Abstract

Indonesia, as a multicultural country, faces serious challenges in maintaining social cohesion due to the increasing potential for conflicts based on intolerance. Islamic Religious Education, which has tended to be normative, is considered to be less than optimal in fostering religious moderation. This study aims to analyze the development of Islamic Religious Education materials based on multicultural values to strengthen religious tolerance and moderation, as well as to examine the role of teachers and school culture. The research uses a qualitative approach with a multisite study design at Panca Budi High School and Darussalam High School. Data collection was conducted through observation, in-depth interviews, and document studies. The results show that the integration of multicultural values into the curriculum and Islamic Religious Education materials is carried out systematically by emphasizing the social dimensions of Islam and applying contextual and dialogical learning strategies. Teachers act as agents of moderation who build an inclusive classroom climate, supported by a school culture that affirms the value of diversity through institutional policies and practices. These findings reinforce multicultural education theory and offer a model for developing an Islamic Religious Education curriculum that is adaptive to the realities of a pluralistic society and relevant to teachers and education policymakers.

Abstract

Islamic education amid the tide of modernization faces serious challenges in the form of weakening spiritual character and the disconnection of religious values from the local cultural context. This condition calls for an educational approach that is not only normative, but also contextual and rooted in local wisdom. This study aims to identify the Islamic educational values contained in the Sedulur Papat Limo Pancer philosophy and analyze strategies for integrating them into the spiritual character development of students in Nagori Maligas Bayu. This study uses a qualitative approach with a literature study method and a philosophical-contextual analysis of the Sedulur Papat Limo Pancer concept, combined with an Islamic educational perspective. The results show that the Sedulur Papat Limo Pancer philosophy contains Islamic educational values, including purity, sincerity, gratitude, empathy, responsibility, discipline, moral courage, respect for parents, and balance in life. The integration of these values in Islamic education has implications for strengthening the spiritual character of students holistically through a reflective, dialogical, and locally-based approach. This study emphasizes the importance of local wisdom as a strategic resource for the development of relevant and sustainable Islamic education.

Abstract

The development of the digital age and globalization has posed serious challenges to the character building of the younger generation, particularly in terms of weakening independence, self-regulation, and spiritual resilience. Cognitive-oriented education is considered incapable of responding to the crisis of dependency, instant culture, and the increasing degradation of values. This study aims to reconstruct the concept of independent character education according to the thoughts of Ibn Qayyim al-Jauziyyah and analyze its relevance in the context of contemporary Islamic education. This study uses a qualitative approach with a figure-based study type based on library research. Data were obtained from the primary works of Ibn Qayyim al-Jauziyyah and relevant secondary literature, then analyzed using thematic content analysis techniques. The results show that, according to Ibn Qayyim, independent character education is built holistically through gradual education, exemplary behavior, habituation, simplicity of life, utilization of time, and spiritual control through muhasabah, with tauhid and tazkiyatun nafs as the main foundations. Independence is understood as the freedom of the soul from worldly dependence and lust. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of integrating spiritual values into Islamic character education so that the formation of students' independence is transformative, sustainable, and relevant to the challenges of modern education.

Abstract

The historical formation of Islamic traditional institutions in Aceh, particularly dayah, remains underexplored, especially regarding the relationship between their socio-historical origins and foundational educational practices. This study aims to analyze the historical establishment and basic education model of Dayah Raudhatul Huda. Using a qualitative descriptive design with socio-historical and Islamic education approaches, data were collected through in-depth interviews with dayah leaders and supported by document analysis. The findings indicate that the institution emerged through strong community participation, driven by religious consciousness, waqf contributions, and the need for accessible Islamic education. Its educational model reflects the salafiyah tradition at the ula and wustha levels, focusing on classical Islamic texts while integrating faith, ritual practice, and moral discipline as core elements of student formation. These findings highlight that the sustainability of dayah lies in its community-based foundation and value-oriented pedagogy. The study implies that such a model offers a relevant framework for strengthening character education and religious literacy in contemporary Islamic education systems.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the needs for Akidah Akhlak teaching materials based on a communication approach and storytelling methods among students at MIN Pekanbaru, Riau. This study employed a qualitative approach involving 77 students as participants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation to explore students’ learning experiences, difficulties, and preferences regarding the teaching materials used. The results indicate that most students perceive Akidah Akhlak lessons as unengaging, difficult to understand, and supported by conventional teaching materials that lack visual elements and interaction. Students demonstrated a high interest in story-based teaching materials that help them understand moral values and make sound decisions. This study also underscores the importance of integrating a communication-based approach to enhance student engagement and understanding. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of needs analysis with story-based methods and a communication-based approach as the foundation for instructional material development. The implications of this study suggest that the development of innovative, communicative, and story-based instructional materials is necessary to enhance students’ moral understanding and foster holistic character development.

Abstract

The transformation of pesantren education cannot be separated from the pressures of educational policies during the New Order era, which emphasized standardization, depoliticization, and integration into the national education system, thereby potentially reducing institutional autonomy and the distinctiveness of Islamic scholarly traditions. In the Reformasi era, socio-political changes and globalization have further required pesantren to adapt more dynamically. This study aims to analyze how pesantren respond to these changes and their implications for curriculum, teaching methods, and Islamic educational identity. This research employs a qualitative historical approach through document analysis, policy review, and secondary literature. The findings reveal that pesantren function as adaptive and reflective educational actors through strategies of selective adaptation. This transformation has led to the emergence of a hybrid educational model that integrates Islamic intellectual traditions with the demands of modern education. These changes are not linear, but rather represent a process of negotiation between tradition, state policy, and global developments. The implications of this study highlight the importance of granting greater autonomy to pesantren, as well as the relevance of the hybrid model in developing Islamic education that balances tradition and modernity.

Abstract

This study is grounded in a fundamental problem in contemporary educational practices, which remain dominated by surface learning, thereby failing to foster deep understanding, reflective awareness, and the integration of values in learners. In the context of Islamic education, this issue becomes more complex due to the dichotomy between cognitive and spiritual dimensions. Therefore, this study aims to analyze and reconstruct the paradigm of educators in deep learning by integrating the roles of mu‘allim, murabbi, and mu’addib, as well as to identify relevant pedagogical principles. This research employs a qualitative approach through library research, utilizing content analysis of both modern educational theories and Islamic educational literature. The findings reveal that the educator paradigm must be integrative, positioning teachers as transformative agents who connect cognitive, affective, and spiritual dimensions. Furthermore, five key pedagogical principles are identified: meaningful, reflective, contextual, value-based, and holistic learning. The implications of this study highlight the importance of developing learning models that are not only academically effective but also capable of shaping learners’ character, awareness, and moral responsibility in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

Learning in pesantren is often perceived as a traditional system that lags behind modern educational institutions. However, various digitalization efforts have been undertaken as a form of adaptation to the advancement of science and technology. Nevertheless, studies on podcast-based learning in pesantren remain limited. This study aims to analyze the implementation of podcast-based learning, its implications for the learning process, and the challenges faced at Pesantren Darul Ilmi. This research employs a qualitative approach, with data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving the pesantren leader, assistant teachers, and students. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that podcast-based learning functions as a complementary medium that supports conventional methods such as lectures, simulations, and role-playing. Its implications include enhancing students’ knowledge, strengthening social education, and expanding the promotion of the pesantren through digital media. However, its implementation still faces limitations in resources and the absence of dedicated management. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening management systems to ensure the sustainability of digital learning innovation in pesantren.
