Abstract

Recently, the Indonesian public has been stirred by various comments regarding several videos showing religious activities at Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School, which were considered deviating from religious teachings. These public comments sparked a response from the school's leader (PG), which was found to contain hate speech that was even more shocking. Therefore, this study aims to "uncover the types of hate speech found in PG's statements and critically analyze them through linguistic units as the means of delivery." This research employs a qualitative-quantitative approach and a descriptive-exploratory method, with the data object being PG's clarification statements during a Talk Show event.Based on the data analysis, the following results were obtained: First, six types of hate speech were identified in PG's statements, namely: (1) provocation (27%), (2) defamation (20%), (3) incitement (20%), (4) blasphemy (17%), (5) insult (15%), and (6) spreading fake news (1%). Second, the hate speech was conveyed through four types of linguistic units: (1) sentences (77%), (2) phrases (16%), (3) clauses (4%), and (4) words (3%). Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the dominant form of hate speech expressed by PG is through the use of sentences. This type of speech is primarily aimed at defending and justifying his belief that the religious policies and activities at the Islamic Boarding School he leads do not violate religious teachings and do not harm other parties or institutions.

Abstract

This research aimed to detect students' ability to write narrative text using local legendary picture series and further explore their perceptions of using picture series in writing narratives. A descriptive quantitative research design was employed, and 30 students (10 males and 20 females) participated as respondents in the present study. Furthermore, the students were asked to write a narrative text based on a series of pictures from the local legend of Danau Toba. The findings indicated that picture series significantly enhanced students' narrative writing skills. The average scores revealed that the organization, vocabulary, and grammar were 3.19, 3.43, and 2.92 respectively, categorized into the "Good" level. Meanwhile, the average score for mechanical ability was 2.46, categorized as "Enough". Furthermore, the majority of students viewed positively to the use of picture series, with 46.67% strongly agreeing and 46.67% agreeing that picture series enhanced their ability to absorb and retain information. Thus, the picture series used are effective media for learning narrative writing skills. This study may serve pedagogical implication to the teaching of writing skills. Therefore, the researchers recommend that teachers integrate picture series in their teaching strategies and next researchers could explore the use of picture series in other text types and across various English language skills to provide broader insights and potentially more robust pedagogical strategies.

Abstract

Educational psychology course and the epistemic beliefs of prospective teachers play a role in forming a competent teacher. While there is substantial literature exploring teachers’ epistemic belief, its interplay with course studies by prospective English teacher remains unclear. This research provides a novel understanding on the interplay of epistemic beliefs with educational psychology course, and achievement of prospective English teacher by integrating an explanatory sequential mixed methods design. Using quantitative survey to collect GPA (Grade Average Points), epistemic beliefs and perception of educational psychology, this study involve 102 EFL students at Brawijaya University through convenience sampling. Descriptive statistical and correlation analysis conducted in the first stage reveal their epistemic was moderate and their perception was high, and only between their epistemic beliefs and perception was found a strong correlation. Through confirming or disconfirming sampling, representative from the first stage participated in qualitative phase for semi-structured interview, resulting in justification of their positive perception and confirmation of the interconnection with epistemic beliefs. Findings imply there is a need to comprise aspects of high epistemic beliefs to have a more positive educational psychology course, that encourage adequate developmental feedback, active learning environments, inclusive advocacy, and student self-efficacy.. The high interest in unlisted content in the current module implies the need for material relevance of the course. The implication is for EFL teacher education to reconsider the content in educational psychology with students’ epistemic beliefs in order to equip English education students to become effective teachers.

Abstract

Translanguaging offers potential significance in assisting EFL students’ engagement in L2 communication, making it valuable to investigate whether students’ perception of translanguaging correlates with their willingness to communicate in a second language. This mixed-methods study explores the relationship between students’ perception and L2 willingness to communicate in classroom communicative settings. 65 participants from two universities enrolled in an English education program participated in this study. The quantitative data were collected using 5-Likert scale questionnaires and qualitative data through in-depth interviews with subset participants. The quantitative data, including descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression analysis, were formulated in SPSS 26. Meanwhile, the interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings showed that students’ perception of translanguaging correlates significantly and positively to their L2 WTC (r = .587). Based on the qualitative data, key themes related to the significance of translanguaging, such as facilitation of understanding, self-confidence improvement, reduced anxiety, and promotion of a positive classroom environment emerged as factors contributing to the students’ increased L2 WTC. These findings suggest that students’ perception of translanguaging influences their attitudes toward L2 communication, leading to a decreased or increased WTC level. Thus, translanguaging should be encouraged as an alternative strategy in L2 classrooms to enhance communication in EFL settings, particularly by maximizing L2 understanding and fostering an emotionally safe learning environment.

Abstract

Reading is an important aspect of learning a language. One of the basic aspects of reading is the large vocabulary. Students' vocabulary acquisition can be obtained from the learning process. However, in the vocabulary learning process, problems are still caused by the limitations of the media used. The limited media used causes students' interest in learning to decrease. Responding to these problems, this research aims to develop mobile learning which can be used as an aid for learning the vocabulary of object names from gamelan musical instruments. In developing mobile learning, the research method used is research and development (R&D). The research subjects in this study are teachers, media experts, and material experts. Data collection techniques used interview techniques and questionnaire techniques. Sigamel mobile learning was developed based on analysis of problems, needs, and revisions based on expert validation results. The design validation results obtained a score of 4 from material experts in the good category while the score obtained from media experts was 4.7 in the very good category. The development of Sigamel mobile learning is worthy of being developed in Javanese language learning. The results of this research state explicitly that sigamel mobile learning can be developed into a tool for learning Javanese which focuses on noun vocabulary material. Therefore, teachers are advised to use sigamel mobile learning in learning.

Abstract

Reading is the most important skills in language learning and teaching. This study aims at identifying secondary school English language teachers’ perceived and actual reading proficiency level and the correlation between these variables. The researchers employed mixed methods design and used questionnaire, proficiency test and interview to collect data from the participants. There were 112 secondary school teachers who take part in this study and among them four teachers were interviewed. The data gathered from the instruments were analyzed using SPSS version 24 for the quantitative and NVivo version 10 for the qualitative data. The results of this study revealed that secondary school English language teachers perceived proficiency level of reading skill was high. The proficiency test revealed that the levels secondary school English language teachers actual reading skills was medium. It was also found that there was a positive (r=.329) but not significant correlation between the teachers’ perceived and actual proficiency level of reading skills. The results indicated that teachers thought they had high proficiency level but their actual reading proficiency was not equivalent with their perceptions. This implies that there should be professional and skill development trainings given for the teachers. Besides, teachers should make themselves familiar with reading materials apart from the text book they are using in the classroom.

Abstract

The use of students’ artwork as learning media in General English courses is becoming more widely acknowledged for its many advantages. In order to clarify the significant and the implication of students’ artwork as learning media, this research was conducted. The research questions, namely: 1) what type of students’ artwork is chosen as learning media in General English courses? 2) How is the process of teaching using student artwork as a learning media? 3) what are the advantages of using student’ artwork as a learning media? This research employed a qualitative case study approach. Data were taken from the result of interview to the five students of Fine Arts study program as the respondents then analyzed in percentage and NVivo 12 analysis. It is concluded that student’s artwork as a learning media should be chosen based on students’ preference. In relation to students’ preference, paintings and sculptures are chosen as learning media in General English courses. The choice of artwork as learning media can increase motivation which helps students learn vocabulary, grammar, writing and speaking more quickly and eventually enables them to communicate in English. Accordingly, when students used artwork as learning media for learning English, they simultaneously advance their understanding of the arts and acquire practice speaking English as a foreign language. Therefore, further investigation is recommended to provide an understanding the implication of students’ artwork as learning media. The research has limitation because it focused only on the English instruction. but did not address assessment using artwork. Therefore, further investigation is recommended to provide an understanding the implication of students’ artwork as learning media.

Abstract

This research addresses the need to enhance critical thinking skills in junior high school students through effective instructional design, particularly in the context of learning news texts. The study is based on the premise that problem-based learning (PBL) can significantly improve students' critical thinking by engaging them in real-world problem-solving scenarios. Given the growing emphasis on critical thinking as a core educational objective, it is essential to develop instructional models that not only teach content but also foster higher-order thinking skills. The primary aim of this research is to design an instructional model for teaching news texts in junior high school and to assess its validity and effectiveness. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach, utilizing the ADDIE model, which involves five stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Following the development of the instructional design, it underwent validation by both learning experts and practitioners. The validation process yielded high scores, with learning experts rating it at 95.83% and practitioners at 88.89%, resulting in an overall average validity score of 92.36%, categorizing the design as highly valid. In practice, the problem-based learning model was implemented in classrooms, and its impact on students' learning outcomes was evaluated. The students achieved an average learning score of 86%, indicating the instructional design's effectiveness in delivering content. Furthermore, the assessment of students' critical thinking skills showed an average score of 79%, placing it in the "good" category. These findings suggest that the PBL-based instructional design is effective in not only teaching news texts but also in enhancing students' critical thinking skills, making it a valuable approach for junior high school education.
