Abstract

This study aims to describe student errors and analyze the factors causing student errors in solving quadratic equation problems. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects used in this study were class IX A consisting of 16 students, then 3 students were selected based on their high, medium, and low category abilities obtained after being given test questions. The instrument used was a test instrument in the form of two questions that met the Polya theory indicators. The results of this study indicate that there are four errors in solving quadratic equation problems: (1) errors in understanding the problem, namely not being able to write down information related to the problem that is known in the problem; (2) errors in making plans, namely not being able to change the problem sentence into a mathematical model and errors in choosing the steps for solving, (3) errors in implementing the plan, namely errors in writing the final answer, (4) not mastering the concept of arithmetic operations and rechecking the answers. Factors causing student errors in understanding are students' lack of understanding of the concept, difficulty in mathematical modeling, and students' lack of thoroughness in arithmetic skills.

Abstract

This study was motivated by Indonesia's low ranking in PISA results from 2000 to 2022. This shows that many students still experience errors in solving PISA questions. This study aims to describe the percentage of students' errors, the types of students' errors and the factors that cause students' errors in class VIII SMPN 40 Makassar in solving PISA questions on the content of change and relationship. This research method uses descriptive research with a quantitative approach. Data collection techniques were carried out using tests, structured interviews, and documentation. The sample in this study were students of grade VIII of SMPN 40 Makassar, totaling 189 students. The results showed that the percentage of errors made by students in solving PISA questions on the content of change and relationship were: (1) errors in understanding the problem of 69.68% in the “very high” category, (2) planning errors of 65.93% in the “very high” category, (3) completion errors of 71.27% in the “very high” category, and (4) rechecking errors of 85.93% in the “very high” category. The factors of students experiencing errors in understanding the problem are because they interpret it incorrectly, are confused about what to write and are not accustomed to writing known and questionable things in answering problems. The planning error factor is due to not understanding the concept so that it is wrong in choosing the formula and not being able to know the steps in solving the problem. The error factor in solving is due to not mastering mathematical operations so that it is wrong in process skills when doing calculations. The error factor in checking back is due to previous mistakes and the absence of re-evaluation.

Abstract

Difficulties in learning three-dimensional geometry often arise because students have difficulty imagining the shape of a geometric figure in real terms, while teachers face challenges in explaining the abstract concept. The low understanding of students towards this material is caused by the abstract nature of three-dimensional geometry and the ineffective use of learning media. Teachers tend to use simple media, such as whiteboards and simple sketches, without innovation to visualize concepts more concretely, such as distance or angles in geometric figures. Along with the development of technology, Android-based augmented reality has become a potential solution for visualizing three-dimensional objects interactively. This study aims to develop and test the effectiveness of augmented reality (AR)-based learning media on three-dimensional geometry material for grade XII students at SMA Negeri 15 Makassar. AR was developed using Unity and Vuforia, and integrated into the 2013 curriculum with the Plomp method as a development model. Testing was carried out to measure the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of this learning media. The results of the study showed that AR media is valid for learning, proven to be practical in classroom implementation, and effective in improving students' understanding of three-dimensional material. This AR media received positive responses from students and teachers, achieving a classical completion percentage of 85.19% on the student comprehension ability test, and meeting the effectiveness criteria based on student activities and responses during learning. The main obstacles involved student adaptation to AR technology and access to Android-based devices. This study concluded that AR media can be an innovative and effective solution in overcoming the difficulties of grade XII students at SMA Negeri 15 Makassar in understanding abstract concepts in three-dimensional geometry material.
