Abstract

This study examines the social dynamics influencing children's reading interests in Betungan Village, Bengkulu City, amidst the widespread use of gadgets and the internet. Adopting a qualitative approach grounded in a social definition paradigm and symbolic interactionism theory, the research utilized observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation for data collection. Participants included four children aged 8–12 years and three parents, chosen through purposive sampling. The findings suggest that frequent gadget use has altered children's reading habits, shifting them away from both printed and digital educational books. Instead, children are increasingly drawn to visual and interactive media, particularly short videos on social media, which offer instant entertainment without requiring deep cognitive engagement. Key factors contributing to the decline in reading interest include reliance on digital content, a lack of parental reading role models, and limited access to books at home. Despite these challenges, some parents continue to nurture reading habits. Data triangulation revealed that reading interest is shaped through social interaction and the meanings developed within the family. The lack of parental reading examples and the prevalence of digital entertainment undermine literacy culture. The study suggests digital literacy training for parents, creating appealing reading spaces, and integrating technology into reading activities to foster children's reading interest in the digital era.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the selection process of candidates for the Aceh Representative Council (DPRA) from the Adil Sejahtera Party (PAS) in the 2024 elections in Aceh Province. This study uses Rahat and Hazan's candidacy theory approach to reveal the dimensions, space, and actors in the selection process. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. Data was collected through interviews, literature studies, and supplemented with internal party documents. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model through the stages of reduction, presentation, and data verification. The results of the study reveal three patterns of candidate selection for DPRA members from PAS: (1) closed selection pattern; (2) exclusive and centralistic selection pattern. The dynamics of these patterns and actors show that the selection process for DPRA candidates from PAS is not entirely meritocratic but is the result of negotiations among party elites. This study concludes that the selection process for DPRA candidates from PAS is an arena of elitist power contestation. The strong influence of religious leaders in the party means that the selection of candidates is largely determined by party elites.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strategy of preventing the terror ideology of Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) by the Aceh Regional Task Force Densus 88 Anti-Terror Police in Aceh Tamiang Regency. The analysis is grounded in Karl Mannheim’s theory of ideology and utopia, alongside the police function theory in counterterrorism. A qualitative case study approach was adopted, involving in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that JI’s ideology in Aceh Tamiang is deeply rooted through social networks, conservative religious education, and kinship-based recruitment. The Task Force has implemented three main strategies: early detection and preemptive actions, preventive approaches, and repressive enforcement. However, the application of the pentahelix model intended to involve government, academia, media, business sector, and civil society remains suboptimal. Limited personnel, insufficient budget, and lack of specialized training pose significant challenges to the effectiveness of counter-radicalization programs. This study concludes that the effectiveness of preventing the terror ideology of Jama Islamiyah in Aceh Tamiang is highly dependent on strengthening cross-sector synergy and increasing the institutional capacity of the Aceh Task Force Densus 88 AT Polri.

Abstract

The issue of fertilizer subsidies extends beyond the technical aspects of budget allocation, distribution methods, and discussions surrounding state food sovereignty. Importantly, the fertilizer subsidy policy is also intertwined with the power dynamics among policy actors, which may encompass political strategies. This study utilizes secondary data sourced from official platforms, including the ministry's website, the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), and media reports concerning public statements issued by relevant authorities in both the legislative and executive branches. The findings of this article suggest that the fertilizer subsidy policy serves as a political populism strategy, bolstering political support for Jokowi and the candidates he endorses, particularly to maximize electoral gains in the three provinces with the largest voter populations in Indonesia: East Java, West Java, and Central Java. This is evidenced by the strategic allocation of the fertilizer subsidy budget, which is intensified in the years preceding presidential elections, specifically in 2019 and 2024. Consequently, although farmers are not the sole determinants of the electoral success of Jokowi and Prabowo-Gibran, their significant numbers at both national and local levels in these three provinces render them a crucial demographic to secure.

Abstract

This study analyzes the relevance of Paulo Freire's thoughts on critical education in the context of political transformation in Indonesia. Paulo Freire emphasizes the importance of dialogue, critical consciousness, and praxis as the main foundations in the process of human emancipation. In Freire's view, education serves not only as a transfer of knowledge, but also as a means of liberation to form a conscious, critical, and social-politically active subject. Indonesia as a developing democracy faces various political challenges, such as social polarization, low political literacy, and inequality of access and participation of citizens in the democratic process. This study uses a qualitative approach by analyzing secondary data in the form of books, scientific journals, and articles related to critical education and political dynamics in Indonesia. The analysis is focused on the potential application of Freire's thinking in answering the challenge of democracy. The results show that Freire-style critical education is relevant to encourage more inclusive, reflective, and democratic political participation. Critical education is able to equip citizens with critical thinking skills, awareness of political rights and obligations, and encourage active involvement in democratic life. Therefore, this study recommends the integration of Freire's critical education principles into the national education curriculum in order to strengthen the quality of democracy and encourage a more just and sustainable political transformation.

Abstract

Indonesia is entering a demographic bonus period that will peak in 2030, thus opening up great opportunities for national economic growth. Increasing the proportion of the productive age population can boost productivity and GDP growth if supported by adequate quality of human resources. However, challenges arise in the bureaucratic sector, including in the Secretariat of the North Sumatra Provincial DPRD, which faces a high workload and a less conducive work environment. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the influence of work environment and work motivation on employee productivity to support the improvement of performance and quality of public services. The approach used was quantitative with a survey method, through the distribution of questionnaires to 71 respondents. The data obtained were analyzed using multiple linear regression with the help of SPSS version 26. The results showed that partially, the work environment did not have a significant effect on work productivity (significance value 0.457 > 0.05), while work motivation had a partial significant effect on employee work productivity (significance value 0.022 < 0.05). Simultaneously, the two independent variables had a significant effect on employee work productivity with a significance value of 0.031 and a determination coefficient (R²) of 0.096. This shows that 9.6% of the variation in work productivity can be explained by these two variables.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the Elderly Health Center Program in Sumorame Village, Candi District, Sidoarjo Regency, using George C. Edwards III's policy implementation theory as the basis for analysis. The purpose of this study is to determine how the implementation of the Elderly Health Center Program improves the health of the elderly in Sumorame Village. The research method used was a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis, using George C. Edwards III's (1980) policy implementation theory, which involves four main indicators, namely communication, resources, disposition, and bureaucratic structure. The results showed that program communication was quite effective, as indicated by the clear and consistent delivery of information through WhatsApp groups and physical letters. However, there were obstacles in terms of resources, such as limited health workers, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of formal training for new cadres, even though budget support from the village government increased every year. In terms of disposition, the implementers showed high dedication and commitment, while the bureaucratic structure did not yet have written Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The findings emphasize the importance of improving the quality of resources, providing more comprehensive facilities, and developing standard operating procedures so that the program runs in a more focused and sustainable manner. In addition, cross-sector collaboration and family involvement are important factors in realizing healthy, independent, and productive elderly people.

Abstract

The territorial dispute over four islands: Mangkir Gadang, Mangkir Ketek, Lipan, and Panjang between Aceh and North Sumatra in early 2025 became a national polemic highlighting issues of boundary demarcation, cultural identity, and the dynamics of central regional relations. This issue received extensive media coverage, particularly in Harian Serambi Indonesia (SI), which plays a significant role in shaping public opinion in Aceh. This study aims to analyze how Serambi Indonesia frames the dispute over the four islands by applying Robert N. Entman’s framing analysis model, which encompasses four elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgements, and treatment recommendations. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, focusing on news texts. The findings reveal that Serambi Indonesia framed the issue by positioning North Sumatra as the party attempting to seize the four islands located in Aceh Singkil. Furthermore, the coverage highlighted the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) as the main actor triggering the conflict, as it unilaterally designated the four islands as part of North Sumatra. In addition, the ministry was portrayed as neglecting the protests voiced by the Acehnese government and society against the decision. Eventually, the coverage concluded with the presidential decision affirming that the four islands rightfully belong to Aceh.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of three digital platforms introduced by Indonesia’s General Elections Commission (KPU): the Logistics Information System (SiLog), the Voter Data System (Sidalih), and the Management Information System (SiMan). These platforms represent KPU’s efforts to modernize election administration through digital transformation. The objective of this research is to explore how each system functions, their respective roles, and the challenges encountered in promoting transparency, accountability, and operational efficiency in election management. The study employs a qualitative approach through a combination of literature analysis and interviews with key officials involved in electoral operations. Findings indicate that the three systems operate in an interconnected manner: Sidalih manages voter registration data, SiLog oversees the distribution of election logistics, and SiMan facilitates internal administrative coordination. Nonetheless, the study identifies persistent obstacles related to infrastructure limitations, uneven digital competence among personnel, and insufficient system integration. Overall, the digitalization of election management through SiLog, Sidalih, and SiMan contributes to strengthening the governance of electoral processes in Indonesia, though further improvements in technical capacity and institutional coordination remain essential for achieving optimal performance.

Abstract

This study aims to find out how the methods and level of competence of journalists in South Sumatra in integrating media and information literacy into journalism practices and what are the obstacles faced in implementing it. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and text analysis. The results of the study show that Palembang Express journalists have a high level of competence (Advanced) in integrating media and information literacy. They have personal competence, Critical Understanding, and good communication, and are constantly undergoing training and experience to improve their abilities. This allows them to produce accurate, balanced, and useful news for the community. The implementation of the integration of media and information literacy in journalism practice is a very important step to ensure high-quality, accurate, and useful news production for the community. Journalists who have strong media and information literacy will be able to understand, analyze, and evaluate information from various media sources, so that they can produce accurate, balanced, and informative news. The obstacles faced by journalists in implementing media and information literacy can be categorized into three, namely: lack of formal training and education, pressure to produce news quickly, and limited access to information sources. These constraints can have a negative impact on the integrity and quality of news produced by journalists. To overcome this, efforts are needed to improve media and information literacy among journalists. These efforts can be made through training, education, and development in the media industry.
