamarind seed bark extract and test the antibacterial potential of an ethanol extract of tamarind seeds against acne-causing bacteria. The antibacterial potency test consisted of variations in concentration and was 0.5, 1, 5, 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, and 300 (in mg/mL). The concentration of the formulated nanogel preparations was 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5%. The MIC results showed that the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was at a concentration of 1 mg/mL with a zone of inhibition of 6.50 ± 0.44 mm (Propionibacterium acnes) and 6.40 ± 0.10 mm (Staphylococcus epidermidis). The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was at a concentration of 25 mg/mL with a percentage reduction of 98.18% (Propionibacterium acnes) and 98.06% (Staphylococcus epidermidis). The results of the nanogel formulations showed that the particle sizes were 49.88 ± 0.11 nm (Formula I), 51.92 ± 0.09 nm (Formula II), and 59.13 ± 0.10 nm (Formula III). Conclusion The ethanolic extract of tamarind seed bark has effectiveness in inhibiting the growth of acne-causing bacteria and can be formulated as an anti-acne nanogel.
