Abstract

Paulo Freire's philosophy of education, known as Pedagogy of the oppressed, is a conceptual narrative closely related to the philosophy of humanism. The education of the oppressed has a simple understanding, which is education that liberates or is anti-dehumanizing. One of the approaches used by Paulo Freire to address the problem of dehumanization in Brazilian society is literacy education, which, according to Freire, involves not only reading the word but also reading the world. Freire's literacy practice is not limited to formal learning in schools but is also carried out through social interaction and daily activities. This study is qualitative research with a literature review approach. Furthermore, the data sources in this study were obtained from primary, secondary, and preliminary sources, which were then analyzed by reducing all the collected data. Paulo Freire's philosophy of education is constructed upon ontology, epistemology, and axiology, which correlate with the philosophy of Islamic education. After analyzing, some weaknesses were also found in Paulo Freire's concept of education regarding its humanism as a perspective in understanding educational issues. The practice of Paulo Freire's philosophy of education also resembles normative guidance on education, and it tends to lack a final goal, relying solely on the critical consciousness of the learners in interpreting reality.

Abstract

This article focuses on the examination of traditional burial rituals within the Toraja tribe. It compares the execution of funeral rites in the past, which were deemed customary, with those conducted in the late 1990s. By conducting a comparative analysis of the two ceremonies, it is anticipated that we may ascertain whether there has been any alteration in the execution of the ritual. According to Durkheim, the notion of the holy appears to be a genuine aspect of religious beliefs and practices in religious events. Religious individuals, when closely observed, distinguish between two distinct realms: the sacred realm and the profane realm. Sacred entities are consistently seen as superior, possessing great power, prohibited from engaging in regular interactions, and deserving of utmost reverence. Conversely, profane entities are mundane, unremarkable, and pertain to practical routines of everyday existence.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of social support during primary years on the development of social competence in tertiary education. Recognizing the pivotal role of early experiences in shaping lifelong outcomes, the researchers draw upon extensive research to investigate the nuanced relationships that unfold across these critical stages of human development. Hence, this study aims to probe the relationship between social support during the primary years and self-competence among the randomly selected tertiary students of a private sectarian University in Cebu City, Philippines through a descriptive correlational study. Data were gathered online and face to face using valid and reliable 4-point adapted Likert-type survey questionnaires. Results revealed that both social support (x̄ = 3.14, SD = 0.87) and social competence (x̄ = 2.84, SD = 0.76) were described as high. Pearson's r correlation was also found to be significant, r(180) = 0.17, p = .02177, p<0.5, thus rejecting the null hypothesis and concluding that there is a relatively weak positive correlation (r = 0.17) between the levels of self-confidence and self-efficacy among the students while engaging in online learning. In essence, the findings imply that students perceiving elevated levels of social support during their formative years are likely to exhibit heightened social competence later in life. This study recommends that future research endeavors adopt an extended timeframe; tracking participants from primary through tertiary education as such, an approach would provide insights into how these factors evolve and exert lasting effects.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the influence of cooperative learning on the increase in students' interest in learning in the context of education. A qualitative approach with the type of library research is used to explore the concept of cooperative learning and its impact on students' interest in learning. Through secondary data analysis and using Miles and Huberman data analysis methods, this study gained an in-depth understanding of how cooperative learning affects students' learning interests. The results of the study show that the application of the cooperative learning model results in a significant increase in students' interest in learning. Factors such as the integration of game elements, cooperation between students in teams, and an inclusive environment play a key role in stimulating greater interest in learning. Cooperative learning strategies not only improve academic achievement, but also create high motivation for students to understand the learning material better. Nonetheless, challenges such as an unsupportive environment and active student involvement need to be addressed through a precise and sustainable approach that involves collaboration between educators, students, and education stakeholders.
