Abstract

This study focuses on the development of a POGIL-based experiment manual for general chemistry courses to enhance students' science process skills. The research and development (R&D) method, utilizing the Plomp model, was employed to create a valid and practical manual. Data were collected through a validity and practicality questionnaire, which was then analyzed using the Kappa Cohen's method. The manual's content was found to be highly valid, with an average score of 0.82, while its graphics had an average score of 0.84, also falling within the high category. Practicality was assessed through small group student testing, revealing high practicality scores in terms of user convenience, attractiveness, and benefits, with an average score of 0.77. Overall, the results indicate that the POGIL-based general chemistry experiment manual developed in this study is both valid and practical.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop an Android-based virtual laboratory media for chemistry, assess its validity, and determine students' responses to it. The research methodology employed was research and development (R&D) with the 4D development model (Four D Models) according to Thiagarajan, which comprises four stages: define, design, develop, and disseminate. The study was carried out until the development stage. The research instruments used included interview guides, validation sheets, and questionnaires. The media products developed were validated by material and media expert validators consisting of two chemistry lecturers and one chemistry teacher. Limited trials were conducted with a total of 32 11th grade students from Mathematics and Science (MIPA) 3 class at State Islamic Senior High School (MAN) Blitar City. Data analysis techniques involved both qualitative and quantitative methods. The results indicate that the validation scores from the material and media experts were very valid, with an average percentage score of 98% and 95%, respectively. The student's responses to the limited trials were also very good, with an average percentage score of 88%. Overall, the study demonstrated the potential of the developed Android-based virtual laboratory media for chemistry education.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students' basic competencies in Chemistry subjects on Compound Polarity by implementing Authentic Assessment assessments in inquiry-based Chemistry learning. This type of research is classroom action research, which consists of two cycles. Each cycle consists of four stages: action plan, implementation, observation/evaluation, and reflection. This research was carried out in the 11th grade of science (IA) 2 class, state senior high school (SMAN) 2 Dompu involving 36 students in 2021. Data on students' cognitive competence are collected by the test method, data on students' affective competence are collected by observation method, and data on students' psychomotor competence are collected by observation method. Furthermore, the three data were analyzed descriptively. The findings of this study showed that (1) there was an increase in students' cognitive competence from an average score of 67.72 with classical learning completeness of 52.84% in cycle I to an average score of 77.60 with classical learning completeness of 87.29% in cycle II, (2) there was an increase in students' affective competence from an average score of 81.40 with a suitable category in cycle I to an average score of 86.80 with an excellent category in cycle II, and (3) there was an increase in students' psychomotor competence from an average score of 67.43 with good category in cycle I to an average score of 78.25 with good category in cycle II. Thus, it can be concluded that there is an increase in students' basic competencies in chemistry through the implementation of classroom-based assessment in inquiry learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the use of Zenius.Net based learning video media on student chemistry learning outcomes. This type of research is descriptive quantitative. This research was carried out using the One Group Pretest-Posttest Design method which means that there is only one research group used. This research was conducted at MA Anshor with a total of 15 students, namely 10th grade as many as 8 people, and 11th grade as many as 7 people. Learning outcome data is taken based on students' cognitive tests. The data analysis technique used in this study combines descriptive data analysis for mean measurement and inferential statistics for significance testing of t-test values. The significance of the N-gain value is tested using a t-test (paired samples t-test). The average score obtained by students after using zenius.net-based learning videos of 76.47 is greater than the average score obtained by students before being given.

Abstract

The current study explores the advantages of project-based learning, which involves using real-world problems as a basis for gathering and integrating new knowledge. Specifically, the study investigates the implementation of project-based learning in the Solid Interface course within the Natural Science Education program. Through direct practice, students are required to master the course material, making it more applicable to real-world situations. To assess the effectiveness of this approach, an experimental method was used, which involved students conducting experiments, observing and experiencing the process, and presenting their results to the class for evaluation. This method provides students with the opportunity to learn independently, follow a process, analyze objects, draw evidence, and draw their own conclusions from the process being carried out. The objective of this research is to apply the project-based learning model and explore the utilization of natural zeolite rocks as an absorbent for heavy metal ions, specifically Plumbum and cadmium waste. The study successfully implemented the project-based learning approach, and the stages were carried out successfully. The results showed that cadmium is a silvery white metal that can be forged, and exposure to this metal can cause paralysis and even death. The study investigated the adsorption of metal ions by chelate Zeolite-EDTA on variations of particle size, including 212 μm, 125 μm, and 90 μm, with an adsorbate/adsorbent ratio of 20 mL/g, 30 mL/g, 40 mL/g, and 50 mL/g. The results indicated that the best adsorption of lead waste occurred with Zeolite-EDTA chelate at a particle size of 212 μm, with an adsorbate/adsorbent ratio of 30 mL/g. For cadmium wastewater, the best adsorption was achieved with Zeolite-EDTA chelate at a particle size of 212 μm, with an adsorbate/adsorbent ratio of 20 mL/g. These findings contribute to the growing body of literature on project-based learning and the use of natural zeolite rocks as an absorbent for heavy metal ions.

Abstract

This research paper presents the preparation and characterization of activated charcoal derived from palm coir (Borrassus flabellifer L.) that was activated using potassium hydroxide (KOH). The objective of this study was to assess the key characteristics of the activated charcoal, including moisture content, ash content, and surface area, and to determine the optimal conditions for the adsorption process of Rhodamine B dyes, such as adsorbent mass, contact time, and adsorbate concentration. Additionally, the surface morphology of coir charcoal before and after activation was investigated. The carbonization process was conducted at 300°C for 30 minutes, followed by activation using 1 M KOH for 24 hours. The resulting activated charcoal was subjected to various characterization techniques, including moisture content and ash content analysis, surface morphology examination using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), surface area determination using the Brenauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) method, and functional group identification through Fourier-Transform Infra Red (FTIR) spectroscopy. The findings revealed that the activated charcoal exhibited a water content of 1.537%, an ash content of 16.653%, and a surface area of 36.084 m2/g. The optimal conditions for the adsorption process were determined as follows: 1.0 gram of activated charcoal mass, 30 minutes of contact time, and a rhodamine B concentration of 30 ppm, resulting in adsorption efficiencies of 94.46%, 95.75%, and 94.42%, respectively. Furthermore, the surface morphology analysis demonstrated that non-activated charcoal exhibited irregular particle sizes and small pore sizes, while KOH-activated charcoal displayed an enhanced carbon pore surface and larger pore sizes.
