Abstract

Vocabulary skills. While previous research has demonstrated the effectiveness of the Duolingo app in enhancing vocabulary acquisition, studies focusing on students’ learning experiences remain limited. A pre-research survey indicated that Duolingo is the most preferred application for independent vocabulary learning. This study explores the experiences of eighth-semester students in learning English vocabulary using Duolingo, focusing on cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects. A qualitative case study method was employed, with data collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews involving students from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in a private university in West Kalimantan. The findings underscore the importance of integrating mobile technology as a standalone, enjoyable, and meaningful tool for vocabulary learning.

Abstract

Comprehending reading text in many genres is one of the main goals in learning English at the Junior High School level. Many innovative methods have been adapted and implemented by numerous scholars to improve this receptive skill. Thus, this study exposes the effectiveness of the Global Method to improve reading comprehension of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Sigi and focuses on Narrative text. A quasi-experimental design was utilized involving two classes: an experimental class taught using the Global Method and a control class taught using conventional methods. A total of 46 students participated in this study. Both groups were given pre-tests and post-tests to measure their reading comprehension before and after the treatment. Paired sample t-tests and independent sample t-tests are applied to determine the significance differences between the two groups. The results present that the experimental class achieves a significant improvement in reading comprehension, with the mean score increasing from 66.91 in the pre-test to 87.91 in the post-test. In contrast, the control class points out a smaller improvement, with mean scores rising from 61.70 to 73.35. Statistical analysis confirmed that the Global Method has a significant positive effect on students’ reading comprehension (the p-value 0.001 lower than 0,05). Therefore, the Global Method is more effective than conventional teaching methods in enhancing students’ ability to understand narrative texts. It is recommended that English teachers incorporate this method into their instructional reading practices to support students’ comprehension development.

Abstract

This article examines the significance of violence, particularly structural violence—as a critical topic of literary research. Violence is a persistent and evolving element of human life, making it essential to explore its forms and implications. As societies have developed through the establishment of governments, regulations, and institutions, structural violence has become increasingly prevalent. This form of violence manifests as indirect harm embedded within social, economic, and political systems, often disadvantaging specific individuals or groups through financial hardship, unequal access to education, healthcare disparities, and discrimination. Notably, structural violence often goes unnoticed and lacks a clearly identifiable perpetrator. The purpose of this study is to analyze the portrayal of violence, with a focus on structural violence, in Stephen King’s novel Carrie. Employing a qualitative method, this research draws upon textual evidence from the novel to support its analysis. The findings reveal that Carrie reflects various instances of structural violence through its narrative, particularly those that inflict invisible wounds on the victim. However, this study is limited to institutionally embedded forms of violence, leaving broader dimensions of the topic open for future exploration.

Abstract

In academic writing, cohesion plays a crucial role in creating clarity and flow. However, students often struggle to use cohesive devices effectively, which can impact the coherence of their writing. This study explores the use of grammatical cohesive devices in pros and cons essays written by students in the Marine Science study program to assess their effectiveness in conveying the writer’s intention. It aims to examine how these devices; references, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction are employed to convey the writers’ intended meaning. Moreover, this study also identifies the most frequently used types of grammatical cohesive devices. Using qualitative content analysis approach, the researchers analyzed 80 essays to identify the frequency and effectiveness of each cohesive device. The findings reveal that reference (62.50%) was the most frequently used device, followed by conjunction (34.38%), while substitution and ellipsis were rarely employed (1.56% each). These results indicate that students primarily rely on pronouns, pointer words, and conjunctions to link ideas and maintain the flow of their arguments. This study highlights the need for more structured instruction and additional support to help students improve their use of cohesive devices. The results also contribute to the development of cohesion theory, particularly in the context of student writing, and suggest future research directions. Further exploration of underutilized devices like substitution and ellipsis, as well as the use of cohesive devices in other text types, could enhance understanding of student writing and inform teaching strategies to promote stronger cohesion and clarity in student essays.

Abstract

The Kampus Mengajar Program is part of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) policy which provides opportunities for prospective teacher students to be directly involved in improving the quality of education in elementary schools. This study aims to explore how pre-service teachers describe their experiences in overcoming challenges in improving students' literacy while participating in the Kampus Mengajar 7 program. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study design, involving five students who have participated in the program. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews and documentation. The results showed that students faced various challenges at school, such as low student interest in reading, limited learning media, and a shortage of English teachers. To address these challenges, students designed a needs-based literacy program that is fun and relevant, such as routine reading before lessons, reading corners, and the use of digital media such as Canva, Wordwall, and YouTube. Individual and group strategies were also implemented to make students more active and enthusiastic. Besides having an impact on improving students' literacy, involvement in this program also contributes to the development of students' pedagogical, social and technological competencies as prospective teachers. However, the sustainability of the program still depends on school support and teacher involvement. These findings show that the Kampus Mengajar not only has a positive impact on students, but also serves as a real learning platform for students in preparing themselves as professional educators in the future.

Abstract

Mastering the simple present tense is crucial for writing factual texts like reports, yet many Indonesian EFL students struggle with it. This study identifies the types and causes of present tense errors in report texts written by seventeen eleventh-grade students at MAN 22 Jakarta. Using a qualitative descriptive method and Dulay, Burt, and Krashen’s Surface Strategy Taxonomy, the errors were classified as omission, addition, misformation, or misordering. A total of 187 errors were found, with misformation being the most common. The main causes were interlingual transfer, limited grammar knowledge, and direct translation from Bahasa Indonesia. Interviews confirmed that minimal practice and exposure also contribute to these errors. The findings underline the need for contextualized grammar instruction and engaging writing activities to help EFL students write more accurately and confidently.

Abstract

This study aims to examine and analyze the role of the mosque as a center for Islamic religious education in developing the religious character of youth in Barangka Village, Buton Regency. In rural communities, the mosque functions not only as a place of worship but also as a non-formal educational institution with significant potential in shaping the morals and personality of the younger generation. In the face of globalization and the rapid development of information technology, which influence youth lifestyles and mindsets, character education based on Islamic values becomes increasingly crucial and relevant. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, using data collection methods such as observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of religious activities conducted at the mosque. The informants include religious leaders, youth, mosque youth organization members, and the surrounding community. The findings reveal that the mosque in Barangka Village organizes a variety of structured religious education activities, including regular study sessions, Qur’an reading lessons, religious discussions, and community-based Islamic events aimed at reinforcing religious values among the youth. Youth involvement in these activities significantly contributes to the development of their religious character, as evidenced by increased devotion to worship, polite behavior, social responsibility, and active participation in community life. Despite several challenges, such as limited facilities, a shortage of qualified religious educators, and negative influences from digital media, the mosque remains a vital moral foundation for the youth—supported by religious figures, families, and the broader community. This study concludes that the mosque plays a strategic role in educating and nurturing religiously grounded youth, and with institutional strengthening and cross-sector collaboration, this role can be further optimized to meet the demands of modern character education.
