Abstract

The lack of communication skills in the learning of chemistry can negatively impact students' understanding of reduction-oxidation (redox) reactions. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the implementation of the discovery learning model on students' communication skills related to redox reactions. A quasi-experimental research design with a Non-Equivalent Control Group Design was employed. The research participants were students of class X MIPA 1 (experimental class) and class X MIPA 2 (control class) from SMA Negeri 1 Teluk Kuantan. The instrument used was a communication skills test sheet comprising five descriptive questions. The results indicated that 1) the implementation of the discovery learning model was rated as very good for each stage; 2) the writing communication skills of the experimental class were superior to those of the control class. In conclusion, the discovery learning model is an effective approach in enhancing students' communication skills on the subject of redox reactions in class X MIPA at SMA Negeri 1 Teluk Kuantan.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to produce a science literacy-based e-module prototype using a book creator focused on acid-base material and to investigate user responses to the product. The Plomp model was utilized for the design of the research. The e-module was validated by two material experts and one media expert. The trial of user responses was conducted on teachers and students. The results showed that the e-module met the criteria for validity with a high average score of 97.14% for material substance and 97.27% for learning design. The media aspect received an average score of 96% for visual communication and 98.33% for software utilization. The responses of both teachers and students were positive, with average scores of 93.70% and 86.07%, respectively.

Abstract

The present research aimed to describe the skills of 11th grade students in predicting reaction rate material. The need for this study arose due to the inadequacy of the teacher's assessments to elaborate on the students' predictive skills, particularly in reaction rate material. The participants were 26 students from the 11th grade Science-2 class of State Senior High School (SMAN) 5 Pontianak. A quantitative description with a case study approach was used to gather data. The students were administered a questionnaire immediately after the reaction rate lesson, consisting of three questions. The mean scores of the students were analyzed to determine the results. The results showed that 50% of the students were categorized as having a very low level of skill in predicting reaction rate material, 27% as having a low level, 19% as having a medium level, 4% as having a high level, and 0% as having a very high level. It can be concluded that the majority of the students have a very low level of skill in predicting reaction rate material. The findings of this study have implications for teachers in creating more suitable lesson plans, syllabi, and media to align with the students' standard of competency outlined in the curriculum. This study may also serve as a foundation for future research on knowledge and education sustainability.

Abstract

The limitation of using learning media atSMAN 1 Kalasan causes the learning of electrolyte and nonelectrolyte solutions to be less interesting and less effective. Therefore, learning can be supported by attractive video design in the form of Edpuzzle which hasthe potential to build better learning processes and outcomes. This research aims to evaluate the effect of Edpuzzle-based video implementation in electrolyte and nonelectrolyte solutions lessons on student learning outcomes. In form ofa Quasi-Experimental Design, this research was carried out by One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The research sample is students of X MIPA 2 that selected by simple random sampling. The instruments used were validation sheets, lesson plans, pretest, and posttest items, questions in Edpuzzle video, an observation sheet of Edpuzzle-based video implementation, and a students’ response questionnaire. Research data were analyzed by SPSS 25, Aiken’s Statistics, and descriptively. The results showed that using Edpuzzle-based video had an influence on students’ learning outcomes that support by Sig value. (2-tailed) < 0.05 andthe average of N-Gain is 0.8 (high). The average post-test is 96.7 (excellent). During Edpuzzle video implementation on learning, the cognitive achievement of C1, C2, and C3respectively levelcompleted are 100%, 100%, and 91.66%, while, C4 and C5 are respectively 22.22% and 41.66%, In addition, the achievement of learning outcomes indicator is also supported by observation for psychomotor and affective domains, with a respectively average scores 96.06% and 95.48%.  Edpuzzle-based video can be used as support for electrolyte and nonelectrolyte learning in senior high school.

Abstract

This study aims to provide a characterization of virgin coconut oil obtained through the acidification method, using tamarind seed skin as an oil extractor. The utilization of tamarind seeds is motivated by the fact that they are considered a waste product and are not commonly used by the community. Additionally, tamarind seeds contain organic acids, such as citric acid, tartaric acid, and malic acid, which can effectively hydrolyze the bond between oil and other substances in coconut flesh, such as proteins and carbohydrates. The characterization of virgin coconut oil includes a range of tests, such as organoleptic evaluation, density measurement, moisture content determination, free fatty acid analysis, and peroxide number determination, which are compared to coconut oil produced through heating. The virgin coconut oil is extracted from grated coconut flesh by mixing tamarind seed skin, which has been mashed, with grated coconut flesh in a 1:4 ratio. This mixture is then homogenized and incubated for approximately 10 minutes to extract the oil. The organoleptic evaluation results of the virgin coconut oil produced through acidification demonstrate a light yellow color with no detectable taste or odor, while the coconut oil produced through heating has a dark yellow color, a slightly rancid smell, and a distinct coconut oil taste. The density of the virgin coconut oil produced through acidification and heating is 0.870 g/mL and 0.868 g/mL, respectively. The moisture content of the virgin coconut oil produced through acidification and heating methods is 0.1713% and 0.1700%, respectively. The free fatty acid content for the acidification and heating methods is 0.14% and 3.252%, respectively. The peroxide number test shows that the acidification method yields a higher value of 27.41 meq O2 / kg compared to 5.694 meq O2 / kg for heating.

Abstract

This study addresses the insufficiency of teaching materials in the learning process and its negative impact on students' comprehension of provided material. To alleviate this issue, student worksheets based on Learning Cycle 5E were developed to be used as a learning resource for 10th-grade students studying stoichiometry at State Senior High School (SMAN) 1 X Koto Singkarak. The aim of this research was to create a valid and practical Student worksheet based on Learning Cycle 5E. Development research with the 4-D development model (define, design, development, and disseminate) was employed, with the first three stages executed. The define stage was conducted to identify the school's conditions and problems, while the design stage was used to create the initial student worksheet based on Learning Cycle 5E for stoichiometry material. The develop stage was carried out to refine the worksheet. Data were gathered using validation sheets and practicality questionnaires filled out by two chemistry lecturers, one chemistry teacher, and 10th-grade students of SMAN 1 X Koto Singkarak. Data analysis was conducted using a quantitative descriptive method. Results indicated that the Student worksheet based on Learning Cycle 5E met the valid criteria with a validation score of 91.37% and the practical criteria with a student response questionnaire score of 82.09%. Thus, the worksheet can be used as a learning resource.

Abstract

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa Korth.) has been traditionally used in the community for medicinal purposes. Kratom leaves have been reported to possess various biological activities such as antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antinociceptive effects. The biological activity of kratom leaves is believed to be attributed to the presence of secondary metabolites. The aim of this study was to investigate the content of secondary metabolite compounds in three types of kratom leaves, namely green, red, and white kratom. Each 200 g of kratom leaf powder was subjected to 72 hours of maceration with 1 L of 96% ethanol solvent. The resulting extract was filtered and concentrated using a water bath and an oven at a temperature of 50oC to obtain a concentrated extract. The extract was evaluated for its yield and secondary metabolite content using specific reagents for each test. The results revealed the presence of secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, triterpenoids, phenolics, tannins, and saponins in the red, green, and white kratom leaves. These findings provide a valuable reference for future bioactivity research and identification of the bioactive compounds present in the three variants of kratom leaves.

Abstract

The development of Articulate Storyline 3 (AS3)-based chemistry teaching resources on chemical bonding is the aim of this research. the subject of research was 10th-grade senior high school students. This research was conducted to investigate the form of creation and viability of chemical bonding teaching materials using the AS3 application. Minor modifications are made to the Borg and Gall method for instructional design for the production of AS3-based chemical bonding teaching materials. The technique consists of five steps: preliminary studies, product design plan (planning and development), product validation (validation design and revision), field trials, and final product dissemination. The instruments used in this study were interview sheets, questionnaires in the form of instrument validation for material experts, and media experts, tests for students, and documentation. Material expert data, media, and student responses were obtained and analyzed to describe the validity and feasibility of teaching materials. The findings indicated that the optimal percentage was 96.42%, while the very excellent percentage was 96.66%. The results of the evaluation of the feasibility of teaching materials by material specialists and media specialists were 83.07% and 84.61 %, respectively, in the very excellent category. According to the findings of expert evaluations and field testing of chemical teaching materials based on AS3, this chemical bond material is very appropriate for use in educational settings.

Abstract

Breast cancer is the highest disease in the world beating lung cancer, so various alternatives are needed to find a treatment. Screening drug discovery against breast cancer by targeting BCL-2 occupies the main position and is the goal of this study. The method used is insilico. the material used is 10 compounds from R. tomentose, 2w3l protein from RCSB, PLANT docking software, the docking coordinate used is X: 39.8057 Y: 26.9355 Z: -12.4145 with a radius of 11.1871, then to find out the type of bond and residue involved using discovery studio. The results of this study were docking scores from -91.3871(5'-Desgalloylstachyurin) to -65.4754 (Afrormosin), activity predictions from PASS online from 0.174 (Rhodomyrtosone C) to 0.799 (Lupeol). Based on the docking score, three compounds that have the potential to inhibit the work of BCL-2 were obtained namely 5'-Desgalloylstachyurin, Rhodomyrtosone B and Rhodomyrtosone D.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the misconceptions of 11 third semester Chemistry Education students at Cenderawasih University in relation to online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. Online learning poses various challenges for both students and lecturers, resulting in incomplete explanations and hindering students' understanding of the material, leading to possible misconceptions. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, utilizing diagnostic tests with a Certainty or Response Index (CRI) and interviews. The findings revealed that 41% of the students had a clear understanding of the acid-base concepts, 30% lacked understanding, and 29% had misconceptions. The students' misconceptions related to six subconcepts in acid-base materials, including acid-base theory, acid-base indicators, acid strength (pH), weak acid-base equilibrium constant (Ka/Kb), calculation of solution pH, and the concept of pH in the environment, with a range of misconceptions from 9-45%. This study highlights the need for addressing misconceptions in online learning, specifically in the acid-base topic, to ensure effective understanding and learning outcomes for students.
