Abstract

Abstract. The objective of this study is to determine the justifications for employing online and offline learning models in the covid-19 pandemic, as well as the barriers to their use. This study was carried out at SMP Negeri 2 Kota Sorong. This study employs a descriptive qualitative methodology. The data for the study were gathered via interviews. Principal, English teachers, and students of SMP Negeri 2 Kota Sorong were questioned during the interviews.  According to this study's findings, there were two learning models used during the covivirus-19 epidemic. Both online and traditional forms of education are included into the instructional format of this strategy. Because the students' financial resources are inadequate to support online learning, a school first used offline learning at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. This is one of the reasons why the school employs both methods of education. In addition to the challenges students experience throughout the learning process, there are a further four obstacles. The conclusion findings indicated that the two learning models were though somewhat successful. Furthermore, the principal developed a new learning model for post-pandemic Covid-19 recovery. Keywords: Teaching, Learning Model, Obstacles.

Abstract

Abstract. Ecolinguistics may be one of the newest branches of linguistics. However, it has an important role in the educational field. Through ecolinguistics, students can possess both linguistics and ecological knowledge at the same time. Moreover, the case of environmental issues was getting higher day by day, Thus, it is important to put ecolinguistics representation through the contents of textbooks.  This qualitative research aimed to investigate the portrayal of ecolinguistics aspects in several Indonesian English textbooks. The purpose of this study is to analyze, whether Indonesian English textbooks use ecolinguistic aspects in their topics, words, or sentences or not. Five Indonesian English textbooks published by the Indonesian government were used as data sources. To gather the data, a corpus application, AntCont, was used. The descriptive qualitative approach and corpus approach were used in this study to analyze the contents of the English textbooks. The findings of the study indicated that not all Indonesian English textbooks represented ecolinguistics aspects in their topics, words, and sentences. Only three English textbooks from the total of five English textbooks portrayed ecolinguistic aspects in their contents. It is expected that the study results would improve the global understanding related to the environment and ecolinguistic topics, particularly through English textbooks for students. Keywords: Ecolinguistic topic, ecology, English textbook, EFL, ELT

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to reveal the implementation of authentic assessment in Sanggar Anak Alam Yogyakarta, including the obstacles encountered by the facilitator and its solution. This is a qualitative study with a case study as the research design to achieve those goals. The data is gathered from focus group interviews and classroom observation. Three facilitators participated in the focus group discussion, and two classes were observed. The finding reveals that the facilitators assess their pupils authentically. It means that the facilitators assess not only the pupils' cognitive development but also their affective and psychomotor development. It can be seen from the pupils’ report cards, which are in the form of a detailed narrative about the result of the pupils’ learning process. However, in implementing the authentic assessment, the facilitators encounter some obstacles. Those obstacles are time constraints and the ability to analyze the data. Nevertheless, the facilitators can overcome these difficulties by managing their time better and getting used to analyzing pupils’ data. It can be concluded that the facilitators in Sanggar Anak Alam have implemented authentic assessments to asses their pupils. Keywords: Authentic Assessment, Facilitator, Implementation

Abstract

Abstract. This research aims to explore the phenomena of code-crossing in the teaching of English as a foreign language. It cannot be denied that in the classroom interaction, there are many aspects influencing the success of the communication between the lecturers/teachers and the students. One of the interesting aspects is the influence of social status differences which lead to the occurrence of code-crossing in the class. For that purpose, the study in this paper is directed to explore the perspectives on the use of code-crossing in the class, focusing on the online classroom interactions via Zoom Cloud Meetings. This research applied a qualitative research design taking one English class and their students at Universitas Negeri Makassar as the subject. The data of this paper were collected by employing a semi-structured interview by focusing on the students taken purposively among 40 students of the English class. The interview was also conducted through the online communication (WhatsApp chats). The data were analyzed descriptively by using qualitative model analysis (Miles, et al 2014). The result of the research shows that from the student’s point of view, most students did code-crossing in the online classes because they wanted to respect and speak formally to the older people (lecturers and seniors). In addition, for some students interviewed by the researchers, they thought that the use of code-crossing could show politeness. Findings from this study are worthy of reading for English language teaching practitioners in their effort to create effective classroom interaction both in the face-to-face interaction and online interaction. Keywords: Code-Crossing; Language And Power; Social Status; Students’ Perception; Online Classes

Abstract

Abstract. Topeng Sidakarya dance was one of the classics that originated in the 16th century that related to the story of the arrival of Brahmana Keling in Bali. The dance had many lexicons in the Balinese language. This study aims at investigating the lexicons in the Topeng Sidakarya dance and their cultural meanings. This study was conducted as descriptive qualitative research using an ethnolinguistic approach. The method of data collection are observation and interviews. The research instruments include the researcher as the main instrument, an observation sheet, an interview guide, and a phone recorder. The result of this study shows that sixteen (19) lexicons were related to movements (three in head movements, ten in body movements, and three in leg movements). The cultural meanings of the lexicons are related to the Balinese Hindu leadership concepts, namely Panca Upaya Sandhi, Nawanatya, Tri Upaya Sandhi, Sad Warnaning Raja Niti, Panca Dasa Pramiteng Prabhu. In addition, the dance movements also illustrate the Tri Hita Karana concept (harmony with God, people, and nature). This study is beneficial for language teaching and dance teachers, where the result of the lexicons found can be used to teach the Balinese language and dance; therefore, it can maintain the existence of Balinese language and culture from extinction. Keywords: Topeng Sidakarya, lexicons, cultural meaning, ethnolinguistic
