Abstract

Abstract. In a number of English classes I have taught, a common phenomenon I found is that most students were silent during the class. Even when they are instructured to talk, they are often hestitant to start. A potential factor leading to the phenomena is the existence of speaking anxiety. The aim of this research is to unfold external factors promoting speaking anxiety among EFL Learners in an Indonesian university. I employed a qualitative case study and purposively invited thirty EFL students who I found hesitant to talk in my class although they got a good score in the speaking test. Data to answer the research question were gathered through reflective journal, focus group discussion, and interviews. Data were coded and grouped before I withdrew a conclusion. I concluded that there are five external conditions which are believed promoting the students speaking anxiety consisting of the politeness norm of students’ cultural background, the inability to speak English with someone sharing similar first language, the Indonesian students’ cultural belief that teacher is the person who knows everything about the subject, the students’ need to maintain their positive face and feeling afraid for decreasing or losing the speaking partner’s positive face through inappropriate joke.  Keywords : EFL, Speaking, anxiety, external factors

Abstract

Abstract. This research aims to acquire data and information regarding the reading and writing competencies of college students in the German language, using Google Classroom as a teaching medium. The design employed in this study is a mixed methods approach. The research was conducted within the German Language Education Program, Department of Foreign Languages, Faculty of Language and Literature, Universitas Negeri Makassar, involving 30 fourth-semester students as the research sample. Qualitative data were obtained through participatory observation by the researcher, who observed the activities of German language learning using Google Classroom. Meanwhile, quantitative data were obtained from the average reading and writing competence test scores in the German language and t-test results. The results of participatory observation indicate that Google Classroom serves as a platform and learning space and indirectly as a tool for students to download and access course materials and complete quizzes, thereby enhancing language competency. Indirectly, this platform has become a supportive companion for students learning the German language. The quantitative data analysis revealed that students' average reading competency score is 88.8, while the writing competency score is 85.2. The t-test results also indicate that the calculated t-value for reading competency (10.975) and writing competency (8.292) is greater than the tabulated t-table (1.714). This disparity suggests that Google Classroom effectively assesses the exploration of reading and writing competencies in the German language among students. Keywords: Teaching German, Reading Competence, Writing Competence, Google Classroom

Abstract

Abstract. This research aims to analyze difficulties encountered by students of the English Education study program at Tadulako University in reading comprehension of literary works. A qualitative approach with a descriptive research design applied in this research. The samples were 98 students chosen randomly. Data were collected from existing documents, that is the results of pretest administered in the Reading for Literary Appreciation class. Results of data analysis showed that the students’ reading comprehension of the three genres of literary works – prose, poetry, and drama is low with percentage intervals of comprehension 18-37%. Eight difficulties encountered by the students in reading comprehension of literary works. They were vocabulary mastery, making inferences, recognizing the author’s opinion/bias, summarizing and paraphrasing, identifying figurative language, analyzing poetic or sound devices, evaluating author’s style, and analyzing the story elements. The findings provide information on students’ difficulties in reading comprehension of a variety of literary texts (prose, poetry and drama), which previous research have not yet investigated it. Therefore, teachers can design and apply strategies to help students improve their reading comprehension. Future researchers, furthermore, can find these findings resourceful to support their studies.   Keywords: Reading Comprehension, Literary Works, Reading for Literary Appreciation
