Abstract

Language is a system of sound and character signs used to communicate within and between communities. Interjection is one of the language parts that are commonly used as a daily expression. Translation has a significant role in order to reach the receptor for understanding the source language. The study of this research focuses on the analysis of translation techniques for Interjections in the novel Matahari into English. The purpose of this study is to describe the translation techniques applied in translating interjections and to know what translation technique is mostly employed in translating interjections from Indonesian-English in the novel Matahari. The researcher conducts a qualitative descriptive method. This study is also conducted by using analyzing the translation technique, comparing and classifying the data, getting the data percentage, and drawing the conclusion. The researcher collectes the data from the novel and there were 45 data. The result of the data analysis shows that there are 13 data (28,9 %) using borrowing, 12 data (26,7%) using literal translation, 5 data (11,1%) using adaptation, 5 data (11,1%) using linguistic amplification, 5 data (11,1%) using established equivalent, 3 data (6,7%) using substitution, and 2 data (4,4%) using amplification. The researcher found the most common technique used is Borrowing.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out the types of English interrogative sentences and to explore the subtitling strategies used in translating English interrogative sentences into Indonesian subtitles in the Animal Kingdom movie. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The data source of this research was a movie entitled Animal Kingdom meanwhile, the data of this research were the English interrogative sentences and the Indonesian subtitle of the English interrogative sentences. The results showed that there are five out of six types of English interrogative sentences identified in Animal Kingdom movie. There are 37 data of yes-no question, 73 data of WH-question, 120 data of declarative question, 1 data of tag question, and 4 data of rhetorical question. There are seven out of ten subtitling strategies found in Animal Kingdom movie, there were 9 data of expansion, 74 data of paraphrase, 78 data of transfer, 10 data imitation, 47 data of condensation, 10 data of decimation, and 7 data of resignation. It can be concluded that the most dominant subtitling strategy for translating English interrogative sentences into Indonesian subtitles in Animal Kingdom movie is transfer with the amount of 78 out of 235 data.

Abstract

While much research has documented university students attitude towards learning English oral communication skill in the classroom, their attitude to the learning of English oral communication skill outdoors has been under researched. To fill this gap, the present study aims to investigate university students attitudes to the learning of oral communication skill outdoors. Eight university students of English Department (4 males and 4 females) aged between 20-22 years old voluntarily participated in the study. Data of the study were gathered from informal interviews and students reflective writings carried out over the completion of tasks. The data were analyzed using attitudinal analysis system. The findings from affect aspect showcased students negative emotion to speak English outdoors. However, the result from judgement dimension showed that students were able to adapt to outdoor context; built their confidence; improve speaking skill, and engage in communication. The findings from appreciation aspects also showed positive trends that learning to speak English outdoors was engaging, authentic, and helpful to build students confidence. These empirical evidences suggest that learning to speak English outdoors promotes university students oral communication skill development in authentic and engaging ways.

Abstract

The problem in this study relates to the study of translation, specifically on translation techniques which govern the way directive speech act is translated from English into Indonesian. This study aims to find out translation techniques of directive speech acts using Yule's theory (1996) and Molina and Albir's theory. The data sources of this study are WALL-E film and its Indonesian subtitles on a streaming platform Disney+ Hotstar. Based on the results, there are 81 data of directive speech, divided into Command with 20 data, Order with 41 data, Request with 11 data, and Suggestion with 9 data. The researcher also found 14 translation techniques which are used when translating English directive speech act into Indonesian from the sources of data, namely: amplification, borrowing, calque, compensation, discursive creation, established equivalent, generalization, linguistic amplification, linguistic compression, literal translation, modulation, particularization, reduction, and transposition. There were 37 data using single technique, 31 data using couplet technique, 11 data using triplet technique, and 2 data using quartet technique.

Abstract

This study analyzes how english songs give impact to preschoolers in learning English. Investigates the effectiveness of using English songs to teach English as a foreign language (EFL) to preschool students based on the theory. The research shows that music enhances grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary while creating a fun and engaging environment. These dynamic experiences attract and retain attention, increasing motivation and fostering positive associations with language learning. Early childhood (2-6 years old) is a very important period in language acquisition. English songs, with their catchy melodies and rhythmic structures, can be a fun and engaging way for preschoolers to learn English. This research uses qualitative methods, specifically descriptive analysis. The data in the form of English songs will describe what influence they have on preschoolers' English language skills.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify and analyze the value of patriotism displayed in the film Lone Survivor. The theory used in analyzing the value of patriotism is Rashid's theory and divides the value of patriotism into 7 values, namely loyalty, courage, self-sacrifice, love, never giving up, caring and optimism. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. As for research techniques using librarian techniques that focus on books and journals as supporting theory in this study. The results of the analysis show that there is a loyalty value of 1 data with a percentage of 3.3%, a value of courage totaling 5 data with a percentage of 16.7%, the value of willingness to sacrifice is 2 data with a percentage of 6.6%, the value of love is 3 data with a percentage of 10%, the value of caring is 6 data with a percentage of 20%, the value of never giving up is 7 data with a percentage of 23.4% and the optimistic value is 6 data with a percentage of 20%. Thus it can be concluded that the most dominant value is the value of never giving up.

Abstract

This research discussed about subtitling of figurative language in Batwoman drama series. The aims of this research to find kinds of figurative languages used in Batwoman and to identify subtitling techniques used in figurative languages in Batwoman. The researcher use Perrines theory to find figurative language and Gottliebs theory find subtitling strategies. The researcher focused on each characters dialogue, those are Batwoman (Kate Kane), Alice, Luke Fox, The method that the researcher used is qualitative method. The result of this research is the researcher found 83 data in the series. For the figurative, the frequency of the data is 15 similes, 8 metaphors, 2 apostrophes, 24 metonymies, 8 synecdoches, 2 symbols, 18 overstatements, and 6 ironies. For the subtitling strategies, the researcher found 3 expansions, 2 paraphrases, 52 transfers, 24 imitations, 1 transcription, and 1 condensation.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze visual content that elevates Indonesian culture from the book "My Next Words For Elementary School Grade 1" published by Lala Intan Gemala et al. from the Ministry of Education and Culture. This research is using descriptive qualitative method and Roland Barthes' semiotic theory: The science of interpreting a signal, where language is also a structure of signals with a particular message from society. According to this study, the visual content of the book contains several categories of cultural diversity values. In the first image, the girl is portrayed as emphasizing the importance of helping parents, which is categorized as "Respecting Other People's Traditions" (ROPT). In the second image, two female students are depicted wearing different-shaped uniforms, demonstrating "Appreciating Womens Equal Rights" (AWER). In "Appreciating Other People's Cultural Products" (AOPCP), this is demonstrated in one of the traditional Indonesian costumes that the teacher was wearing, depicted in the third image. The result proved that the three photos do not reflect Indonesia's entire cultural prosperity.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the characteristics of popular culture used in the content of F&B products on TikTok based on John Storey's theory and also the influence of popular culture on F&B products. The TikTok video contents were the F&B products: Mixue, McDonalds, and Starbucks. The videos were from 2022 until 2023. Documentation techniques were used in collecting the data and information supporting the analysis. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The result of the analysis showed that the F&B products were following the six characteristics of popular culture, there are 3 data found that Popular culture is widely liked by many people, 3 data found that Popular culture is to say that it is a culture that remains after we have decided what high culture is, 4 data found that Popular culture is referred to as 'mass culture', 3 data found that Popular culture is a culture that comes from the 'people', 6 data found that Popular culture as a place of struggle between the 'resistance' of subordinate groups and the 'aggregation' forces that operate in the interests of the dominant group, and 6 data found that Popular culture is a culture of postmodernism. Popular culture also influences peoples eating habits through F&B products. People become consumptive and they buy things not for necessity, but only for their satisfaction.

Abstract

Since writing in English appears to be an issue for EFL learners, particularly in academic settings for undergraduate students, there is a need to identify some ways or methods of teaching that may assist students in improving their writing ability, such as implementing different platforms like Social Networking Sites (SNS) for teaching and learning English writing skills in the hopes that it will help students enhance their proficiency. This research aims to ascertain how SNS are used to improve writing skills in English by examining Indonesian undergraduates' perspectives and their preferences for English writing practice on their SNSs. This study employed a qualitative approach as the research design. The participants of this study were 42 undergraduate students majoring in English education at a private university in Jakarta, Indonesia. The research instruments employed a questionnaire and an interview. The results revealed that the utilization of SNS as a tool for English writing learning is perceived as helpful and beneficial for the development of undergraduate students' English writing skills.
