Abstract

The demand for horticultural products, particularly the Golden Isis variety of dragon fruit, continues to increase along with population growth and expanding market needs. However, limited land availability, low community skills in cultivation, and disturbances from wild animals have hindered the Mitra Makmur farmer group in Sadamantra Village from meeting this demand. This community service program aims to enhance the community’s capacity in yard-based dragon fruit cultivation as an alternative source of household income, while also strengthening business management and financial administration within the farmer group. The implementation method consisted of five main stages: socialization, training (cultivation, business planning, and financial management), application of simple technologies (lightweight steel poles and solar-powered lamps), mentoring and evaluation, and designing a program sustainability strategy. The results of the program showed a significant improvement in knowledge of cultivation techniques, business plan development skills, and financial literacy. In addition, 25 households successfully realized dragon fruit cultivation in their yards by installing lightweight steel poles as supporting structures. The program also encouraged positive social changes, including increased awareness of productive yard utilization, active involvement of farmer group members in business management, and the emergence of a collaborative culture in collective marketing systems. Thus, this program not only improved the community’s technical skills but also strengthened local economic resilience and opened opportunities for sustainable horticultural business development.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve the capacity of local tour guides in the Lasem Heritage City area, Rembang Regency, Central Java. The main problem faced by the tour guide community in Lasem is the lack of official and standardized guides that can be used as a common reference in conveying information to tourists. This has an impact on inconsistencies in the delivery of historical and cultural narratives, as well as reducing the quality of the tourism experience. In addition, some guides also still need to improve their communication skills, interesting guiding techniques, and digital media-based promotional strategies. In response to these needs, this community service activity was carried out through a series of collaborative processes between academics and the local community, starting from compiling the content of the “Jelajah Kota Pusaka Lasem” guidebook, training in delivering history-based narratives, to strengthening promotional skills and the use of social media. This activity also involved the cultural community and active guides in the process of compiling materials, validating content with local historians, and conducting guide simulations as a means of practice. This activity uses the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method which places the community as the main subject. The results of this program showed that the mentoring activity succeeded in increasing the understanding, confidence, and quality of narrative delivery by tour guides. The guidebook that was compiled has become a common reference that strengthens the consistency of information and the tourist attraction of Lasem as a heritage city. This program also opens up space for ongoing collaboration between local stakeholders in developing community-based cultural tourism in a more systematic and sustainable manner.

Abstract

Technology implementation in rural areas often faces sustainability challenges due to a lack of user focus. In Sei Penjara Village, specific problems were identified in inefficient, high-risk agricultural management, and a high dependence on a single individual. To address these issues, this program adopted a Human Centered Technology approach through a two track strategy that integrates the development of Internet of Things (IoT) hardware for precision agriculture with human resource empowerment through digital marketing training. The implementation method is through technology design and preparation, including the design of soil and water nutrient monitoring tools, application development, and implementation, installation, and training on the use of IoT tools, sensors, and applications. The results in the field show that the results of community service activities have a real, direct, and measurable impact on increasing the capacity of village communities, the application of IoT-based soil and water nutrient monitoring tools has been proven to increase fertilization efficiency by ± 25% and reduce agricultural operational costs by around 35%, more than 80% of training participants are able to use ChatBot independently, participants are able to produce promotional content independently, understand product storytelling strategies, and utilize social media analytics features to reach a wider market, and the next stage plan is to monitor the development of the impact of the IoT tools produced in optimizing community harvests. If there are obstacles, they will be evaluated, but if there are no obstacles, this program will be implemented in villages in Langkat Regency and its surroundings.
