Abstract

Prehypertension is a condition that can increase the risk of developing hypertension and lead to various diseases such as cerebrovascular disease, coronary artery disease, and chronic kidney disease. Lifestyle factors significantly influence blood pressure, with obesity being one of the key risk factors for prehypertension. Obesity can be assessed using anthropometric measurements such as Waist-Hip Ratio (WHR) and A Body Shape Index (ABSI). This study aimed to investigate the relationship between WHR and ABSI with prehypertension among male students at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. The study employed an analytic observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The respondents consisted of active male medical students from the class of 2019–2021, with data collected using random proportional-to-size sampling. Among the 74 respondents, 28.4% had normotensive blood pressure, while 71.6% exhibited elevated blood pressure. Regarding WHR, 28.4% of respondents had values indicating a risk of hypertension, and for ABSI, 25.7% of respondents had values indicating similar risks. Bivariate analysis revealed a significant relationship between WHR and ABSI with prehypertension (p = 0.024, p = 0.045). In conclusion, this study found a significant association between WHR and ABSI with prehypertension among male medical students at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia.

Abstract

Air pollution and shifts in consumption habits toward more immediate choices have negatively impacted health by increasing the levels of free radicals in the body. Antioxidants, which can neutralize free radicals, are found in various plants, including dates (Phoenix dactylifera L.). Dates are known to exhibit antioxidant properties. In this study, date fruits were extracted using distilled water as a solvent through the maceration method, followed by evaporation. The resulting extract was subjected to qualitative secondary metabolite testing, alongside analyses for total phenolic and flavonoid content, as well as antioxidant activity using the DPPH method with UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The data were analyzed by calculating the inhibition concentration 50 (IC50) value, and results were fitted into a regression equation. Phytochemical tests confirmed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins in the date extract. The antioxidant activity test yielded an IC50 value of 98.02 µg/ml, classifying the extract as having very strong antioxidant activity. The total phenolic content was 1.16 mg GAE/g extract, and the total flavonoid content was 0.12 mg QE/g extract, indicating that the date extract contains significant levels of phenolic and flavonoid compounds.

Abstract

Vulvovaginitis is inflammation of the vulva and vagina caused by Candida spp, bacteria, and Trichomonas vaginalis. Clinical symptoms of vulvovaginitis include itching, burning, and vaginal discharge. Many women buy over-the-counter drugs and treat themselves without knowing the cause of their vulvovaginitis, so the treatment they get is not optimal, therefore, an examination is needed to determine the organism causing the vulvovaginitis. This case report was made to know the cause of vulvovaginitis in a patient. A 25-year-old woman came with complaints of odorless yellowish-white vaginal discharge, complaints accompanied by itching, and dysuria. The patient is pregnant with a gestational age of 28-29 weeks. On physical examination, the vulva appears reddish, vaginal discharge is yellowish-white. On direct microscopic examination, yeast cells and pseudohyphae were found. Culture on SDA+ agar produced colonies of Candida sp.

Abstract

Nutrition-aware families (Kadarzi) are a government effort to reduce morbidity or mortality. One of the efforts of Kadarzi behavior is to routinely weigh children under five years (toddler) to determine their nutritional status, which is one indicator of Kadarzi behavior. This study aims to see the relationship Kadarzi behavior and the nutritional status of toddlers in Kampung Pelita Medika (KPM) FK UNRI. This study uses an analytical approach with a cross-sectional design conducted from June to November 2021. The results of this study showed that was a relationship between Kadarzi behavior and the nutritional status of toddlers based on the Weight/Age, Length (Height)/Age, and Weight/Height indices, where each p value =1.000; p = 0.001; and p = 0.000 with Prevalence Ratio (PR) value = 1.02 (0.98-1.06); PR = 10.68 (2.16-52.93); and PR=7.68 (2.39-21.53) which means that dietary behavior is a risk factor related to the nutritional status of toddlers.

Abstract

Blunt trauma without visible skin damage is a common type of violence encountered in physical assault cases. Statistically, at RS Bhayangkara Pekanbaru, 341 cases of blunt trauma without skin damage were reported out of a total of 6,255 assault cases from 2015 to 2020. These cases present a challenge for doctors in finding physical evidence of trauma to document in medicolegal reports (Visum et Repertum). This study aims to analyze the histopathological differences, including erythrocyte extravasation, neutrophil and monocyte cell infiltration, and tissue edema, between groups subjected to blunt trauma without skin damage and a control group. Using a post-test-only group design, this study involved 30 Rattus norvegicus samples divided into three groups: control, intervention group 1, and intervention group 2. The intervention involved a 324-gram load dropped from a height of 45 cm onto the surface of the rats' skin. Histopathological examination revealed no significant differences in erythrocyte extravasation, neutrophil infiltration, or monocyte infiltration, while a significant difference was observed in tissue edema levels.

Abstract

Surgery is an invasive treatment that consists of major and minor surgery. Post-major surgery patients require comprehensive intensive care, including checking hemoglobin levels to detect anemia. Post-operative anemia can occur in 80-90% of patients undergoing major surgery. The purpose of this study was to describe anemia in post-operative pediatric patients treated in PICU Arifin Achmad Hospital for the 2018-2020 period. The design of this study is descriptive cross sectional with retrospective approach using medical record of pediatrics with 169 samples. The results showed that the majority of preoperative pediatrics patients were not anemic (73,4%) and were not given blood transfusions (76,3%). Postoperative pediatric patients dominantly anemic (53,8%). The majority of postoperative anemia incidence occurred in the age group 6-59 months (54,9%), male gender (57,1%), and location of abdominal surgery (71,4%). The type of anemia based on erythrocyte index in postoperative was microcytic hypochromic (61,5%). These findings highlight the importance of monitoring anemia in pediatric patients post-surgery to improve clinical outcomes and reduce complications.

Abstract

Stretococcus pneumoniae (S.pneumoniae) is a commonly colonized in healthy people that potentially to be transmitted directly to other individuals through droplets and as an invasive pathogen. The prevalence/ frequency of S. pneumoniae carriage in children is around 20-60%, while data of carriage’s frequency in adult population is still limited. Akit tribe is a tribe who lives in a group in the coastal rural area of Rupat Island. The high incidence of upper respiratory tract infection among Akit tribe and the location can be risk for S. pneumoniae carriage. Study aimed is to identify the frequency of carriage in the adult population of the Akit tribe. Nasopharyngeal swab was collected from healthy adults, then cultivated on agar media. Colonies suspected as S. pneumoniae then selected, then subjected to optochin test. S. pneumoniae confirmation were using automatic machine VITEK. We reported S. pneumoniae carriage rate was 7.8% (12 of 153 participants) among Akit tribe.

Abstract

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine system disorders affecting women of reproductive age. One of the biomarkers for the diagnosis of PCOS is Anti Mullerian Hormone (AMH). Meanwhile, women with PCOS are at higher risk for vitamin D deficiency. The research aims to examine vitamin D and AMH for PCOS women with obesity. PCOS or also known as hyperandrogenic anovulation (HA), or Stein-Leventhal syndrome, is one of the most common endocrine system disorders affecting women of reproductive age. This study was analytic with a cross-sectional approach. The subjects were women with PCOS who went to Dr. M. Hoesin Sriwijaya University (n=30). Inclusion criteria were patients diagnosed with PCOS using Rotterdam, patients who had not received therapy for insulin resistance, and were obese. The exclusion criteria were that the patient couldn’t fulfill Rotterdam criteria and/or option not to participate in this study. The results were that most patients experienced oligomenorrhea (76.7%), the age mean was 31.17 years, and the BMI mean was 33.4 kg/m2. The Spearman correlation test showed a negative correlation between AMH and Vitamin D (p=0.011, correlation coefficient=-0.458). There was no correlation between BMI and vitamin D in PCOS patients, but there was a negative correlation between AMH and vitamin D levels.
